PSP in one hand and a Twinkie in the other, Zuko peered up the street. There was a large group of kids in Katara’s yard, and he could just barely hear Katara’s voice. He walked slowly, curious but not so curious as to throw himself into commotion. Aang and Katara were in the center, Aang holding a squirming black and white cat. “You think that’s worth petting a cat? Get out of line, Smellerbee!” Katara shouted. The smaller girl was shoving an outdated (Zuko had gotten it at least two months ago) Blue Spirit action figure at Katara. “This is so worth petting a stupid cat, Katara!” she yelled. Now very curious, Zuko walked into the yard and next to Katara, who was standing with her hands on her hips and about to yell at Smellerbee again. “What’s going on?” he asked her. Noticing Zuko for the first time, she looked at him and broke into a smile that revealed the gap from a her newly missing front tooth. “Aang just got a new kitten! His name’s Momo. Show Zuko Momo, Aang!” Aang glared at Zuko then reluctantly held out the scared-looking fluff ball. Katara wrenched Momo out of Aang’s arms and shoved him at Zuko. “Aw look, he likes you!” Katara grinned. “He didn’t pay!” Smellerbee was shrieking at Aang who looked just as annoyed with the situation as she. Zuko was holding the kitten awkwardly, who stared at him with wide, dark eyes. Then Momo hissed and jumped out of Zuko’s arms, sprinting into Katara’s crazy next-door neighbor’s yard--The Cabbage Man, as the kids called him. Katara’s crowd quickly dispersed. The little man was screaming “MY CABBAGES!” “Zuko!” Aang exclaimed before running into the Cabbage Man’s yard to rescue his beloved pet. “Oops.” Katara shrugged, pulling Zuko by the wrist into her house to count her profits and split a box of Twinkies. Zuko felt rather confused and let her pull him along.
She grabbed his arm, pulling him around to face her.
“Haru, dance with me. Now.” Her eyes narrowed at his “deer in the headlights” expression.
“Uh, I don’t…” She didn’t let him finish but just pulled him out on the floor.
Five minutes and two bruised feet later, she was back at the table watching him get her some punch. That boy dances like a rock… I should have brought Aang… at least he is light on his feet… I wish Zuko were here… he knew how to dance… A deep sigh expanded her already burgeoning chest as she tried to put the thought out of her head. He’s gone and he’s not coming back… “Hey there, beautiful. Care to dance?” A smile escaped before she could stop it and she looked up at Jet, who was standing there smirking, the ever present toothpick hanging from his lip. His hair was wild and his tux fit his lanky body like a dream. The boy was a hottie. No one could deny that.
“Won’t your date be angry?” He had come with Azula, against her father’s wishes… she was in her “rebellious stage” as she liked to put it.
He shrugged negligibly. “I doubt she’ll notice.” He said wryly, jerking his chin to the punch bowl where, low and behold, her own date was standing there laughing with Jet’s date. Huh, who’da thunk it? Haru and Azula? But both had faint blushes on their cheeks and were edging ever closer to each other.
She looked back at Jet. Why not? Sokka would be furious, but she didn’t care.
Maybe she was in her “rebellious stage” too.
