Transportation

Summaries & My thoughts

Some Vancouver main streets are clogged by 1.1 million vehicles. There are more cars in Vancouver than in L.A. Itfs not getting better because the number of cars is growing faster than the number of people. If people build more roads in order to avoid traffic jams, it will be worse because if they build them, people will come.

I think itfs true. We have to think about reducing the number of cars without building roads. However, we have to consider about traffic jams. Many people depend on their own vehicles too much, 1.1 million vehiclesc I canft believe this. Here is a survey.

1. 40% of people want public buses to reduce transit stops in order to speed up travel time.

2. 40% of people say there should be more bike lanes on roads.

3. 60% of people say we donft have to reduce the number of cars going downtown. 15% disagreed. (Resource: Vancouver Sun July 27, 1996)

What do you think these surveys? The first one is a good suggestion. It means if public transportation is convenient, they will use it. Itfs the first step to improve traffic jams. I think 2nd one is also good. Bicycle is low consumption. How about 3rd one? Most people want to go downtown by their own cars. One of reasons why we have lots of traffic jams is here. I think first of all we have to make a plan of public transportation. If buses or trains are more useful and convenient for people, they donft have to use cars so much. Do you have any ideas of this? What do you think?

I think vehicles are the worst for the environment. Automobiles create smog, water pollution, global warming, acid rain and human health problems. When I looked at this article, I remembered that we had had a smog for a week in Vancouver. It might not happen because of the exhaust emissions, but itfs true the smog will threaten us. If the air includes pollution, it will affect us. If it happens, there will be lots of traffic accidents because of poor visibility, and some heavy diseases will break out. Used oil makes groundwater dirty, then it makes acid rain. Automobiles make just vicious circle. In Japan, there are some cars which are called eeco-carf. The cars are made with thinking of ecosystem, so it destroys nature less than usual cars. Does this make sense?

If you donft understand, please ask me. Planting trees beside roads might help to create oxygen. What should we do to solve these environmental issues?
