| How to get a skatepark built | ||||||
| 1.Start a club. In order to get insurance on a public skatepark you will need to start a skatepark users club. It is better to do this at the very begining as councilors and local authorities will take you more seriously if you are organised. Include anyone who will use the park, skaters , BMXers and bladers, the more members you have the better your chance of success. Also as a sports club you will be able to apply for funding from Local Sports Partnerships and other bodies. 2. Start a petition , the more names you can get on paper and present to the council the better. They need to see that the community backs your demands and that it's not just a few isolated skaters. 3.Decide what you want. Keep it within reason, no local council in Ireland is going to build a full sized concrete park or an indoor park in the next few years. Try and agree between yourselves what you would most like to have in the park. Decide upon an area away from housing and trees and which is near other sports facilities if possible. If there is suitable land near a local sports centre this would be the most ideal as any facility will need to be supervised. 4. Attend a council meeting and present your petition. Be ready for arguements against your plans. Councilors may object on the grounds of insurance costs, noise pollution, that skateboarding is a fad that wont last. Have your answers ready and have them backed up by figures. If you can convince them of the need for facilities don't expect them overnight. They will generally want to do a preliminary feasability report which will take a few months. 5. Don't give up! Keep attending meetings and keep the pressure on. |
