PRATICING AT HOME
So, you don't own your own studio? Well there are several things you can do to fix that.
1. If you have the room and your parents or yourself are willing to go out and buy a dance floor or some plywood, go ahead, my friend has her whole garage in plywood and her parents drive over it when they need to put the cars away. Dance floors are becoming more and more available to fit every type of budget.
2. Practice using the little amount of room you have. Find a space that your parents tell you its o.k. (just so you don't break anything), and work on little elements of your steps. Work on parts of steps or specific movements like butterflies, doubles or even triples. :)
3. You can practice just about anytime anywhere. I practice trebles when I brush my teeth. When I'm brushing my bottom left teeth I do 25 slow good trebles. I just brush my foot in front of the still one, out, in, out, in. I continue with the bottom right doing 25, then the top left, and top right both 25 trebles. I alternate feet so that when I do the left teeth my left foot is moving, and the same with the right. This way every night each foot gets 50 good trebles and my teeth get really clean.
5. Use music to get you motivated. If you can't motivate yourself to practice then use a tune that makes you want to dance and get some practice in. I use the tune King of the Fairies and the trak 8 reel on Damien McKee's "Mind the Step" (That C.D. is one of the coolest one's out there.) In my opinion any practice is good practice. For some reason if I listen to King of the Fairies, I need to go and practice right then. Thats the biggest motivator for me. Getting my stuff together for practice is half the battle.
5. If your allowed to dance practically everywhere in your house and you have a nice long hallway, this is a good place to practice without really practicing. When you walk down this hallway to get to the other side, work on turn out, do good leaps, or anything else you would need a nice long space to practice. I have a long hallway that leads to a bathroom, whenever I'm on my way to go use it I try to do something that I need to work on.
