DECEMBER 2004
Something Happened Here
Read:
Luke 2:8-20
There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. --Luke 2:11
Christians are divided in their thinking about Christmas. Some want to give up on it and hand it over to the department stores. Others want to salvage it and use it to say something important about the birth of Jesus to a weary secular world. I, for one, would like to take my place with the second group. Years ago an old pioneer journeyed westward across the great plains until he came to an abrupt halt at the edge of the Grand Canyon. He gawked at the sight before him--a vast chasm 1 mile deep, 18 miles across, and stretching out of sight. He gasped, "Something must have happened here!" At the Christmas season, anyone who stops to look and listen must ask some questions about what the hustle and noise is all about. A thoughtful man or woman, seeing the lights, the decorations, the festivities, and the religious services might also conclude, "Something must have happened here!" Of course, something did happen. We need to tell the world about it. God has visited our planet. His Son Jesus Christ came to reveal God and to die for our sin (Jn. 1:1-14). It's the best news ever. God became one with us that we might live forever with Him. Merry Christmas! --
HWRBeyond all else this day should be
A day of holiest memory,
When all the world should joyfully
See Christ the Lord in Christmas. --Anon.
God came to live with us that we might live with Him.
A warm welcome to all our visitors and friends! If you require assistance, counseling or prayers, please approach or contact Pastor. See overleaf for contact details.
The Christmas Ten Commandments
I. Thou shalt not leave "Christ" out of Christmas, making it "Xmas." To some, "X" is unknown.
II. Thou shalt prepare thy soul for Christmas. Spend not so much on gifts that thy soul is forgotten.
III. Thou shalt not let Santa Claus replace Christ, thus robbing the day of its spiritual reality.
IV. Thou shalt not burden the shop girl, the mailman, and the merchant with complaints and demands.
V. Thou shalt give thyself with thy gift. This will increase its value a hundred fold, and he who receiveth it shall treasure it forever.
VI. Thou shalt not value gifts received by their cost. Even the least expensive may signify love, and that is more priceless than silver and gold.
VII. Thou shalt not neglect the needy. Share thy blessings with many who will go hungry and cold unless thou are generous.
VIII. Thou shalt not neglect thy church. Its services highlight the true meaning of the season.
IX. Thou shalt be as a little child. Not until thou has become in spirit as a little one art thou ready to enter into the kingdom of Heaven.
X. Thou shalt give thy heart to Christ. Let Him be at the top of thy Christmas list

Our Mission Statement
NOVEMBER 2004
The Object Of Our Trust
Read: Ephesians 1:1-14
In Him we have redemption . . . , the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. --Ephesians 1:7
A woman confessed to me that she had lied about me. She then asked for my forgiveness. I told her she was forgiven. She took me at my word, and our relationship has been good ever since. But what if she had badgered me with questions like, "Did I show enough grief for what I did?" and "Could I buy you something to show you I was sincere?" I would have felt insulted. She would have been placing more value on the quality of her repentance than on my integrity.
I believe that God is grieved in a similar way when we who have trusted Jesus continue to be burdened with feelings of remorse and guilt. God's Word says that we are redeemed and forgiven "according to the riches of His grace" (Eph. 1:7). The only requirement for daily forgiveness and cleansing is confession
(1 Jn. 1:9). Why then should we keep mourning over our sins, confessing the same ones again and again? Let's focus on Him instead of on ourselves. Affirm His integrity by taking Him at His word. Remember, our forgiveness depends on His character as the infinite Forgiver, not on our efforts to earn it. It's the object of our tru
st that matters. --HVLCould my tears forever flow,
Could my zeal no respite know,
These for sin could not atone--
Thou must save, and Thou alone. --Toplady
Our faith in God may not be great, but our faith is in a great God.
A warm welcome to all our visitors and friends! If you require assistance, counseling or prayers, please approach or contact Pastor. See overleaf for contact details.

OCTOBER 2004
I'm In Debt
Read: Romans 1:8-17
I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. --Romans 1:14
A shopper underestimated the total cost of her groceries. When the cashier added up the items, the woman was $4 short. Then something unusual happened. The man behind her in the checkout lane saw her digging through her purse and motioned to the clerk to put the amount on his bill. He modestly refused to give the woman his name. A few days later, the local newspaper reported that a charity organization had received a $4 check with the following note: "This check is for the man who helped me out of a tight spot. I came up with the idea of giving it to you as a thank-you to him." This incident illustrates a vital spiritual principle. We should feel an obligation to pass along to others the kindnesses shown to us. That's how the apostle Paul responded to God's mercy. Of course, he could never repay the Lord for salvation, but that didn't stop him from openly showing his gratitude. Because of what he had received, he showed the highest kind of charity--sharing the gospel with others. Let's not think that because we can't repay God for saving us, we owe Him nothing. We are indebted to Him for everything. And the least we can do is show our appreciation by telling others about Him. --MRD II
Lord, speak to me, that I may speak
In living echoes of Thy tone;
As Thou hast sought, so let me seek
Thine erring children lost and lone. Havergal
How can we give only a little
when Christ gave His all?
A warm welcome to all our visitors and friends!

I Cannot Pray
I cannot say OUR if my religion has no room for others and their needs.
I cannot say FATHER if I do not demonstrate this relationship in my daily life
I cannot say WHO ART IN HEAVEN if all my interests and pursuits are in earthly things.
I cannot say HALLOWED BE THY NAME if I, who am called by His name, am not holy.
I cannot say THY KINGDOM COME if I am unwilling to give up my own sovereignty and accept the righteous reign of God.
I cannot say THY WILL BE DONE if I am unwilling or resentful of having it in my life.
I cannot say ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN unless I am truly ready to give myself to his service here and now.
I cannot say GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD without expending honest effort for it or by ignoring the genuine needs of my fellowmen.
I cannot say FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US if I continue to harbor a grudge against anyone.
I cannot say LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION if I deliberately choose to remain in a situation where I am likely to be tempted.
I cannot say DELIVER US FROM EVIL if I am not prepared to fight in the spiritual realm with the weapon of prayer.
I cannot say THINE IS THE KINGDOM if I do not give the King the disciplined obedience of a loyal subject.
I cannot say THINE IS THE POWER if I fear what my neighbors and friends may say or do.
I cannot say THINE IS THE GLORY if I am seeking my own glory first.
I cannot say FOREVER if I am too anxious about each day's affairs.
I cannot say AMEN unless I honestly say, "Cost what it may, this is my prayer."

Our Mission Statement
SEPTEMBER 2004
Broken Toes, Broken World
Read:
1 Corinthians 12:12-27You are the body of Christ, and members individually. . --1 Corinthians 12:27
Twice in my life I've broken one of my little toes by colliding with furniture. Ouch! For days I limped painfully, my body protecting its tiny injured member. My body was doing exactly what it was designed to do. It supported and sympathized with the part of me that was hurting. Gradually my toe healed, resuming its thankless task. Although I'll never again take my toes for granted, I sometimes take for granted certain members of the church. Paul taught that the church is the body of Christ
(1 Cor. 12:12-27), not merely like the body of Christ. Each member has God-given abilities to support and sympathize with other members.
If Christ's church is to function the way God designed it, there are three things we dare not do: (1) Refuse to fellowship with others.
(2) Let fear and lack of love cause us to withhold our gifts from others.
(3) Disregard or oppose the gifts of others through pride and envy.
Instead, we need to be actively using our spiritual gifts to the benefit of fellow members of Christ's body. Only when we experience both the giving and receiving of Christ's healing love for broken members will we be ready to reach out to a broken world. --
We're all dependent on the strength
We draw from one another,
For we're connected by the love
That comes from God our Father. --Sper
A healthy church is the best witness
to a hurting world.

The Power of Kindness
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. --Ephesians 4:32
A young factory worker noticed one day that a valuable tool was missing from his toolbox. Later he recognized it in the toolbox of a fellow employee. The young man was the only Christian in the shop, and he wanted to have a good testimony for Christ. So he went to the man and said, "I see you have one of my tools, but you may keep it if you need it." Then he went on with his work and put the incident out of his mind.
During the next 2 weeks, the person who had taken the tool tried to soothe his conscience. First he offered the young man something of equal value, then he offered to help him on some home projects, and finally he slipped some money into his coat pocket. Eventually, the co-workers became good friends, and the one-time tool thief admitted he couldn't resist the man's kindness.
Kindness is probably the most effective tool Christians have in their kit of virtues. But even when it doesn't bring about a reconciliation, as it did with those two workers, it is still the right response. No matter how we are treated, we are to follow Christ's example (Eph. 4:32). Oh, for grace to extend love to others, even as God for Christ's sake has loved us! --HGB
Lord, help me be kind and forgiving--
Your loving forgiveness You've shown
To me for the sins I've committed;
Lord, grant me a love like Your own. --
Need to repair a relationship? Try Kindness.

Our Mission Statement
JULY 2004
Read: Matthew 9:35-10:1
Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice. —Psalm 55:17
Bible In One Year: Isaiah 47-49; 1 Thessalonians 4
While driving through a small town in Pennsylvania, I saw these words on a church sign:
Pray for a good harvest,
but keep on hoeing.
This made me think of Jesus' words in Matthew 9. Before telling His disciples to pray that laborers would be sent out, He reminded them that a good harvest was waiting but that the laborers were few (vv.37-38). We sometimes forget that God may want us to be part of the answer to our own prayers. We expect Him to do everything, and then we sit back and do nothing. We ask Him to bless the work of our church but offer excuses when asked to serve. We plead for loved ones to be saved, yet never speak a word of testimony to them. We earnestly intercede for people with serious financial needs, but we won't dig deep into our own pockets even though we have the means to help them. We ask the Lord to comfort and encourage the shut-ins and lonely, but we never go out of our way to pay them a visit or send them a note of encouragement. Yes, God wants us to bring our requests to Him, but many times He wants us to add feet to our prayers. Working often goes hand-in-hand with praying. —Richard De Haan
Your faith in God is proven when
You serve as one who cares;
Faith finds a way to love and help—
Putting action to your prayers. —Hess
Pray as if everything depends on God; work as if everything depends on you.

Our Mission Statement
JUNE 2004
Number One Father
Read:
1 John 4:7-21
Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God. --1 John 3:1
Where do kids get the stuff they come up with? One evening as I was getting 8-year-old Steven settled in for the night, he looked at me and said, "You're my second favorite dad." Whoa, I thought. Am I missing something here? But then Steve quickly filled me in. "First, God. He's my number one Father. Then you."
I'm glad Steven is able to transfer his feelings of love for his earthly father to his heavenly Father. But some people have a tough time accepting that "other Father." All they know of a father on earth is desertion, abuse, neglect, hatred, and pain. To those who have seen nothing but bad from an earthly dad, turning their life over to another Father--even one who is God--is not easy. But it is not impossible.
If you struggle with loving the One who is our heavenly Father, remember that He is the ultimate Dad because He epitomizes love (1 Jn. 4:7), grace, mercy, and compassion. He gives good things to His children (Mt. 7:11). And He lovingly corrects us to develop our spiritual growth and maturity (Heb. 12:9-11).
Even the best of earthly fathers will sometimes let us down. But you can always trust your Father in heaven. Be sure that God is your number one Father. --JDB
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father!
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be. --Chisholm
A good father reflects the love
of the heavenly Father.

Mother's Laws
Read:
Proverbs 6:20-24Do not forsake the law of your mother.
—Proverbs 6:20
As I read Proverbs 6:20, which refers to "the law of your mother," I recall some of my mother's unique "laws" that have helped me many times.
The first one I call "the law of the warm kitchen." When we got home from school on a cold winter's day or when the holidays rolled around, the kitchen was always so warm from baking and cooking that the windows were steamed. It was also warm with a mother's love.
A second law I call "the law of a mother's perspective." When I would come to her all upset over some childish matter, she would often say, "Pay no attention." Or, "Ten years from now you'll have forgotten all about it." That helped me put things in perspective.
But above all was my mother's "law of faith." She had an unswerving trust in God that kept her strong and gentle amid the fears, pressures, and trying times that we faced as a family.
Mom has been with the Lord now for many years. Yet I'm still grateful for her "laws," because they have helped me through many difficult days.
Christian mother, you too are writing "laws" for your children. Are they worth remembering? —DCE
I love you, Mother, for your quiet grace,
For that dear smile upon your kindly face,
For marks of toil upon each loving hand
That worked for me ere I could understand. —Simpson

Attempting The Impossible
Read:
Matthew 27:62-28:8God raised up [Jesus], having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
—Acts 2:24
It was the day after Jesus was crucified. His body lay in a tomb. But the chief priests and Pharisees who had engineered His crucifixion had the uneasy feeling that this might not be the end of the Jesus story. So they went to Pilate and told him that Jesus' disciples might steal His body to try to convince the people that He had fulfilled His prediction to rise from the grave. Pilate responded, "You have a guard; go your way, make [the tomb] as secure as you know how" (Matthew 27:65).
A guard was posted and the tomb was secured with an official Roman seal (v.66). The religious and political leaders did their very best to make sure that the body of Jesus remained in the tomb, but they were attempting the impossible. Death could not hold the sinless Son of God in its grasp, and on the third day He rose just as He said He would (Matthew 20:19; 27:63; 28:1-8).
After the resurrection, the chief priests bribed the soldiers and told them to spread a ridiculous story about the disciples stealing the body (Matthew 28:11-14). Still today skeptics offer one fanciful theory after another, attempting to disprove the resurrection of Jesus. In spite of their efforts to cast doubt on the historical record, the truth is that Jesus came out of the tomb.

Sharing The Wealth
Read:
Luke 12:13-21Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you. —James 5:3
One of the most popular TV programs in the US is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? But the amount of money to be won is a mere pittance when compared with the amount suggested by the title of another contest: "I Wanna Be A Gazillionaire Geek." Since 1989, the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has offered a prize to students who team up to create the best plan for starting a business. And what's the incentive? Public welfare? Community service? Alleviating poverty? No, the goal is to make money simply to be rich.
Although Scripture doesn't condemn wealth, it certainly warns against the pursuit of money as an end in itself. Our Lord strongly denounced putting our confidence in riches as a source of pride and security (Matthew 6:24; Luke 12:15). Therefore, our prayer should be: "Give me neither poverty nor riches" (Proverbs 30:8).
And what if the Lord blesses us with resources beyond what we need? The apostle Paul urged believers to work with their hands "what is good, that [they] may have something to give him who has need" (Ephesians 4:28). That's the principle of stewardship—sharing our wealth to help others. —VCG
We give Thee but Thine own,
Whate'er the gift may be:
All that we have is Thine alone,
A trust, O Lord, from Thee. —How
Wealth is a double blessing when you share it with others.

The Great Potter
Read:
Jeremiah 18:1-6As the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand.
—Jeremiah 18:6
One definition of the word attitude is "the angle of approach" that an aircraft takes when landing. Author Chris Spicer writes: "Attitudes are to life as the angle of approach is to flying." He adds, "Attitude is the way we choose to think about things; attitudes will cause us to react and behave in a certain way." He also says that attitudes are not inborn or accidental. They are learned and absorbed reactions; therefore they can be changed.
During my thirties, the Lord began convicting me of my wrong thinking toward myself, others, and life—negative, self-pitying, and bitter thinking. With the help of God's Word, I recognized my need for change in three main areas: my attitudes, actions, and reactions. But I feared I couldn't change. One day I read in Jeremiah 18 how the potter refashioned some marred clay (which is what I felt like) into a different vessel, as it pleased the potter. What I couldn't do, my great Potter could! I only needed to be cooperative clay.
Today this vessel is far from finished. But as I put myself in the Potter's hands, He keeps working on me and shaping my attitudes and actions. I call them Christ-attitudes, Christ-actions, and Christ-reactions.
The great Potter can do the same for you. —Joanie Yoder
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay;
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still. —Pollard

Our Mission Statement
JANUARY 2004
For His Purpose
The Year 2004 is going to be a year of exciting opportunities and a year fill with many challenges. The reason Berean AOG exists in Batu Pahat is "FOR HIS PURPOSE" – "Build HIS church, to influence the community".
I would like to remind you of this scripture verse Romans 9:17, "For HIS purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth."
To discover the purpose of GOD, we must look again at God’s faithfulness. In the beginning, we have no building but we were a people who realized our purpose in GOD and desirous of HIS power being displayed through each of us. Now we thank GOD for He has provided us a building of our own for HIS glory and purpose.
I am convinced that if we, especially our younger generation, are to be integrated into what GOD has promised, we must again be gripped by a burning passion to do all things FOR HIS PURPOSE.
LET US PROCLAIM
… among the nations; both in our community as well as world mission. For inherent in our covenant with GOD is the understanding that HIS loving-kindness is manifested by HIS redemptive concern for the human race. He has also promise HIS faithful presence to those who maintain fellowship with HIM as their GOD. He says in Genesis 17:8, "I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. Let us proclaim this promise of HIS message.
LET US PRAY
… for those who do not know this promise as well as for our personal revival. He says, "I have raised you up for this very purpose that I may show My power in you. So it is my desire for Bereanites just as GOD encourages me. I urge and pray that every member of this church to be known for this right attitude of prayer. This is the big secret in allowing GOD’s power to be display in is.
LET US CHANGE
… in our personal lives, which is necessary before WE can make our impact in our community and in the world. The ultimate goal of GOD’s covenant with humankind is to bring salvation to every household, the kind of change that can impact the world. A changed world can only become a reality through a changed people.
GOD demonstrated this when He sent HIS son, Jesus Christ. He became flesh to show us we can change. By HIS grace, knowing how you were changed, you are now "chosen" to live as "a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to GOD, that you may declare the promise of Him who called you out of darkness into HIS wonderful light. We will then see many souls be added to the church and the kingdom of GOD be established in Batu Pahat. Praise GOD!
