Chapter 6

Kelvin

I looked up to see my brothers face looking down on me.  It is you Max!  he said with a gleeful look.  We caught up, told each other what had happened.  Sam had been living with my dad since he left and still didnt hear about the bombing so I had to comfort him.  This didnt surprise he however; my dad probably would have never told him, thats the way he is.  Then I tried to stand up but collapsed because of my leg.  You okay Max? Sam said as he stopped crying and realized that I collapsed to the ground.

My leg is still broken I said as I got comfortable on the hard earth.  Do you think you can get me a crutch or something so we can get the hell out of here?

Why would you want to leave Max? Sam said with a shocked look on his face.  We have superpowers here!  We are stronger, faster and its so cool.  Im already really powerful.

I want to leave because I dont know how to use my powers here and I am injured.  I said angrily.  This place is were I got this injury over 2 weeks ago.  The stupid vultures picked at my leg and almost killed me!

Oh  Sam said with an upset look on his face.  Well, I can show you guys how to use your powers before I got your walking stick that way you can defend yourselves for the short moment I am gone.

Why would we need to defend ourselves?  Said Kelvin, puzzled.  After hearing what happened to Max I understand but you said this place was cool and that nothing ever bad happened, thats the only reason I came.  I didnt know you could get hurt, I didnt know bad things happened.  I want to leave, please, can we just leave.

We arent going without Max and he needs a walking stick or else he cant move.  Sam said protectively.  If you want to go alone then be my guest, but I need to get Max a walking stick and I need you to protect him until I get back so I am going to show you how to use your powers.

How do you even know what powers we have Sam?  Kelvin asked with a worried look on his face.  He was scared, like me.  He didnt know how scared to be so he was being as scared as he figured he could be, but that wasnt enough.  I knew that without a power you couldnt last in this place for 10 minutes alone, maybe 12 minutes in a group.  I knew the only way for survival was to stay together, but since that wasnt an option Sam had to get the walking stick and show Kelvin how to use his power.  This is were I was confused, because I didnt know how Sam wound know.  Better yet, how did Sam and the boy who saved me find out how to use their powers?  As I sat there thinking I closed my eyes for a moment hoping that if I fell asleep here I would make up in the real world.  Not that the real world is safer, but I knew it better and like all people I tend to fear what I dont know.  I opened my eyes and saw a spark of electricity on Kelvins hand.  I paid no attention to it, all I knew was that Kelvin had his  power and that maybe, just maybe he could protect himself and possibly me for a few seconds.  I was being pessimistic about everything that was going on.  I didnt care anymore, there was no were safe to return to.  In the real world our country is being invaded and my mom is dead.  I have no were to go to, I am merely a wandering soul asking to be put out of my misery.  I have nothing but fear for this world and I would like nothing greater than to no longer be here.

Im going now, Ill be back in a minute with a stick for you Max.  Sam said as he ran off into the distance.  In the corner of my eye I saw something slinking in the darkness.  I paid no attention, I just thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me.  And if I did say something, Kelvin would freak out and probably end up wasting all of his energy and running away, leaving me.

So Kelvin, were are you right now, in our world? I asked him trying to kill the silence that was haunting my thoughts.

I am at a refugee camp outside of Hilary.  He said with a vacant expression.  My parents were are alive and live in the camp with me and well over a thousand others but I think we will be evacuated soon.  I heard the ground troops are advancing daily and are already past our hometown.  So were are you?

I am about 35 miles away so I will be in Hilary within a week.  I responded.  I looked to see were I saw the thing slinking in the shadows but I didnt hear anything.  I just went back to the thought that I was seeing things.  I looked at Kelvin and noticed that he was skinnier than last time.  He still wasnt slim but he wasnt that fat either.  I also noticed that his eyes were a bright yellow which threw me off, I had never noticed yellow eyes.  Kelvin was about thirteen and a little taller than my brother at about five foot two inches, still a half foot shorter than me.  My brother was skinner as well now that I thought about it.  He seemed taller as well, but I knew he wasnt.  He was five foot one inch and twelve.  As I was thinking about these things I saw the thing in the corner of my eye again.  This time it was closer and on the other side.  I started to become irritated at the fact that Sam wasnt back yet and that I was seeing things.

Max, can we talk or something? Kelvin said after a moment.  I dont like the silence.  I swear I saw something in the shadows but I figured it was my imagination.  Oh well, I probably only saw it because its so quiet.  If your not going to talk I will.  Want to know how Sam could tell my power here was electricity?  It was because of my eyes.  Apparently your eye color is the only thing that changes about you when you come here, and your eye color reflects your power.  Your eyes are gray and look lifeless, in fact I cant tell whether your dead or not, could you blink or something?  Kelvin continued talking about how colorless and lifeless my eyes were but I stopped paying attention.  I saw the thing again, once again slightly closer.  I didnt want to tell Kelvin though, it would scare him and he would freak out.  Kelvin and I are cowards, like Sam was.  I remember a few years ago when we had Kelvin sleep over we were all even to scared to go downstairs in the dark.    Max, can you hear me?  He said.  Then I looked around again.  Oh good, your alive.  I was actually thinking you died on me for a minute.  I really dont want to be alone here, even if Im stuck with someone wounded I feel safer.  Not much safer but I do feel better at least, it helps me feel less alone.  So, what do you think we should do?  I started thinking while he continued to ramble on.  I started to think about what I saw.  All I knew is that it was watching us.  It could be hunting us like a predator and just showing itself to scare us into shock so that we couldnt think strait.  It could merely be spying on us but I figured that wasnt a possibility because it has no reason to spy on us.  We arent important people here, we arent strong people here, we dont even know about this world.  Then it hit me, Sam.  Sam is very powerful here, it could be after us to get to him.  This seemed like the second most real possibility in my mind, the first being that it wants to kill us.  But if it was after us to get to Sam then it probably wouldnt kill us, only torture us.  I didnt want to be tortured and I dont think Kelvin did either.  I kept looking in the direction Sam left in hope that I would see him running back, but I didnt.  All I saw was the darkness that continued past this one working street light.  Then another question popped into my head, where is the portal?  If I ever want to get out of here I need to be able to access the portal.  I didnt think Sam and Kelvin knew were it was, but one was bound to be close.  I started looking around for something that looked like the portal I walked through to return to my world.  I had to remember what it looked like, I think it was light blue and door shaped.  It gave off a faint glow that would make it visible ion the night if someone were close enough.  I started jumping my eyes every which direction in search for the portal that could get me out of one hell and into the other.  As my eyes jumped around from place to place I saw the thing again, this time maybe as close as 30 feet.  This isnt good I thought to myself, I need to spot the portal.  I felt the wind rush by me but I paid no attention to it untill I realized that until that moment there was no draft whatsoever.  I placed my eyes in front of me were I saw Kelvin staring at me.  Why would he be staring at me I wondered.  Then I looked back to were I saw the creature a moment before and it was gone.  I quickly but two and two together and realized Kelvin was not staring at me but behind me.

What is it Kelvin?  I asked slowly.
