2007 BEREAN BULLETINS

December 2007

The Meaning Of Christmas

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. John 1:14

Each year it seems that Christ's birth is acknowledged less and less during the Christmas season. An editorial in a British newspaper stated, "Christ has been detached from Christmas, and the season is now apparently just a time for being kind and ensuring that no one is lonely."

We have a magnificent opportunity to spread the good news that Jesus is the reason for the season. Here are two perspectives on the true meaning of Christmas that we can share with others:

* Jesus came for our sake. He was born to die on a cross for our sins, and He was resurrected to give us forgiveness and eternal life (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

* We can urge people to respond to Jesus with faith, accepting His offer of salvation (John 1:12; 3:16).

This time of year is more than just a season to be kind. Christmas is about Jesus—the real reason for the season. So let's take the opportunity to tell others the miraculous story of Jesus, God's Son. And let's pray that many, like the wise men who came to worship the promised Savior (Matthew 2:1-2), will seek Him and find Him this year. —Joanie Yoder

When we look beyond the manger

To the cross of Calvary,

We will know the reason Christmas

Brings such joy to you and me.

Bethlehem's stable was the first step in God's journey of love to the cross.

Christmas Thoughts

"Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart."

George Matthew Adams (The Christmas Heart)

November 2007

The Reason And The Risk

I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ. 2 Timothy 2:10

It was the kind of moment that people have nightmares about. A tanker truck filled with 2,500 gallons of propane gas caught fire while parked at a fuel storage warehouse. The flames shot 30 to 40 feet out of the back of the truck and quickly spread to a loading dock. Several large tanks nearby were in danger of exploding. At that point, the plant manager, after helping to rescue the badly burned driver, jumped into the cab and drove the blazing truck away from the warehouse. His quick action and courage saved lives.

The apostle Paul also risked his life on behalf of others (2 Timothy 2:10). He was stoned and left for dead (Acts 14:19). On another occasion he was mobbed, whipped, and imprisoned (16:22-23). Three times he was shipwrecked, and he was beaten many times with lashes and rods (2 Corinthians 11:23-28). Why did Paul willingly endure such suffering? He was thinking in terms of eternal fire and eternal life, so he gladly undertook the risk.

Do we see the danger as clearly as Paul did? Do we take advantage of opportunities to go to the rescue of people who need the good news of Christ? Are we filled with the same sense of purpose that caused Paul to endure all things for the sake of the lost? -

Mart De Haan

Thinking It Over
What risks do we take if we dare to tell others about Jesus? Physical harm? Verbal abuse? Rejection? Ridicule? Loss of possessions? Other?

It's risky to go out on a limb-but that's where the fruit is..

An atheist complained to a Christian friend, "Christians have their special holidays, such as Christmas and Easter; and Jews celebrate their holidays, such as Passover and Yom Kippur; Muslims have their holidays. EVERY religion has its holidays. But we atheists," he said, "have no recognized holidays. It's an unfair discrimination." "What do you mean, atheists have no holidays," his friend replied, "People have been observing a special day in your honor for years." "I don't know what you're talking about," the atheist said, "When is this special day honoring atheists?" "April first."

2007 BEREAN BULLETINS

OCTOBER 2007

It Takes Teamwork!

READ: 1 Corinthians 12:12-25

The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you."

--1 Corinthians 12:21

During a rehearsal at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, the renowned conductor Arturo Toscanini offered some constructive criticism to the featured soloist. She was too proud to accept his help, however, and expressed her resentment by exclaiming in anger, "I am the star of this performance!" Toscanini responded wisely and firmly, "Madame, in this performance there are no stars."

The maestro had made a strong point. The soloists, the members of the chorus, and the orchestra all had to work together in harmony or there could be no beautiful music.

This is also true of the church. In Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, he likened the parts of our physical body to individuals in the church, the body of Christ. All of us as believers have our own unique traits and individual duties, but taken together we comprise one body. We must therefore recognize how much we need one another. Paul wrote, "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you'; nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you'" (12:21).

The Lord isn't looking for soloists who want to be stars; He's looking for workers who are willing to be servants. God's work takes teamwork!  —RWD —Richard De Haan

Thinking It Over
What are your motives for serving in the church?
How do you respond when your work goes unnoticed?
How does your attitude need to change?

Teamwork divides the effort and multiplies the effect.

    SEPTEMBER 2007

    Completeness

"And I will give you rest."

    Matthew 11:28

Whenever anything begins to disintegrate your life with Jesus Christ, turn to Him at once and ask Him to establish rest. Never allow anything to remain which is making the dis-peace. Take every element of disintegration as something to wrestle against, and not to suffer. Say - Lord, prove Thy consciousness in me, and self-consciousness will go and He will be all in all. Beware of allowing self-consciousness to continue because by slow degrees it will awaken self-pity, and self-pity is Satanic. Well, I am not understood; this is a thing they ought to apologize for; that is a point I really must have cleared up. Leave others alone and ask the Lord to give you Christ-consciousness, and He will poise you until the completeness is absolute.

The complete life is the life of a child. When I am consciously conscious, there is something wrong. It is the sick man who knows what health is. The child of God is not conscious of the will of God because he is the will of God. When there has been the slightest deviation from the will of God, we begin to ask - What is Thy will? A child of God never prays to be conscious that God answers prayer, he is so restfully certain that God always does answer prayer.

If we try to overcome self-consciousness by any common-sense method, we will develop it tremendously. Jesus says, "Come unto Me and I will give you rest," i.e., Christ-consciousness will take the place of self-consciousness. Wherever Jesus comes He establishes rest, the rest of the perfection of activity that is never conscious of itself.

    The Army of the Lord

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door, as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside.

The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"

My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor."
Pastor questioned, "How come I don't "see you except at Christmas and Easter?"

He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."

    AUGUST 2007

    Powerful Actions-Prayer

"Pray without ceasing-be unceasing and persevering in prayer"

    -1 Thessalonians 5:17-

Today’s verse from 1 Thessalonians 5 is verse 17 "pray without ceasing- be unceasing and persevering in prayer". Now does this mean that you need to be on your knees praying 24 hours a day? Certainly not. It means, that as a Christian, you have access to God 24 hours a day, at any moment, at any minute. You have such a close righteous relationship with God that regardless of where you are or what you are doing, you are in fellowship and contact with your Lord. As one great saint put it-"I never pray for more than 15 minutes, but there is never 15 minutes when I am not praying".

If you want to have the abundant life that Jesus Christ came offer you, then it is essential for you to prayerfully expel the negative emotions out of your mind- fear, suspicion, distrust, hate, jealousy, bitterness, insecurity and self-pity. Jesus Christ has the power to release you from these destructive emotions and replace them with love, courage, faith, hope, good humour, cheer, optimism, enthusiasm and self-confidence.

The invitation to constant needful prayer is found in Hebrews 4:16 (Amp) "let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace - the throne of God’s unmerited favour [to us sinners]; that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need- appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it".

What a wonderful privilege we have to be able "to pray without ceasing" because we have direct and bold access to our Heavenly Father.

    Actions Steps:

Today I will cover every area and action of my life with specific prayer.

    Where prayer focuses,

    POWER falls!

    You Touched My Heart

Lord, words can't express how grateful I am,

I accept your gift, though I can't comprehend,

How my life could ever be worth the cost,

A sinner whose life should be hopelessly lost.

Lord you've always caught me before I fell.

My very soul Lord, you saved from Hell.

As always Father, you knew what to do,

And just in time, you're there for my rescue.

You touched my eyes, so I may see your face.

Help me focus on you, and no other place.

You touched my ears, that I may hear,

Your still small voice calling me near.

You touched my mind so I'll understand,

That the 'Day of the Lord' is close at hand.

You touched the precious things in my life,

My love for you, my family and wife.

I will never cease to tell your story,

'Til I'm face to face with you in Glory.

My devotion to you is due in part,

Because of the way you touched my heart.

  11. JULY 2007

    MINISTER SAYS . . .

We are grateful for being able to celebrate the diversity in this country as one people, that is Bangsa Malaysia. The harmonious coexistence that we have enjoyed for 50 years is a sweet success and should be maintained as such. Even though the majorities are Malays, the other ethnic groups like Chinese, Indians, and indigenous people of the peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak are able to live in accord with one and another. I believe that the Christians, in particular, have played the role as catalysts in the process. This is possible because we firmly believe in the gospel, of which the essence is peace. It is the peace that overcomes cultural, tribal and racial barriers.

We, who have known the Lord, do not merely talk about the peace; our role is to live out the implications of that peace among the Christian communities to those who have not known the gospel. Let us pray that our light will shine through our good witness, and eventually become blessing to the people and to the nation.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

    PRAYER FOR THE LEADER

PRAY THAT GOD WILL GRANT THE LEADER AN OPENED HEART, ONE THAT GLADLY TURNS OVER HIS WEAKNESS AND NEEDS FOR SHARING WITH OTHER FELLOW LABOURERS. PRAY THAT GOD HELP THE CO-LABOURERS TO TIMELY SUPPORT THE SHEPHERD, AND HIGHLY REGARD THE ONE WHO TOILS IN THE WORK OF A SHEPHERD. GRANT HIM THE HELP OF AARON WHO WILL ALWAYS UPHOLD IN PRAYER, WITH ENCOURAGEMENT AND LOVING SUPPORT. AMEN.

    JUNE 2007

    A FATHER’S BLESSING

A man who was grieving the death of his father said, "I am crying not only for my father, but for me. His death means that I’ll never hear the words I always wanted to hear from him: that he was proud of me, proud of the family I’ve raised and the life I’ve lived.

Instead of repeating his father’s mistake, the man later gave his own son the words of encouragement he himself had never heard, saying he was proud of him and the life he had made.

Too often, tension between fathers and children are left unresolved. Old wounds remain unhealed. We are unwilling to forgive the angry words and hurts from the past. But for the sake of our families and ourselves, we need to do what we can to dismantle the walls of separation between us.

How can we begin? The Bible’s command for all our relationship is: "Love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous, not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing…….Turn away from evil and do good;……seek peace and pursue it" (1 Peter 3:8-9,11)

Let’s determine by God’s grace to break the cycle of anger and give our children what they long to hear from us- words of blessing and love.

The best thing you spend on your children is your time,

    MOTHER’S LAWS

As I read proverb 6:20, which refers to "the law of your mother," I recall some of my mother’s unique "laws" that have helped me many times.

The first one I call "the law of the warm kitchen." When we got home from school on a cold winter’s day or when the holidays rolled around, the kitchen was always so warm from baking and cooking that the windows were steamed. It was also warm with a mother’s love.

A second law I call "the law of a mother’s perspective." When I would come to her all upset over some childish matter, she would often say, "Pay no attention." Or, "Ten years from now you’ll have forgotten all about it." That helped me put things in perspective.

But above all was my mother’s "law of faith." She had an unswerving trust in God that kept her strong and gentle amid the fears, pressures, and trying times that we faced as a family.

Mom has been with the Lord now for many years. Yet I’m still grateful for her "laws," because they have helped me through many difficult days.

Christian mother, you too are writing "laws" for your children. Are they worth remembering? ~ DCE.

I love you, Mother, for your quiet grace,

For that dear smile upon your kindly face,

For marks of toil upon each loving hand

That worked for me where I could understand.

    ~ Simpson

    A Fatal Omission

    Read: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

When a group of churches advertised their Easter celebration, no reference was made to the cross. The omission was deliberate. One church official explained,

"The cross carries too much cultural baggage.″ The cross has always been offensive to some. The apostle Paul explicitly mentioned that "the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing" (1 Cor. 1:18). To be saved eternally by the unjust execution of a Jew centuries ago- what an offence to human pride, goodness and self-sufficiency! Without that cross, however, the empty tomb would be meaningless. That is why Paul gratefully exclaimed, "God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Gal. 6: 14).

Every year the Easter season brings great blessing to believers. As we remember our Lord’s death on the cross, our hearts are filled with love and gratitude. But we don’t linger on the Palestinian hillside where death seems to have triumphed. We hasten on to resurrection morning with its jubilant hallelujahs of victory. All the events of Holy Week are woven into an awesome tapestry of grace. The bloodstained tree and the empty tomb belong together. To leave the cross out of Easter is a fatal omission.

In the cross of Christ I glory,

    Towering O’er the wrecks of time;

All the light of sacred story

    Gathers round its head sublime.

THE EMPTY CROSS AND THE EMPTY TOMB PROVIDE A FULL SALVATION.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace:

    Where there is injury, pardon;

    MARCH 2007

    READ: Mark 12:41-44

This poor widow has put in more than all those

It was front-page news in the local paper. The article told of two wealthy businessmen who had given $149 million to charitable causes over a period of 8 years. That's a sum worthy of headlines.

But let's keep this in perspective. These men and their foundations are doing much good for the community and for the cause of Christ around the world. And we are grateful that God blesses some people with wealth to benefit others. But giving of this magnitude doesn't necessarily involve much personal sacrifice. If someone is a billionaire, the giving of millions represents only a fraction of what he is worth.

The Bible records another account of big giving that would be worthy of today's front page. Jesus evaluated a poor widow as she dropped two mites into the temple treasury. It was a gift of astronomical proportions. Jesus said, "This poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury" (Mk. 12:43). The wealthy gave "out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had" (v.44). The amount a person gives isn't as important as the sacrifice behind the gift. If Jesus evaluated my giving by the principle of sacrifice, would I make the headlines? Would you?

The Lord is pleased when giving is
    Not measured by amounts;
    Our attitude and sacrifice
Are what He really counts. --

Sacrifice is the true measure of our giving.

    FEBRUARY 2007

    Our Tomorrows

Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. Luke 12:22

While we wouldn't want to argue with Jesus, we may sometimes wonder if His words about worry are realistic (Luke 12:22). After all, shouldn't we be concerned about tomorrow? Suppose we get laid off from work? Get sick? Isn't fear that we won't have bread and threads and shelter one of the strongest fears we have? No words in any language can produce more anxiety than the question, "What if?" As we mutter them, we begin to imagine one bad possibility, then another, and then both bad possibilities together. We don't think about the fact that our needs have always been met in the past and that we have enough for today. There is always that uneasy dread that tomorrow our well may run dry. While it is certainly wise to plan for the future, the imagined thirst of tomorrow, even though our well is full today, is one thirst that is unquenchable. Jesus taught that worrying about the future is futile. We shouldn't be traumatized by what might happen or by what might be required of us. The imaginary need of tomorrow is one need that God cannot meet. If God has given us food and drink enough for today, why not let Him worries about our tomorrows? Each day we learn from yesterday Of God's great love and care; And every burden we must face He’ll surely help us bear. Worry is interest paid on trouble before it comes due.

    JANUARY 2007

God is Doing a New thing

    (Is. 43:18-19)]

These days we need to pray for a depth of understanding of the purposes of God. The church must be realigned with God’s present purpose and break out of the things that have made us irrelevant in these days and time. We are in transition, we are in a process of change whether we want it or not.

We must forget the former things. Apostle Paul encourages us to forget the past and press on to the high calling in God.

God promises to do a new thing. " New," means exactly that. He is always doing new things; we are new creatures in Christ. Morning by morning His mercy is new. Everyday the Israelites were asked to collect new and fresh manna from heaven.

God is faithful to His words and He watches over His promises to fulfill them. He has promised and He will do it.

We must embrace this new promise from God and expect God to do new things. Faith moves the Hand of God and as we expect, we believe God will do many new things among us.

Move forward in 2007 with a spirit of faith and expecting God to do great things in your life
