Cairngorm Mountain
Cairgorm Mountain is one of Scotland's 5 ski centres. It is situated in the Cairgorms, a plateau of hills over 3000ft, just south of Aviemore, about a 40 minute drive from Inverness. During the winter, the resort operates as long is there is snow, and the windspeed is not above 80mph. In the summer, tourists can access the great views offered from the top, by taking the funicular.
History
In the 1950's, after the war, a group of businessmen and landowners saw an oppertunity to offer skiing to the public on Cairngorm. In 1956, the Cairgorm Sports Development Fund was set up to try and raise funding in order to begin a ski centre.
The company which runs the area has been known as many different things-
Up to 1978- Cairngorm Sports Development Fund Ltd.
1978-2001- Cairngorm Chairlift Company Ltd.
Since 2001- Cairngorm Mountain Ltd.
