Course Description: In Spanish 1, students will be presented the fundamentals of the Spanish language through a linguistic, communicative and cultural approach. Emphasis in placed on the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing. There will be a focus on grammar as well as vocabulary, which will be taught through variety of teaching techniques.

 

Materials: Juntos Uno book and workbook will be used in class every day and will be issued to each student. Students are welcome to use the Spanish/ English dictionaries available in the classroom but should have access to one at home at well. In addition, the following supplies are required: 11/2 ring binder with pockets if possible, subject dividers (vocabulary, grammar, practice, homework), notebook papers, pencils and pens.

Please note that other specialty items may be needed throughout the course.

 

Classroom Policies and Procedures:

 

1.     Conduct and Behavior: Students are expected to come to class each day with a positive  attitude to learn Spanish. I have a few simple rules to keep in mind:

 

·        Be on time and come to class prepared: Tardiness will affect your grade.

·        Respect yourself, teacher, and your classmates: You must raise your hand before speaking and there is absolutely no interrupting the teacher or your classmates while they are speaking. Speak Spanish as often as possible.

·        Choose appropriate words and actions that contribute to a positive learning environment.

·        Work hard: Be attentive for the entire class period and focus on Spanish.

·        Follow the policies and procedures as outlined in the Students – Parent Handbook: It is your responsibility to know the rules and accept all consequences for infractions of the rules.

·         Consequences for rule infractions include warning, teacher- student conference, parent contact, teacher assigned detention and referral (Behavior Alert).

 

2.     Students Evaluation: Learning a language requires active and repetitious practice. Students are required to turn in homework, participate in class activities, and complete all assigned work on time.

 

3.     Test or quizzes occur after completed each lesson. The students       will be notified with at least two week in advance.

 

4.     Students will be graded as follow:

Tests = 30%

Projects=20%

Quizzes= 20%

Homework and class work= 20%

Participation = 10%

                    

5.      Grading Scale:

Grade A equals 100- 90%

Grade B equals 89-80%

Grade C equals 79-70%

Grade D equals 69-60%

      Grade F equals 59 and below

 

·        Parents will be notified of grades seventy- five percents and below. When the student is absent, he or she will have reasonable time period to turn in the missed assignments. Here are the policies that most often apply.

·        Reasonable time is determined by the intensity of the assignment(s) and number of days absent.

·        Projects are due the day of return.

·        You must make an appointment to make up a test or quiz.

 

6.     Extra help: Students are encouraged to make an appointment with me for extra help.  The times have available are:

Wednesday 3:00- 3:30
