Lobster traps

Lobster pots or traps as they are known in some countries are the most used method of lobster fishing globally. They are quite a brilliant invention and I am going to explain how lobster pots work and how they are best fished.
The pot itself is very strongly made with steel welded at the joints. The frame is then covered with a strong mesh which has then has two soft-eye mouths fitted so that the lobster can enter the pot.To protect the pot and the mesh it is then 'bumped' or wrapped in rope or rubber. In recent years the lobster pots have got a special plastic coating which protects the steel from deteriorating and rusting which can be a big problem over the years.

here is a picture of a parlour pot (like a lobster pot but with a bucket mouth)

see how they are made

The lobster pot is 'bumped' like the one in the picture. There are many types of lobster pots around the world and designs vary from place to place. The pots might have to be made of heavier steel if they are to be fished on wild ground.Lobster pots can be made of plastic, steel or timber but timber pots are rarely seen where I fish because they would be smashed by a combination of strong tides, jagged ground and surf.

here are a few pictures of different types of lobster pots
