Skills to be learned
The Ironworkers apprenticeship program trains apprentices to become qualified Journeymen Ironworkers. Their skills include fabrication and erection of structural steel, placement of reinforcing steel, certification in all processes of welding and burning, machinery, rigging, ornamental and blueprint reading.

Length of Program
The apprenticeship program is a four-year program.

Wages
An apprentice with no experience presently starts out at 60% of a journeyman's wage rate plus benefits. Wages increase 10% per year through the program.

Benefits
Ironworkers union contractors pay a group health insurance policy and a pension plan for all Union Ironworkers.

General Information
Apprentices are required to complete 216 classroom hours per year, scheduled on two nights per week from September to May as well as 6000 hours of on the job training over three years.

Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by September 1 of the year of application. Each applicant must have and present a high school diploma or GED certificate, Transcript of High School or GED grades, photocopy of birth certificate, Photocopy of military DD 214 paper, a valid drivers’ license, photocopy of Social Security card and $25.00 non-refundable fee for administrative expenses.

Physical Ability

If selected, it shall be mandatory on the part of each applicant to present a doctor’s certificate as evidence of his or her physical fitness to perform the work.

Drug Test

A certified drug test shall be required before final acceptance into the program.

Applicant must be willing to work at great heights and be physically fit to perform the strenuous work that is required of an apprentice ironworker.
