Some frequently asked questions:
What does the hygienist do?
THE ROLE OF THE HYGIENIST
The Hygienist is an
important link in the chain of preventive dentistry. It is the Hygienist who
will show you how to prevent and deal with the two main dental diseases; gum
disease and tooth decay.
Can I Prevent Plaque from Forming?
Not entirely, however with careful cleaning using special aids such a floss between the teeth, you can control the amount of damage to the gums and teeth.
Your hygienist will advise
you of your own individual needs.
What is Plaque and Tartar?
Plaque is a soft, sticky, difficult to see, colourless substance. It collects mainly next to the gums and between the teeth.
When this soft deposit is combined with saliva it will begin to solidify and form a hard deposit known as tartar. This happens mostly behind the lower front teeth.
Once tartar has formed it can only be removed by the Hygienist or Dentist.
Do I need to visit the Hygienist?
Even with the most meticulous oral hygiene regime, all people would benefit from seeing the hygienist from time to time.
It will be your dentist who will recommend you visit the Hygienist, and advise the number and frequency of appointments..
It may be necessary to have
one visit or several, depending on the individual.

Why do some people need to visit more often?
Where appropriate, it may be necessary to have regular two or three monthly visits to the Hygienist.
Patients with implants, gum disease, a high decay rate or multiple crowns and bridges are encouraged to have regular visits, where the Hygienist will offer supportive therapy in maintaining and reinforcing good oral hygiene and health.
Will I notice a difference after my visit?
Absolutely. In all cases, scaling leaves the teeth and mouth feeling fresh and clean.
It is worth noting that if
gums are inflamed, the initial scaling visit may be a little sensitive, but
topical and local anaesthetics are available for patients who feel they have an
area where teeth and gums are particularly sensitive.
Once an effective brushing and flossing technique is developed, patients will notice much less plaque and tartar build-up resulting in a more relaxed and comfortable hygienic session.
