Science Club Newsletter

2005-2006

What is the Science Club?

Each month you will have the chance to compete against other members in science related events.  Many of these events challenge you to create a device that will accomplish a specific task, such as to protect an egg from breaking in the Egg Drop or projects from the Junk Box Wars.  Science Club members also have the opportunity to participate in environment projects in the community.  The Science Club is for students both 7th and 8th grade.

How do I become a member?

Review this information page with your parents, and then complete the registration form.  Return the registration form by October 14th, 2005 to participate in this year’s events.  Listen to the school announcements and watch the calendar for details about each month’s event.

Many of the events are team events allowing you to work with other club members.  Encourage your friends to join the Science Club.

How do I participate in the events?

To participate in any event, you need to see me for the event rules and sign up by each event’s deadline.  You will not be allowed to participate in an event if you fail to sign-up by the deadline.

The competitions will be scheduled for Saturdays or after school.  I will try to avoid conflicts with other school and community events. If an absence is unavoidable, you should see me prior to the event to make alternate arrangements.

Each month a new project will be assigned.  This is an example of a project and timeline:

1st week: Project assigned, guest speaker, research topic, begin project.

2nd week: Work on project at school (morning or after school) or at home.

3rd week: Finish project and begin testing.

4th week: Competition week.

Do I have to participate in every event?

No, you can choose the events and activities you want.  You will earn points for participating in each event, and other activities throughout the year.  Members earn points for projects and other activities.  At the end of the year, students will be awarded according to points gathered.  Students who are active members will be permitted to attend any science field trips.

What are the Science Club rules?

Good behavior is expected at all science club events.  Behavior that puts the safety of others at risk will result in the loss of science club privileges for the remainder of the year.  Members with failing grades will be considered ineligible until those grades improve.
