CHRISTMAS GIFT
Gerald Horton Bath (and Norman Vincent Peale) tells a story about a young African boy who listened carefully as a missionary teacher was trying to explain to him why Christians give presents to each other on Christmas day. " The gift is an expression of our joy over the birth of Jesus and of our friendship with each other," she said.
So when Christmas day came, the boy brought the teacher a seashell of lustrous beauty. "Where did you ever find such a beautiful shell?" she exclaimed as she fingered it and looked at it from every side. The youth told her that there was only one spot where such extraordinary shells could be found. When he named the place, she realized that it was a certain bay that was quite a few miles away from where they were, and she was stunned. "Why, it’s gorgeous, and it’s wonderful, but you shouldn’t have gone all that way to get a gift for me."
The young boy’s eyes brightened, and he answered, "Long walk part of gift." The angels left their realms of glory to proclaim amazing news to us of the Messiah’s birth. God himself had journeyed from heaven’s throne to a manger’s straw for us. He came to demonstrate his love; "long walk part of gift."
"A gift is a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth." – Proverbs 17:8

Our Mission Statement
NOVEMBER 2002
The Place of Obedience
"Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing." Acts 9:8a
There is a place of obedience for all of us. For Paul, it was being struck blind on the Damascus road. God literally knocked him off his horse with a blinding light. A voice from Heaven asked Paul why he was persecuting Him (Jesus). When Paul arose, he could not see. Jesus told him to go to Damascus and meet a man named Ananias. There, Jesus restored Paul’s sight through Ananias.
Each of us has a place of obedience. For some, it requires only a nudge of pressure to gently lead us toward God. For others, a lightning bolt is necessary to get our undivided attention. Many who are hard-hearted rebel against the living God. Yet God’s love for these individuals is so great that He takes extreme measures to gain their attention-and their hearts. When you come in contact with people like this, do not fear their arrogance. Instead, see them as God sees them-as people who need the Saviour and who could be a powerful force in the Kingdom if God saved them. It is a sign to begin praying for them.
We’ve all heard the saying, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall." In many cases this is true. God has called many hard cases into His Kingdom through miraculous circumstances in order to save their lives from the pit of hell and transform them into a sweet-smelling fragrance. Do not let the hard exterior fool you. These are needy people who are crying out for help in their own prideful way. Whenever God begins this process in the life of a sinner, He has others standing by to assist. Ananias was the person in Paul’s life. He found it unbelievable that Paul really could have been saved. An angel had to convince him
.Has God placed such an individual in your path? Perhaps God desires to use you to be an "Ananias" in the life of one of His wayward children. To do so requires a willingness to come alongside that one who needs your help. Who knows, that person could be the next apostle Paul.

OCTOBER 2002
Grace ![]()
"Peace be with you!" - John 20:19
How would you respond to a group of fellow workers if you were their leader and you poured your life into them, teaching them all you know for three years, only to have them disband and go their way when troubles came? What would you say to them after you were reunited for the first time? Perhaps you might scold them. Perhaps you might cite each one’s offence. At least, you might shame them for their lack of faithfulness and courage.
After Jesus was crucified and raised from the dead, He appeared to the disciples. His first words to them were, "Peace be with you!" The word grace means "unmerited favour." When someone loves you unconditionally, without regard to your behaviour in return, it becomes a powerful force in your life. Such was the case for the disciples when Jesus appeared to them. They could have expected reprimand. Instead, they received unconditional love and acceptance. He was overjoyed to see them. They were equally overjoyed to see Him. Jesus understood that the disciples needed to fail Him as part of their training. It would be this failure that became their greatest motivation for service. Failure allowed them to experience incredible grace for the very first time. Grace would transform them as human beings.
Have you experienced this grace in your life? Have you extended grace to those who have hurt you? Can you let go of any wrongs that have come through friends or associates? The grace you extend may change their lives – and yours.

SEPTEMBER 2002

If heaven had a daily newspaper, what would make the front pages?
The headlines would read quite differently from our earthly tabloids. The good deeds that don’t get credit on earth would make the front page. Some headlines might read "Rod K. Mows Neighbour’s Grass," "Max M. Delivers Brownies to enemy," or Dan B. Changes Tire for Stranded Motorist." I’ve omitted the last names until they are rewarded in heaven!
We’ve got to start thinking differently about what matters to God. Did you know that the little things you do please Him? This means that anyone, including you, can make the headlines in heave. It all depends on which world you love most. God not only wants to save us from hell, but also to reward us in heaven.
So what will God reward on Judgment Day?
Here’re some things that will rate – if they’re performed out of love, kindness, and a pure heart toward God instead of for the reward:
You won’t make any headlines in earth’s newspapers if you do the things listed above. But that’s okay. Earth’s newspapers are used to wrap dead fish. But heaven’s headlines will be remembered forever.

God Won’t Ask
God won’t ask what kind of car you drive,
But will ask how many people you drove
who didn’t have transportation.
God won’t ask the square footage of your house,
But will ask how may people you welcomed into your home.
God won’t ask about the fancy clothes you had in your closet,
But will ask how may of those clothes helped the needy.
God won’t ask about your social status,
But will ask what kind of class you displayed.
God won’t ask how many material possessions you had,
But will ask if they dictated your life.
God won’t ask what your highest salary was,
But will ask if you compromised your character to obtain that salary.
God won’t ask how much overtime you worked,
But will ask if you worked overtime for your family and loved ones.
God won’t ask how many promotions you received,
But will ask how you promoted others.
God won’t ask what your job title was,
But will ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.
God won’t ask what you did to help yourself,
But will ask how many people to whom you were a true friend.
God won’t ask what you did to protect your rights,
But will ask what you did to protect the rights of others.
God won’t ask in what neighborhood you lived,
But will ask how you treated your neighbours.
God won’t ask about the colour of your skin,
But will ask about the content of your character.
God won’t ask how many times your words matched your deeds,
But will ask how many times they didn’t.

July 2002
Fare to Nowhere
W.L. Douglas, the now wealthy shoe manufacturer, was once unemployed for so long that he was down to his last dollar. Nevertheless, he put half of that dollar – 50 cents – in the collection basket of the church.
The next morning Douglas heard of a job in a neighbouring town. The railroad fare to that town was one dollar. To all appearances it would have been wiser if he had kept that 50 cents. However with the half-dollar remaining he bought a ticket and rode halfway to the desired place. He stepped down from the train and began to walk to the town.
Before he had gone one block, Douglas heard of a factory right in that town where they were hiring men. Within 30 minutes he had a job at a salary of five dollars more per week than he would have received had he gone on to the other town.
The point is that if we put God first, He’ll take care of the rest. But if we give Him little or no place in our lives, we make Him powerless to help us. Remember, you can never outgive God!
Thought to apply: God’s work, done in God’s way, will never lack God’s supply.

"He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…….. Malachi 4:6
Great Dad’s Question: How do I find the time?
Dr. Bob’s Reply: This question did not come from one particular dad. Rather, it came from hundreds of dads when asked what is the toughest obstacle they face in being a Great Dad.
It is strangely ironic that this is the toughest obstacle cited by dads since it is the very thing that kids most wanted from their dads. This is because children spell love T-I-M-E. It’s as simple as that – and as profound as that.
So time’s the issue. If you spend one hour per week in one-on-one time with your child from the time he or she is born to age 18, the total amount of time you will spend is 39 days.
If you really want to give the children more of your time, the guiding principle is "seize the moment".
So much of the joy of fathering comes in the little moments tucked into each and every day, not necessarily the big planned events or annual family vacations.
Grab little pockets of time – 5 minutes here, 1 minute there. If you really want to "seize the moment", then practice the 5 second drill (for those of you with young kids). When your child comes up to you excited and says, "dad, listen to this, or "come here", before you answer no (because you’re tired, reading the newspaper, or both), just look into their eyes for 5 seconds and then answer. It’s a drill that works wonders.
Other tips for fun activities with children are developing a good number of traditions that kids love and family reading time. Kids love these activities and they strengthen the ties that bind a family close together.

NO CHARGE
This story is dedicated to all mothers …
My little boy came into the kitchen this evening while I was fixing supper. And he handed me a piece of paper he’d been writing on. So, after wiping my hands on my apron, I read it, and this is what it said:
For mowing the grass, $5
For making my own bed this week, $1
For going to the store $0.50
For playing with baby brother while you went shopping, $0.25
For taking out the trash, $1
For getting a good report card, $5
And for raking the yard, $2
Well, I looked at him standing there expectantly, and a thousand memories flashed through my mind. So I picked up the paper, and turning it over, this is what I wrote:
For nine months I carried you, growing inside me, No charge.
For the nights I sat up with you, doctored you and prayed for you, No charge.
For the time and the tears, and the cost through the years, No charge.
For the nights filled with dread, and the worries ahead, No charge.
For advice and the knowledge, and the cost of your college, No charge.
For the toys, food and clothes and for wiping your nose, No charge.
Son, when you add it all up, the full cost of my love is No charge.
Well, when he finished reading, he had great big tears in his eyes. And he looked up at me and he said, "Mama, I sure do love you."
Then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote, "PAID IN FULL".
The best academy, a mother’s knee. - James Russell Lowell -
"Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul".

Empowered to Serve
Discipleship involves not only devotion but also service. Jesus said that the second greatest commandment is to "love your neighbour as yourself." Lordship involves your relationship to God. Service involves your relationship to others around you. A disciple must be a people person, one who is constantly involved in ministering God’s grace to others (1 Pet. 4:10).
No other illustration in Scripture depicts more graphically the importance God places upon ministry to the needs of people than the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The essence of our love to God, Jesus said, is our willingness to respond to any need that we encounter. The priest was a religious man, but he did not know the love of God. The scribe was also a religious man, but he was too involved with his own schedule to stop and give a helping hand. It was only the Good Samaritan who became the living extension of the compassion of Jesus Christ to the dying man.
Eph. 4:12 indicates that it is God’s desire to equip every believer for the work of ministry. Submission to Christ’s lordship means submission to this equipping process which prepares the disciple for service. As you seek to make Christ lord of your life, He moulds you and equips you to serve others in His name.
Rom. 12:3-8 says that God has given you a measure of faith to function in a certain area of ministry. The fulfillment of your goal as a disciple entails discovering, developing, and deploying your spiritual gift or gifts in the service of others for the glory of God. The gift of each member of Christ’s body is essential to its overall health and effectiveness. Only when each member is functioning properly can the ministry of Christ on earth be fully accomplished.

March 2002
Celebrate Forgiveness
As Easter approaches we cannot help but celebrate that Jesus’ resurrection proved that God had accepted the payment Jesus made for the sins of humanity. In and through Jesus’ dying, we receive forgiveness for our sins.
We live in a time when few know much about forgiveness because more and more people are making excuses for their wrongdoing, refusing even to admit that they sin. If they do something wrong, it’s blamed on someone else or on the situation. Christian, more than ever, need to share and demonstrate God’s word about forgiveness.
What forgiveness is:

February 2002
WHY CELL GROUPS?
Why should the Church have cell groups?
Jesus has a master plan. One of the keys to this plan is the cell group. During His three years of ministry here upon earth, Jesus ministered to multitudes of people. There was, however, another equally important aspect to His ministry that cannot be overlooked. At the outset of His ministry, he gathered together twelve ordinary men and called them to follow Him. He then proceeded to pour Himself into them. He taught them, ate with them, slept with them, worked with them and travelled with them. He prepared these twelve men for the day when He would leave this world. It would then be up to them to preach the gospel and establish the Church. The Twelve were the first cell group in the history of the Church.
Jesus Christ calls us to follow Him. He is our great example in all things. The Christian must seek to imitate His life-style, and to practice His teachings. The Church should also seek to put into practice His plan for winning the world. A key aspect of Christ’s plan is the use of small groups to make disciples.
The example of Jesus in using a small group to intensively train and equip disciples is the first reason why the Church today needs cell groups.
The early church made extensive use of the cell group to provide the instruction and fellowship necessary for true disciples to be formed. Despite strong opposition, the early church grew at a tremendous rate because it effectively made disciples through small groups.
The cell group ministry is not simply another fad. It provides an ideal place where close personal relationships between believers can form and effective discipling can occur. The need to grow through relationships is why the church today needs cell groups.

January 2002
From the Pastor’s desk…
We thank God for His great faithfulness for the past year. Let us enter into year 2002 with great challenge by the power of the Holy Spirit as it is said in His word, "Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit," says the Lord Almighty (Zech 4:6). Also we know that the day of His returning is drawing near. Therefore we got to determine to arise and build a strong and healthy church in our town. Matt. 16:17 "…the power of hell will not conquer it"(New Living Bible).
Let us reach our town with Friendship Evangelism, for the people need the Lord. Give your best to Him. Have a blessed New Year

News from the Chinese Section
Thank God for a bountiful 2001. God did a wonderful work in the Chinese Section. Another 10 people were baptized and added to the numbers in this section.
There is an urgent need for a Chinese section worker to assist Pastor Ruth who is overloaded with the Chinese work.
Any takers? Contact Pastor Ruth during office hours.

Another year is dawning, Dear Father let it be,
In working or in waiting, another year with thee.
Another year of progress, another year of praise,
Another year of proving thy presence all the days.
Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace,
Another year of gladness, the glory of thy face.
Another year of leaning upon thy loving breast,
Another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest.
Another year of service, of witness for thy love,
Another year of training for holier work above.
Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be,
On earth, or else in heaven, another year for thee.
