It uses the same basic design as most Mosin rifles(Bolt, Magazine Ect).
It was Introduced to trials in 1943 to replace the M38 carbine. The M38 and the M44 are basically the same rifle(and most M38 rifles imported into the US have a M44 stock on them)with the exception of a side folding permanently attached Bayonet.
One thing that REALLY burns my ass is people who have the mentality that these rifle will last forever and make perfect candidates for BUBBA's Hacksaw.
"Its a $70 dollar rifle and there are millions of them--so who cares if i saw off the bayonet lug, drill and tap the reciever, put on a PLASTIC (i wont use that sythetic word here--we are talking about MENS RIFLES) stock.
I catch alot of flack from the "SPORTER" guys--but i dont really care. Think about it--in the 60's you could get a M1 Garand for 50 bucks anywhere, but WHERE ARE THEY NOW??.

Only modification i did was restore the stock, because when i got it it looked like a Tomato stake.
