... Look Back Move on ...
Christopher and Isabella

At times your caution
recalls Queen Isabella,
who treated the dreams
of a bold adventurer
as a calculated risk.
Bidding him farewell
from a high balcony,
she hocked her jewels
but kept her cool.

Or perhaps I am reminded
of the braves who hid
along the eastern shore,
sullen and suspicious,
fingering their impotent spears,
watching white men
from the cloud-kissed canoe
shove the pole of a flag
into the earth mother.

But what I would like to see
is your ecstatic face
atop the flagship's tallest mast
as the last familiar bit of coast
drops below the horizon,
and you rocking, rocking
rocking as the ship's keel
cleaves the virgin surf.
There is no greater pleasure.
