Ismail Said holds degree in landscape architecture and has taught the discipline since 1985 in five universities including Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, National University of Singapore, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, International Islamic University Malaysia, and King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia. The subjects of his interest are landscape urban design, landscape ecology, plant materials, and landscape construction of water features. Contents of the subject are published in teaching modules.

 

In research, he focuses on studies of children therapeutic environment and cultural landscape. In 2002, he completed a research project on impact of garden to psychological well-being of hospitalised children. This research has received warm response from the Malaysia Ministry of Health and National Landscape Architecture Department which have granted research project at a pediatric ward of Batu Pahat Hospital. 

 

In cultural landscape, he did a restoration heritage project with National Museum of Malaysia in 1999 and received an award from Badan Warisan Malaysia. Apart from landscape architectural research, he also completed4 studies on woodcarving in Malaysian vernacular architecture. Since1988, he has completed 12 research projects which were funded by MOSTE Malaysia and Research Management Centre of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The findings of the research were published in journals or  conference proceedings.

 

Through his 18 years in academic, he has published 3 books, 12 papers in journals, and 25 papers in conferences.  He also gave 11 public talks to universities, museums, and governmental agencies in local and foreign venues.

 

He also performed consultancy works in landscape urban planning in preparing master plan for local authorities including Johor Bahru and Kulai.
