Food Supply

Promoting Agricultural Sustainability

-by Alison Howells (From Green Teacher)

Summary

When we ask children where our food comes from, most will answer "a grocery store" but a farmer stands behind every thing. Fifty years ago, there were over 700,000 farms in Canada, but now there are fewer than 300,000. While the Canadian food system has been growing, accounting for more than 25% of the total Canadian economy, Canadians are spending a smaller percentage of income cost of food.

As consumers, we are partners in agriculture, Our choices to eat or not eat, to but or not buy affect farmers and farm families. If we think about food, we can't ignore them. Locally produced food is very good. When our food is close at hand, it is possible to question producers about methods of production and use of chemicals. Also we can know about how farmland is used and no gas is used for transportation. However, many of Canadians but cheaper imported produce from countries such as Mexico or Costa Rica. Most of the best land in Central and South America is being used to grow food for export to North a

America. To grow these export crops, many farmers are displaces by corporations. Many people who are working in Central America are using pesticides that are illegal for Canada. Canadians eat these food, so they are exposed to pesticides. In Canada, the province of New Brunswick, established the Tula Project. The project is to promote sustainable agriculture as the best means to protect the rural environment and healthy farm communities. One of the good points is to create a relationship between the consumer and farmer.

Children are the consumers for the future and will have an important role to play in helping to make farming more sustainable. A healthy local agriculture can help healthy environment and farm communities. We need to support our farmers and farming as a way of life in this country.

My thought

The answer of first question of children is very sad because they don't know where food comes from. This article is about agriculture in Canada but I think it is the same as in Japan. A few years ago, there were many farms in every country. Now those numbers are decreasing. Canadians are depending on exported food and also Japanese are. People who are making food for export often use a lot of chemicals to keep food good. These are very bad for human health. However, most of the people in Canada won't stop to eat them. My image of North American people is always think about healthy food but they are sometimes eating very bad food for health. I can't believe that. They have to think about agriculture more to get healthy food: where to buy their food and lobby the government and change laws. In Canada, people are thinking about it and is good for them. They can know about agriculture more and can have a relationship with farmers. The land of Canada is not so good to make food, but Canadians think about what good product for land of Canada. I think to make new plant breeding for Canadians.

Well, I just want to ask you this.
