INTEGRATING QUOTATIONS INTO WRITTEN RESEARCH:

IMPROVING YOUR FIRST DRAFT

 

 

Do Now:  Highlight the quotations in your rough draft. 

 

California State English Standards for grades 9 and 10: Writing 1.0, Research & Technology, 1.6: Integrate quotations and citations into a written text while maintaining the flow of ideas

 

Read the sample paper selection below.  Raise your hand when think you can tell in what ways the author did not meet the ninth and tenth grade standard above.  How would you rewrite the section?

 

In 1909 the United States Marines invaded Nicaragua.  After the elections in 1924, the marines left.  “Clearly President Coolidge underestimated the situation.”  By 1927 the Marines were once again in Nicaragua.  

 

We will use the selection below as a sample to identify these terms:

 

  • Introduce quotes, orient reader
  • Signal phrase
  • Source or authority
  • Tag verb that means “says”
  • Purpose for quote (what it proves)

 

Jimmy Carter injected a sense of urgency into the Middle East Conference with his analysis that, “It is unlikely that we shall ever see a more promising foundation for peace” (qtd. in Nessman A10).

 

You are now going to practice identifying the parts of a quotation introduction and then you will compose your own introductions.  Use the handout, “QUICK AND EASY TOOLS FOR INTEGRATING QUOTATIONS INTO YOUR PAPER”.

 

 

If this work seems too hard and you get stuck, use the hand-out entitled “A PRECISE AND CAREFUL METHOD FOR INTEGRATING QUOTATIONS INTO YOUR PAPER”.  Ask for help from your group first.  If you need more help, ask the teacher.
