He nearly threw himself onto the seat, startling Katara as she silently ate her salad at one of the picnic tables outside in the courtyard. She looked up at Jet (who wasn’t even facing her), slightly annoyed at how he, as she thought, so rudely interrupted her peaceful lunch period. She already had to move away from the Student Council that oh so conveniently stationed themselves next to her to start advertising for class rings. She already had heard enough about that mess in her homeroom class!
“ She dumped me.” Jet said, or in other words, mumbled. He chewed on the straw in his mouth. Katara raised an eyebrow, now interested in his dilemma. She continued eating, giving the teenager her full attention.
“ Azula?”
“ Yes, Azula.”
“ Why?” Jet shifted in his seat, and faced Katara.
“ She said that she found someone else who could care for her. Someone who actually understood her and her needs as a woman.” He laughed, bitterly. “ I was like, so what have I been doing these past two years? And she was like,” He raised the pitch of his voice to mock his ex-girlfriend. “ I really appreciate what you’ve done but I really don’t see us going anywhere. Please don’t take this to heart.”
“ Really now.” Katara took a sip from her Nestea. God, did it feel good to down a salad with an ice-cold ice tea.
“ And do you know who she dumped me for?” Katara plopped a cherry tomato in her mouth.
“ Who?” She briefly chewed it and then swallowed.
“ Haru.” She then began to choke on said fruit. Jet ran over to her and began patting her on the back, but she pushed him away and reached for her open bottle of Nestea, taking a big gulp to wash down the tomato that got stuck in her throat. Taking a few deep breaths, she turned to look at Jet, face flustered and eyes watery from her incident with the tomato.
“ Isn’t he,” She began, voice a little hoarse. She took another swig from her tea. “ Isn’t he gay?”
“ That’s what I thought!” He crossed his arms and leaned against the table. “ But I guess he’s not!”
“ Wow, I always assumed… considering….”
“ Now who am I going to take to junior prom in three weeks? Obviously not Azula!” He sighed pitifully. “ What did I do to deserve this….”
Katara, now lost her appetite for the chef salad she was eating, turned to face Jet with her Nestea in hand and sighed. What was she going to do for this playboy? Obviously he’s quite bitter over this turn of events, then again, he wasn’t the most faithful either. For all she knew, he pretty much deserved to get dumped for all the games he played. Besides, looking back on it, Haru did seem like the caring and attentive type.
“ Why don’t I go with you to Junior prom?” She coughed. “ As friends! Of course.”
“ Really?!” Jet instantly got out of his depressive mood and sat up, eyes sparkling. He took the straw out of his mouth. “ I thought you said you weren’t going!! You’d really go out with me?!”
“ I did not say I would go out with you.” Katara said, emphasizing ‘did not’. But in Jet’s mind, the ‘not’ did not compute in his mind. Standing up, he took Katara’s hand, kissed it, and said: “ You do not know how much I love you right now!” And then he ran off, leaving a dumbfounded Katara.
“ … That boy…”
