He was not killed, but had one leg amputated.

...George Stutzman lay near the fence beside the road; his left leg was blown off at the knee; and a piece from the knee 8 inches toward to hip was blown to atoms, found some distance away, having struck the upper rail of the fence and knocking off a paling in its flight. (We saw the rail yet smeared with blood and flesh Sunday morning.) The right arm was broken between the elbow and hand, and the left arm torn off at the shoulder, as clean and smooth as though cut with a knife....
...George Stutzman, second child, born 10-8-1853, died in the explosion, @ age 28. He was married, and had one daughter, Mattie, b. Dec 1881m 2 mos. approx."
