Born in Canada, Eric moved to St. Canard only a couple of years ago. He found a job as a sales clerk, but lost it when his company was taken over and downsized. Angry and depressed, and already feeling lonely in the strange city, Eric drove to Duckburg and proceeded to drink. He was thrown out of the bar later and slept it off in his car. He drove home late that evening. Just outside St. Canard, he swerved to avoid missing an animal on the road, lost control of the car, and crashed into a tree...near the greenhouse of Reginald Bushroot.
Bushroot heard the noise and felt the pain of the tree being hit. He went outside and found Eric badly injured. Bushroot pulled him from the car and stopped profuse bleeding from his arm, saving Eric's life.
Eric was grateful to Bushroot, and they had many visits in the hospital. It was only after Eric was home and had invited Reginald over one evening that he learned the truth about him. But he accepted Reginald at once. Far from being afraid of his plant-like form, Eric was fascinated by Reggie's story.
Bushroot later learned by accident that Eric had been drinking the night of the accident, and was angry at first. But he later realized how unfair he was being, and made up with Eric.
Today, Eric works for the Chlorophyll World nursery. He and Bushroot are the closest of friends, and he has even repaid his debt to Reginald by saving Bushroot's father's life. It seems the future for this friendship is bright.
Reginald Bushroot is the botanist who transformed himself into a half-plant, half-duck during an experiment one evening. At first revenge against those who had tormented him drove him, and he soon wanted to strike out at anybody who tried to get in the way of whatever he wanted.
Bushroot spent much time in the company of criminals, feeling that was the only form of friendship possible for him. But he later renounced his criminal past, realizing that a life of lonliness was ahead.
Then came the fateful night that Eric Smith's car crashed into a tree near Bushroot's greenhouse. He saved Eric's life, and a friendship blossomed quickly. Eric even accepted Reginald's plant-like nature without question, and later saved his father's life.
Bushroot now has found satisfaction, that comes with true friendship. Few people have ever had a closer bond than he and Eric do. Eric has shown interest and respect for Bushroot's love of plants, and Reginald has in turn become a fan of some of Eric's passions, such as ice hockey. Reginald has turned from shame and worry over his plant-like form to out-and-out pride in who he is, thanks partly to a visit to his old house and the rediscovery of his past life. He has completely renounced his criminal past, believing that he was a different person then, and that person was gone for ever, leaving in it's place a man who specializes in botany, loyalty, pride and friendship.
