2006 BEREAN BULLETINS

DECEMBER 2006

"I’m A Present!"

A few days before Christmas, the 3 year-old daughter of Pastor Jeff Callender was caught up in the excitement of gifts and giving. He wrote, "One morning she was picking up, examining, shaking and guessing what was inside every package. Then, in a burst of inspiration, she picked up a big red bow that fallen off from one present and held it on the top of her head. She looked up at me as she said, ‘Look at me, Daddy! I’m a present!"

Every child of God should say that to the heavenly Father. In view of all He has done for us, we are to offer ourselves to Him freely, including our bodies. Doing that, we will "put to death the deeds of the body" (Roman 8:13). And we will present ourselves to the Lord as a living sacrifice (Roman 12:1). Those who truly surrender their all to the Lord can say with Paul, "Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death" (Phil. 1:20). Christmas is the time when we commemorate God’s greatest gift to mankind-His Son Jesus Christ. As we contemplate the love that prompted such giving, may our response be one of yielding our lives to Him for His glory. Let’s echo the words of that little girl, "Look at me, Father! I’m a Present!"

What shall I give to Christ today,

To Him who gave Himself for me?

I’ll give to Him my life, my love

For time and for eternity.

To make something of your life, give your life to God.

    NOVEMBER 2006

    You are not accident

    "Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love." Your birth was no mistake or mishap. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He was not at all surprised by your birth. In fact, he expected it. He expected you – and he designed you with a purpose in mind. God's motive for creating you was his love. The Bible says, "Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love."

    Dr. Michael Denton, senior research fellow in human molecular genetics at the University of Otago in New Zealand, has concluded, "All the evidence available in the biological sciences supports the core proposition … that the cosmos is a specially designed whole with life and mankind as its fundamental goal and purpose, a whole in which all facets of reality have their meaning and explanation in this central fact." The Bible said the same thing thousands of years earlier: "God formed the earth … He did not create it to be empty but formed it to be inhabited." (Isa. 45:18)

    Why did God bother to go to all the trouble of creating a universe for us? Because he is a God of love. This kind of love is difficult to fathom, but it's fundamentally reliable. You were created as a special object of God's love! God made you so he could love you. This is a truth to build your life on.

    Point to ponder: The universe was not complete, in God's eyes, until he had filled it with people to love. He planned from the beginning of time to make you!

    Verse: "When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers - the moon and the stars you have set in place - what are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us?" (Psalm 8:3-4) What will you do about it: Take a look at the night sky and remind yourself that you are more important to God than all the stars combined. Let that motivate you to worship him.

    Prayer: Thank God for planning your life and for loving you so much.

  8. OCTOBER 2006

    TWINKLE TINKLE, TATTLE

    1Peter 5:6-11

    Be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. – 1 Peter 5:8

    A man was repeatedly robbed by burglars who entered his house through a window while he was asleep. He finally solved his problem by three things. He called them a twinkler, a tinkler and a tattler. The twinkler was a candle that he kept burning at the window all night. The tinkler was a bell attached to the window. And the tattler was a small noisy dog. Because of these, the burglars were kept away.

    Every Christian lives in a house that Satan seeks to steal. We too need a twinkler, a tinkler and a tattler. The twinkler is the candle of God‘s Word. Its truth provides light that exposes Satan’s lies. Daily attention to the Word keeps the lamp bright. The tinkler is the bell of our testimony. Keep it ringing as you tell others of the Saviour, and Satan will be frustrated. The tattler is the life of prayer. When the enemy comes, send up the warning that you are telling Jesus about it all. Yes, twinkle your light, a tinkle your testimony, and bark the enemy away by prayer.

    A godly woman, when asked the secret of her victory, replied , "whenever the devil raps at the door, I just say, ‘Jesus, You go to the door and take care of him.’

    The only way to overcome temptations that we face is to be focused on the Lord, who strengthens by His grace.

    IF YOU WOULD MASTER TEMPTATION LET CHRIST MASTER YOU

    MY EXAM PRAYER

    (School student)

    Lord grant me a quiet heart

    Before examinations start.

    Teach me to use my leisure hours

    To re-invigorate powers

    My mind from daydreams liberate;

    From all distractions set me free

    That in my studies I may be

    A student with this sole intent;

    To make my work sacrament

    From my faint heart, in love, expel

    All failure fears that therein dwell.

    And from my pillow drive away

    All dark foreboding of the day;

    Help me in faith to rest so deep

    That I may have untroubled sleep.

    While notes and lessons I prepare,

    May I not lose my zest for prayer.

    And I may not forget the look

    For the daily guidance in the book.

    In quietness, confidence and peace

    May I sure and swift release

    And may I ever grateful be

    To all who offer prayer to me;

    While for myself I intercede,

    For other student I would plead.

    So many examinations find

    Each other alert in heart and mind;

    First inward joy and peace possessing,

    Exams will prove a source of blessing

  12. SEPTEMBER 2006

    Jesus Developed Passion For Goals

    "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men. "

    Colossians 3:23

    Passion is power:

    You will never have significant success with anything until it becomes an obsession with you. An obsession is when something consumes your thoughts and time.

    You will only be remembered in life for your obsession. Henry Ford, the automobile. Thomas Edison, inventions. Billy Graham, evangelism. Oral Roberts, healing. The Wright brothers, the airplane.

    Jesus had a passion for His mission and goal in life. "For the Son of man is come to seek and save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him" (Act 10:38).

    Jesus focused on doing the exact instructions of His heavenly Father. He healed the sick. He noticed the lonely. He came to make people successful, to restore and repair their life to full fellowship with His Father.

    Jesus’ obsession took Him to the cross. It took Him to the crucifixion. Eight inches of thorns were crashed into His brow. A spear punctured His side Spikes were driven into His hands. Thirty-nine stripes of a whips tore states that four hundred soldiers spit on His body. His beard was ripped off His face. But he was obsessed with the salvation of mankind.

    And He succeeded

    AUGUST 2006

    POWERFUL ACTIONS

    "Pray without ceasing – be unceasing and persevering in prayer"

    1 Thessalonians 5 : 17

    1 Thessalonians 5 is verse 17. " Pray without ceasing – be unceasing and persevering in prayer". Now does this mean that you need to be on your knees praying 24 a day? Certainly not. It means, that as a Christian, you have access to God 24 hours a day, at any moment, at any minute. You have such a close righteous relationship with God, that regardless of where you are or what you are doing, you in fellowship and contact with your Lord. As one great saint put it- " I never pray for more that 15 minutes, but there is never 15 minutes when I am not praying."

    If you want to have the abundant life that Jesus Christ came to offer you, then it essential for you to prayerfully expel the negative emotions out of your mind – fear, suspicious, distrust, hate, jealousy, bitterness, insecurity and self-pity. Jesus Christ has power to release you from these destructive emotions and replace them with love, courage, faith, hope good humour, cheer, optimism, enthusiasm and self-confidence.

    The invitation to constant needful prayer is found in Hebrews 4:16 (Amp) "Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace- the throne of God’s unmerited favour [to us sinners]; that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need – appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it".

    What wonderful privilege we have to be able "to pray without ceasing" because we have direct and bold access to our Heavenly Father.

    ACTION STEPS:

    Today I will cover area action of my life with specific prayer.

    JULY 2006

    HEAVENLY DELIGHT

    "Delight yourself in the Lord and I will cause you to ride high and get your full share of the blessings I promised"

    Isaiah 58:14

    God desires to bless our lives. However, we must walk in the conditions and principles of Scripture to allow God to minister to us. As we continue our theme of ‘delighting’ let us read Isaiah 58:14 "Delight yourself in the Lord and I will cause you to ride high and get your full share of the blessings I promised". God want you to ride high, to receive and inherit all the promises that are Christ Jesus. Riding high causes you to enter into the wonderful promises that God has for you.

    Isaiah describes same of these promises in Isaiah 58:11 "And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too. And you will be like a well watered garden and like an ever flowing stream".

    As you ‘delight’ in the Lord e will cause you to ‘ride high’ on these promises of (1) continual guidance (2) satisfaction with the really things in life (3) a vital and health body (4) a productive and fruitful life and (5) a refreshing vitality in your life.

    Our consumer societies, along with the Insurance Industry, are constantly feeding us the benefits of their products or services. However, nobody, but God can give you these wonderful benefits. Our responsibility and requirement is to "delight ourselves in the Lord".

    Make sure you ‘ride high’ God’s way today.

    ACTION STEPS:

    Today I will delight myself in the lord by:

    If you get HIGH WITHIN you won’t have to get HIGH WITHOUT.

    JUNE 2006

    CHOICE CHANGES

    Verse : "Let the weak say, I am strong" – Joel 3:10

    I used to ask myself the question – "Is it right to say, ‘I’m feeling great, terrific, on top of the world’ when you are actually feeling weak, depressed ad down the tubes?"

    I thought that wasn’t very honest, but then I came across Joel 3:10 "Let the weak SAY I am strong". I noticed that the person was weak, but was challenged to declare he was strong. In other words, he was to make a ‘faith’ declaration. Now, what is that? "Faith is the confident assurance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). We know that "as a person thinks in his heart, so they become" (Proverbs 23:7). So learn to declare and say what you want, rather than what you don’t want. Yes, let the weak, say I am strong!

    Paul brings out this same ‘choice’ principle with the strong declaration of Romans 8:37. "No in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us". Now, what is he saying ‘No’ to? Trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger and death. So in the midst of this very difficult and distressing list of problems, Paul declares "I am more than a conqueror". We must always realize and focus on where our victory comes from. Yes, it is in Christ, and that is why we can declare it so strongly, because "Greater is He (Christ) that is in you, than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).

    Write out some of these positive promises from God’s Word, onto blank cards, and declare them through the day. You are handling God’s energized Word, so watch out for powerful results!

    ACTION STEPS:

    Today I will declare the promises of God, regardless of how I am feeling.

    Everyone has the choice to move ahead, or remain stagnant.

    June 2006 Highlights

    Father’s Day Message

    24th June Rev. Teo Kwee Keng

    Fathers are Wonderful People!

    Fathers are wonderful people
    Too little understood,
    And we do not sing their praises
    As often as we should.

    And Father struggles daily
    To live up to "his image,"
    As protector and provider
    And "hero of the scrimmage."

    And perhaps that is the reason
    We sometimes get the notion,
    That Fathers are not subject
    To the thing we call emotion.

    But Fathers are just "wonderful"
    In a million different ways,
    And they merit loving compliments
    And accolade of praise.

    For the only reason Dad aspires
    To fortune and success
    Is to make the family proud of him,
    And to bring them happiness.

    And like our Heavenly Father,
    He's a guardian and a guide,
    Someone that we can count on
    To be always on our side.

    Caretakers, Not Owners

    Read: Psalm 95

    All things come from You, and of Your own we have given You. . --1 Chronicles 29:14

    John Hauberg and his wife live in a stunning home in Seattle. It is built mostly of glass inside and out. Hundreds of glass artifacts decorate the light-flooded rooms, and even the sinks, shelves, and mantelpieces are made of glass.

    You might think that the Haubergs would be in constant fear that something would break. On the contrary, they invite visitors to roam freely throughout their entire home. John is also a connoisseur of Native American crafts, but he has donated his entire collection to the Seattle Art Museum. His motive is not to hoard but to share. "I'm not an owner," he says. "I am a caretaker."

    John Hauberg's comment expresses in a simple sentence a basic biblical principle that applies to all our possessions: We aren't owners; we are caretakers. Legally, of course, we own our possessions. But as Christians, we gladly acknowledge with David that "the earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein" (Ps. 24:1).

    By right of creation, God holds the title deed to all that exists, including us and whatever we possess. Temporarily He allows us to use the resources of His world. But in the end it all reverts to Him. Are we being wise and generous caretakers of God's property? --VCG

    Naught that I have my own I call,
    I hold it for the Giver;
    My heart, my strength, my life, my all
    Are His, and His forever. --Small

    What is a MOTHER?

    A Mother has so many things to do,
    From washing, ironing, cleaning to tying a shoe.
    She scrubs, she mends, she cooks and sews,
    She bathes the children and washes their clothes.
    When they forget to wash their faces clean,
    And their clothes are the muddiest you've ever seen,
    Who repairs the clothes and scrubs them like new?
    Of course, that is what a Mother will do.

    Who becomes the doctor or the nurse when they are ill,
    Applying a bandage or giving them a pill?
    Who becomes a teacher when a child has homework?
    She must never her duty shirk.
    Who becomes a detective to find a toy or a book?
    For missing things she must look and look?
    Who becomes a listener to every heartache,
    To every accomplishment that a child makes?
    Who scolds their children when they are naughty,
    Or remind them of God when they are to haughty?
    Who tends her family with love and patience, too?
    Of course that is what a Mother will do.

    APRIL 2006

    Empty Proof

    In the days after the French Revolution, a man tried to start a new religion that he believed was superior to Christianity. But he was disappointed at his lack of success. He revealed his frustration to a clergyman and asked what he could do.

    The clergyman replied that it was no easy task to begin a new religion--so difficult that he had nothing to suggest. But after a moment's reflection, he said, "There's one plan that you might want to consider. Why don't you get yourself crucified and rise again the third day?"

    The firm foundation of the Christian faith is an empty tomb. The New Testament declares that the death of Jesus paid the penalty for our sin. But how can anyone know for sure that Christ's crucifixion was acceptable to God? It doesn't matter much what we think of the death of Jesus; what matters is what God thinks about it.

    God's approval of Christ's sacrifice is proven by the resurrection. It stands as God's signed receipt that He is completely satisfied. Without the resurrection, Christianity has nothing much to offer the world. But the fact that Christ died and then rose from the grave "is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes" (Rom. 1:16). --HWR

    When Jesus Christ was crucified,

    He paid sin's penalty;

    His rising from the grave revealed

    His death's sufficiency. –Sper

    The resurrection is the Father's "Amen!" to the Son's "It is finished."

    MARCH 2006

    Have a Wonderful Day

    Read: Proverbs 11:24-31

    Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. —2 Corinthians 9:7

    After admiring a painting in a woman's home, I was surprised by her generosity when she took it down and gave it to me.

    I've seen many similar acts of kindness. For years, my mother-in-law hung on to her archaic-looking refrigerator so she could give more money to the Lord's work.

    A Christian family I know had saved money to buy a new car. But when they heard of a desperate need on a mission field, they kept their old car and gave to missions instead.

    I've also heard of a Christian businessman in Ohio who puts something in his pocket every morning to give away—a pen, a trinket, even a ten-dollar bill. As the day unfolds, he looks for someone who would be blessed by receiving a gift. "By constantly looking for an opportunity to give," he says, "I have a wonderful day."

    The old saying "Takers eat well, but givers sleep well" is only partially true. According to Proverbs 11:25, givers also eat well: "The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself."

    We must not give grudgingly or merely out of a sense of duty but from the heart. It's the generous, cheerful giver whom God loves (2 Corinthians 9:7). —Joanie Yoder

    Give as you would to the Master
    If you met His searching look;
    Give as you would of your substance
    If His hand the offering took. —Anon.

    Many people readily give God credit, but few cheerfully give Him cash.

FEBRUARY 2006

Servants Of All

Read: Matthew 20:20-28

Whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave. —Matthew 20:27

Robert K. Greenleaf, founder of the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership in Indianapolis, said, "The great leader is seen as a servant first, and that simple fact is the key to his greatness."

Two thousand years ago, Jesus taught that truth to His disciples and lived it out. As the Son of God, He had been given "all authority . . . in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28:18). Yet He did not force people to follow and obey Him. His leadership model was radically different from what we see in today's world. It was one of humility and unselfish service to others.

Christlike leadership means considering the needs of our neighbors before our own, seeking their good, encouraging their spiritual growth and intimacy with God. It means treating others the way God has treated us. Servant leaders employ gentle persuasion and reason rather than barking orders and ultimatums. They don't dictate or demand but recognize that before God they themselves are but servants who are only doing their duty (Luke 17:10).

Whatever our position of leadership, we will never lose if we lose ourselves for others. Service that cares for others is the basis of true greatness. —David Roper

Controlling other people's lives
Is not a leader's trait;
It's serving other people's needs
That God considers great. —Sper

Only the one who has learned to serve is qualified to lead.

    JANUARY 2006

    Restoring The Years

    Read: Joel 2:12-27

    I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten. —Joel 2:25

    How many years have you lost to the locust? Have self-indulgence, sensuality, sinful motives, and personal ambition robbed you of joy, peace, and fruitfulness? Perhaps you feel discouraged when you think of all the time that seems to have been wasted, never to be reclaimed.

    If so, consider the words of the Lord through the prophet Joel. God told the people of Israel that even though they had been disobedient to Him and had been disciplined through a plague of locusts, there was still hope. The Lord said that He is "gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness" (Joel 2:13). Then He promised, "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten" (v.25).

    When we confess our sin to the Lord, He is quick to forgive our past and fill our future with hope. He can bring good out of our wasted years. He does that by teaching us humility through our failures, and by helping us to understand the weaknesses we have in common with others.

    Although our previous years may have been blighted by sin, God is eager to restore us and give us much fruit from our labor. What we have learned from the past can now result in productive service for Him and heartfelt praise to Him. The year ahead is filled with hope! —David Roper

    Forgive me, O Lord, for all of my sin,
    Please make my heart pure and cleanse me within;
    To You I confess, my ways have been wrong;
    Restore now my joy and fill me with song. —Fitzhugh

    No matter how dark your past, with Christ your future is bright.
