I am running for Mayor of Knoxville because I
believe that, together, we can create a better society for each and every person
in Knoxville.
I have never limited myself, and I don’t think
Knoxville should either. I will bring to the Mayor’s Office a diversity of
experience in both the public and private sectors.
- As a dean at the State University of New York
(SUNY), Manhattan, I managed complex organizations with very tight budgets.
- Having been a small business owner (from
fabric stores to international consulting), I know that local government can
help all businesses – large and small – grow and expand.
- As a parent, I understand what parents care
about, and worry about. Having lived or worked in eight countries, I cherish
the strengths of our country and our city – and can also draw on experience in
other cultures.
You work hard for your money … you pay taxes so
that government can provide the services you need. Ask yourself, “Do I know who
makes the decisions about how my money is spent – and why?” “Do I have influence
on the major decisions made by the city government?”
If the answers are “No,” I hope you will vote
for change.
My goal is to help energize the citizens of our
city so that together we will make Knoxville the best place to live in the
country – nothing less. There are three things I think are key to doing that.
First, we need a strategy to create not just
more jobs but better jobs immediately and into the future.
Second, we have to link economic growth to the
environmental health of our community … the opportunities are enormous!
Third, we need to engage everyone in Knoxville
to contribute to the decisions that affect our community. Today, too many
people feel disempowered, so they don’t get involved. Democracy is the best
system on earth – but only if people feel they can make a difference.
I want to be your mayor because I believe that
these three goals are essential to our success as a thriving, healthy society. I
can provide the leadership to achieve these goals.
It’s time for a change – and I will work with
you to MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN!
- I will create a completely different Mayor’s
office – one that is very close to the people of this city, that ensures every
citizen knows her or his views make a difference.
- I will bring in new types of businesses –
those based on creating a “green” economy that taps into booming new
opportunities.
- I will make sure our decisions always
consider both the short-term and long-term civic and environmental impacts.
I am, by nature, an optimist. I also know that
good results come from hard work, experience and knowledge. As your mayor, I
will lead that change so that, together, we create a healthy, beautiful,
prosperous, safe city for ALL of us – today, and for future generations.
