Zuko wasn’t listening. For the last ten minutes, Jin had been trying to get his attention…but he was never listening anymore, not since he met up with that Katara again. He said they were practically best friends before he got sent to live with his uncle… the way he acted, it was almost like he’d met up with some one whom he thought was dead for years.
“Zuko?” Jin knew he wasn’t listening properly, but it was worth a try, anyway.
“Huh?” He answered her. Miracle, that was.
“What’s up with you lately? You haven’t been yourself…”
Zuko turned to look at her. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Jin shrugged. “When your uncle introduced us, you were that shy, quiet guy… I liked that about you, but you’re not that guy anymore, and you seem… distant…”
“Distant? Why would I seem distant?”
Jin shrugged again. “I dunno, but you’ve been like this ever since you found out that that Katara girl is in your Spanish class…”
“Not this again,” grumbled Zuko, rolling his eyes. “She’s just my friend, Jin. My friend who I haven’t seen in years and thought I’d never see again. And in the years we hadn’t seen each other, we had no contact whatsoever with each other, so please, just relax.”
Jin shook her head at him. “Be honest with me, Zuko,” she said a little louder than intended. “If she were just your friend, you’d stop walking out on me just to see her. If she were just your friend, you’d stop pining for her. If she were just your friend, you’d stop acting like a little kid with a stupid crush.” She said the last part through gritted teeth.
“So you think that I have a ‘stupid crush’ on my best friend?” asked Zuko venomously. “You think that I’m… pining for my best friend? Goes to show exactly how much you know about me, Jin. Nice. She is just a friend, dammit, what’s so wrong with the fact that I have a friend who’s a girl, who’s not you?”
“Is that all I am to you?” demanded Jin, “A friend?”
“If you keep going on like this, you could be less than that!” snapped Zuko.
At this, Jin froze. “That’s it,” she said quietly, reaching for her bag, “I’m gone, Zuko, we’re done.”
“Fine by me,” hissed Zuko.
Jin said nothing else to him. She left without another word or glance, shoving Katara (who was on her way to see Zuko) roughly out of the way.
Zuko glared after her and was a little caught up in his anger to realise that Katara was now standing next to him.
“Zuko? Wasn’t that Jin? She seemed angry… what happened?”
Zuko looked up at her and gave her a small smile. “Nothing,” he answered quietly. “Nothing happened, Katara… we just had a small argument, that’s all… ”
