Day4: 5th Dec'03 - Picnic on Gong Rock
Set out at 0845hrs. Dropped by at Seronera Wildlife Lodge to pick up our batteries. Proceeded to Moru kopjes (pronounces "copy" from the Dutch meaning "little head"). We were not disappointed. Sitting under the shade of a lime tree were two lioness and a male. They seemed to be oblivious of the people around them!!
Passed Lake Moru, nearby we saw many zebra and Gnu lazing around. Thanks to the eagle eyes of Hassan our guide, dangling on the branches of an acacia tree we spotted a leopard.
Onward to Gong Rock for a picnic lunch....which was beyond our expectations.
We felt really close to nature as we sat on the kopje, taking in the scenery and picturing what the animals see from up here. The name Gong Rock originated from the rock in the centre picture. It has a lot of inundations which when struck with a stone, give off musical notes. These were made by pre historic men!!!(2 million years ago).
Game viewed: Lion, Heron, Egrets, Egyptian Geese, Crowned Crane, Giraffe, Leopard, Zebra, Gazelle, Gnu, Hippo, Elephant, Hyena, Masked Weaver, Dik Dik, Nile Crocodile, Ostrich, Grey Billed Hornbill, Bateleur Eagle.
Returned to camp at 1700hrs. Some hot tea, biscuits and a hot shower. It was cold that night, so we sat around a camp fire and were regaled by Hassan's tales of the wild. After an excellent dinner....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!
