Lost in the fire (Original link) Author: Lay_mercury “ Don’t hate him, Katara.” Gran Gran said softly, running an aging hand through Katara’s wavy hair. “ He’s lost more than you can count.” Katara pulled away from her grandmother’s touch, bringing her knees closer to her body, turning away from the window. “ He took away Zuko.” She buried her face in knees. “ He didn’t even get to say goodbye. I don’t even know where he’s at…. His phone number, address… anything…!” Tears began to fall down her cheeks. “ I lost him…. In the fire… He’s never coming back.” Gran Gran slowly got up, bones cracking from old age, and made her way out of Katara’s room; her expression sad for her only granddaughter. Those two were close, nearly inseparable, and now… within two weeks since that accident that took away Ursa to the heavens and scarred Zuko for life, it was like everything that made Katara happy was ripped from her by force. She remembered how she saw Katara run out into the street, to their house, worried for Zuko. How she saw him being pulled out of the burning house on a stretcher; nearly lifeless, his mother right behind… covered with a delicate white sheet, signifying that she was dead. She remembered her screams, screaming for Zuko to wake up, for him not to die. She also remembered that it was the last time she saw that boy; Ozai forbade visitation in the hospital. Now Katara lost another person in her life, Gran Gran thought as she poured herself a cup a tea in the kitchen, the entire house silent for the exception of a ball against the driveway from Sokka’s basketball playing and the muffled sobbing of Katara. Sighing she slowly sat on the stool, observing the box of Hostess Twinkies in the trash (Katara promptly threw them out, refusing to touch or look at them with Zuko now gone), wondering if her precious granddaughter would ever recover from this one. |
