It had all started with a simple phone call.
“ Remember that game we used to play?” “ Yeah…?” Which caused the neighborhood’s teens to meet at the empty lot down the street on one, hot, fall afternoon. Which, considering how the first day of fall was two days ago, it could have been considered summer; and considering that it was exactly twelve noon, the sun was having no mercy on the group. This prompted the renowned loud mouth of the group to complain. “ Its hot!” Jet complained, scratching his wild mane of hair. Katara rolled her eyes at the fourteen year old and crossed her arms. “ No one told you to come out here and ‘play’ if you didn’t want too.” Katara stated, slightly annoyed. “ Why are we playing this stupid game anyway?” Jet picked up a random twig he found near his foot. “ We haven’t played Super Rangers since, like, a long time!” “ That’s why we’re playing it!” Katara looked at Zuko, which caused the teenager to raise an eyebrow, not sure of what his position was on the argument. But taking a closer look at the girl’s stern, I will kill you if you do not back me up, expression he conceded to the defending party. “ R-right… That’s why we’re… playing it….” A nervous laugh followed. Jet threw his hands up in the air in defeat, one still holding on to the twig. “ Whatever!” “ Good.” Katara placed her hands on her hips and looked at the three boys in front of her. “ Now, we all know how the game works, right? One guy has to be the evil monster running amuck in the city and the three of us are the Rangers. I’m already a ranger, so who wants to be the monster?” “ … Why do you get to be a ranger? Why can’t you be the mons—“ “ Jet, please…” Haru asked, placing a hand on his shoulder. Sighing in defeat, Jet gave up his tirade and crossed his arms (wincing slightly when the twig scrapped the skin). “ I think a vote would be best.” Zuko suggested. “ Or maybe we can pick straws?” “ I think that’s a great idea.” Haru added. “ Alright, we’ll do that. But I’m still ranger.” Then the group stood there in the empty field, as if they were having a ‘dumb moment’. After nearly five minutes of standing in the field, Haru said: “ And where are we going to get these straws?” “ We’re in an empty field. With dead grass!” Jet nearly yelled, waving the twig around for emphasis on their location. “ Pick it and chop it up or whatever….” After another long period of hunting for hard, dead, grass and making straws out of it with added commentary from the Jet gallery, they finally managed to get their roles straightened out and began to play the game of Super Rangers. With the movements and calling of the commands! It seemed silly, watching a group of teenagers running in a field playing a game that the five and six year olds would play, but sure was a boredom killer for the weekend before the first day of school. Jet pulled Haru by his arm away from the mock fighting duo, a piece of straw in his mouth with a mischievous expression. Haru sighed, wondering what the boy had in store this time. “ Let’s make Zuko fall on top of Katara.” Jet whispered, holding back his urge to laugh out loud at the scene playing in his inner mind theater. “ I don’t think that’d be a nice thing to do. Especially knowing what she’d do to Zuko.” Haru then closed his eyes and slightly shuddered. “ … and us….” “ Afraid of Katara? Ahaha, listen, all we have to do is just push Zuko slightly, making him lose his balance and fall on top of Katara. It’s brilliant! Besides, he’s the monster so we wouldn’t seem out of the ordinary.” The two looked over at friends chasing each other. “ Alright!” The two joined the others, resuming their Battle for the Fate of the City again the evil Fire Lord Zuko. Waiting for the exact moment to set the two up, Jet ‘pushed’ Zuko who tripped on Haru’s extended leg causing the golden eyed boy to lose his balance. The next thing that could be heard was the screaming of two teenagers colliding with each other. Haru and Jet covered their mouths, trying to fight back the urge of laughing at the scene before them, and slowly began to walk away, backwards, from the scene. Zuko landed on Katara, his hand pressed against something soft and round. But he couldn’t register that awkward hand position because his lips were on Katara’s! And Katara was staring at Zuko in shock! It also didn’t help that he was exactly positioned in-between her legs as well! Oh God, if her brother came strolling by at that exact moment, Zuko knew he would live to see another day! Blinking once… then twice, he pulled his lips away, looking down at his hand that was now cupping her breast and yelled in shock, standing up abruptly. His face was beet red and he covered his mouth, unsure of what to say or do. Katara rolled over and covered her mouth as well, staring at the dirt floor in shock. Then, Jet and Haru burst out laughing, unable to hold in their laughter. Zuko and Katara were brought out of their trance and turned their attention on the laughing duo. Getting up, Katara stepped over to Zuko’s side and glared at the laughing hyenas. “ I think missing an eye would be worth it, ne, Zuko?” Katara cracked her knuckles. “ I think that’s plenty.” Zuko growled, glaring at the two who then stopped laughing, noticing the murderous glare of the two they set up. Jet and Haru paled, knowing that they were coming after them. The two sprinted off, with Katara and Zuko hot in their tails. “ Get back here!!” Katara screamed. “ You can’t run forever!” Zuko yelled, as they chased them down the street. That Monday, on the first day of school, Jet and Haru had twin black eyes. The two were two ashamed to explain how they got them, they couldn’t even tell Sokka because they were so embarrassed. Zuko and Katara smirked at the memory. |
