Ironton High School Class of 1968
Memorial Award
  
- In June 1988, The Reunion Committee voted in favor of establishing an annual award to be given to the best Senior female athlete at Ironton High School.  This award was inspired by our late classmate, Karen Smith Franz, and is given in memory of all departed members of the class.  Each year a plaque is given to the award recipient and her name is placed on a memorial board in the Conley Center.  The recipient also receives a $100 U. S. Savings Bond from our class.  The award winner is determined by a vote of the athletic director, the coaches of girls sports, and the senior female athletes themselves.

- This award is given at the IHS graduation ceremonies.  We need class members to present the award.  It is especially rewarding to have someone with a connection to the current graduating class such as a parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, etc.  If you are interested, please contact Phil Rice [email protected]   You will be given a prepared speech to read and instructions for the presentation.  

- The year 2009 marked the 21st presentation of the award, which is dependent upon donations from class members. The Award Fund is separate from the Reunion Fund.  As of June 2009, the balance in the Award Fund is just over $500.  Without your support, the continuance of the award is in danger. Most awards given at Commencement are $500 and above while ours is a $100 Savings Bond.  Donations can be made by check payable to the IHS Class of 1968 Award Fund and mailed to:

The winner of the Memorial Award for 2009 is Jessica Brown.
Her accomplishments include:
- One year Varsity Tennis, four years each Varsity Softball and Varsity Cheerleader
- Cum Laude Graduate with a GPA of 3.34

This year our presenter was our classmate Mary Holt Barbour, whose nephew Heath Friend is a member of the class of 2009.

It was a very special presentation and Mary did a great job.  Thanks Mary!
