I wanted to display some models on the shelves and decided to use glass for the top two shelves. This is one of the major reasons why I decided to build my own. Trying to find the right shelves would be almost impossible. I found a place that would cut the 2 glass shelves for about $40. I had exact measurements for the glass but John advised me to make them a little smaller. I was afraid they would come out too short but took his advice since I was such a novice. He cut the glass shelves so precisely that I had to put them in perfectly straight. The lenghts could not have been more precise. I purchased many pieces of scrap metal and cut them down to hold the shelves in place, but the metal didnt seem to be in "harmony" with the wood. So I then decided to use wood holders. Over dinner one night I came up with the idea of using 2 pieces of wood to hold each end of the glass shelves in place. I bought a 12 foot piece of wood trim for about $6 dollars and cut down 8 pieces to size and painted them with a cherry stain. I used 2 rolls of cherry wood iron - on finish to cover all the edges of the wood. Peter suggested using it, I had no idea the stuff even existed. He also taught me what a kick panel was for :P |
