Vae Victis!

22 March 1809
Attention aux Ordres!
A new comrade has joined the brotherhood of the Modern Centaurs: Lieutenant Harry Skinters, an experienced warrior, assumes command of 7/2 Artillerie à cheval, effective this date. Welcome, Monsieur!

Lieutenant Alain Braun, heretofore commander of 7/2 Artillerie à Cheval, assumes command of the 7ème Régiment de Dragons.

Vive l'Empereur!

23 April 1808
Attention aux Ordres!
It is the pleasure and command of our august Empereur to grant to Monsieur Alain Braun a commission as Lieutenant in la Grande Armée. Effective immediately, Lieutenant Braun assumes command of 7/2 Artillerie à Cheval, 2ème Division de Dragons.

For completion of his training, Lieutenant Braun needs maneuver matches with fellow members of the Ier Corps de Réserve de Cavalerie. Let every available brother among the Modern Centaurs step forward to cross swords with Lieutenant Braun and prepare him for future thrashing of the Empire's foes!

4 February 1808
Attention, Cavaliers et Artilleurs!
Our esteemed comrade, Maréchal Dean Beecham, commander of the 1ère Division de Cuirassiers, has been selected to assume command of the II Corps, Armée du Nord! This is a signal honor, very richly deserved, as anyone acquainted with Maréchal Beecham can testify. As he rides forth to new glory, our brother carries with him the unanimous best wishes and congratulations of the Modern Centaurs!

This event creates an opening for division command. Ambitious officers eager to lead from the front should contact Corps HQ to indicate interest. Vae Victis!

1 December 1807
Attention aux Ordres!
Changes in the 1ère Division de Cuirassiers:
Lieutenant Prezmek Niedzielski is assigned to command of the 11ème Régiment de Cuirassiers, replacing Capitaine Goeller.
Lieutenant Robert Noftz, newly graduated from l'École de Guerre, is assigned to command of the 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval.

Welcome, Monsieur Noftz, to the brotherhood of the Modern Centaurs! Vae Victis!!

2 July 1807
Monsieur Michael Goeller, by valiant multicommander service on the field of honor in Saxony, in company with Marchal Beecham, has won favor in the eyes of l'Empereur and earned promotion to the rank of Capitaine! Bravo!

(The next round of drinks will be bought by our newly promoted friend: gather round, brothers!)

Lieutenant-Colonel Al Amos is awarded the Ordre de la Couronne de Fer Couronne de Fer in recognition of his great lifetime contribution to the profession of arms. Vive "Famous" Amos!

1 March 1807
Attention aux Ordres!
Lieutenant Michael Goeller assumes command of the 11ème Régiment de Cuirassiers, 2ème Brigade, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers.

Sous-Lieutenant Prezmek Niedzielski, having completed his initial training with aplomb, is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Lieutenant Niedzielski assumes command of 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval, succeeding Lieutenant Goeller in that post.

Congratulations to these splendid young officers! Vae Victis!

5 February 1807
By order of the commander:

The following officers are transfered to the Reserve:
Messieurs Raido, Hunt, Cecrops (Garcia), Holmberg.

If it is thought that these transfers are in error, please contact Corps HQ.
Vive l'Empereur!

3 December 1806
Attention aux Ordres!
Lieutenant Michael Goeller, having completed his training with distinction, is assigned command of 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval in the 1ère Division de Cuirassiers. Congratulations to Lieutenant Goeller, who, by tradition, is buying drinks for all Modern Centaurs at Pierre's Tavern tonight!

Général Stuart Wilson is transferred from command of 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval to the 2ème Régiment de Carabiniers, replacing Monsieur Bill Brockman, who is retiring (temporarily, we hope!) from the Corps.

18 October 1806
Messieurs, Cavaliers et Artilleurs de l'Empire!
A new officer cadet has joined the Escadron de Vélites: Sous-Lieutenant Michael Goeller. Welcome to our new brother!

12 October 1806
Attention aux Ordres!
The Modern Centaurs proudly welcome a new brother: Général Stuart Wilson, lately Chef d'Etat-Major of l'Armée du Nord, has chosen to enhance his career by moving up to command of 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval. The Corps will greatly benefit from the expert fire support provided by this distinguished officer.

Vae Victis!
Vive l'Empereur!

18 August 1806
Promotion Announcements:
Sean Turner has been promoted to the rank of Chef d'Escadron.
Monsieur Cecrops (alias Andres Garcia) has been promoted to the rank of Capitaine.
Please join in congratulating our brother Modern Centaurs on their achivements, and help them to spend their increased pay at Pierre's Tavern (the newly promoted always offer their comrades a round of drinks)!

3 August 1806
Brothers! Please join in celebrating the award of l'Ordre de Napoléon to our own Maréchal Dean Beecham, in recognition of long, distinguished, and selfless service to La Grande Armée!
Vive Dean!

19 April 1806
Attention aux ordres!
The following changes in the Order of Battle are effective immediately:
Lieutenant Bill Brockman assumes command of the 2ème Régiment de Carabiniers, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers.
Lieutenant Eugene Holmberg assumes command of the 4ème Régiment de Dragons, 2 ème Division de Dragons.
Lieutenant Don Golen, a veteran newly reactivated from the Reserves, assumes command of the 7ème Régiment de Dragons, 2ème Division de Dragons.

Lieutenant-Colonel Neville Worland, Corps Chef d'État-Major, is on temporary leave-of-absence due to pressing affairs in the Antipodes (rumored by some to involve high finance, cattle ranching, sultry South Seas maidens, and an uprising by Irish convicts to seize control of the Botany Bay Colony and attach those vast territories to l'Empire). Stand by for further bulletins!

20 February 1806
Général de Brigade Malcolm Fletcher Cumberlidge, eager to spend less time at a desk and more time sabering the enemies of l'Empereur, has exchanged his position as Corps Chef d'État-Major for command of the 2ème Division de Dragons. Lieutenant-Colonel Neville Worland, undoubtedly the best Australian cavalryman in the Grande Armée, has moved from command of the 2ème Division de Dragons to the post of Corps Chef d'État-Major. This means that the friendly, cajoling, and occasionally threatening letters sent to officers to remind them to send in their muster reports each month will now be written in the Australian language, or "Strine", a tongue thought by some to be distantly related to English.

A new recruit, Sous-Lieutenant Christopher McIsaac, joins the brotherhood of the Modern Centaurs today. Welcome, Monsieur!

1 January 1806
Lieutenant Eugene Holmberg, a veteran of the Russian service, has seen the light and pledged his sword to the cause of France and l'Empereur. Lieutenant Holmberg assumes command of 7/2 Artillerie à Cheval, 2ème Division de Dragons, vacated by Lieutenant Alvarez. Let all give a rousing welcome to our newest brother in the Modern Centaurs!

8 December 1805
Monsieur Bill Brockman has been granted a commission as a Lieutenant, and has assumed command of 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval. Lieutenant Brockman succeeds Lieutenant Lipa, who has been reported missing in action. Vae Victis!

4 December 1805
Attention aux Ordres!
L'Empereur, in the aftermath of the glorious Battle of Austerlitz (2 December), has honored the following officers of the Ier Corps de Réserve de Cavalerie:
Général de Brigade Malcolm Fletcher Cumberlidge: Officier de la Légion d'Honneur
Colonel Jorge Oscar Raido: Étoile Militaire
Lieutenant-Colonel Neville Worland: Étoile Militaire
Lieutenant-Colonel Albert Amos: Médaille Militaire

Let every member of the Modern Centaurs join in congratulating these brothers. Junior officers, look to these men as examples and role-models to emulate!

24 November 1805
Général de Brigade Mario Ostojic, alias Ferraud, has returned after a brief absence and reassumed command of the 2ème Brigade, 2ème Division de Dragons.

16 October 1805
Monsieur Al "Famous" Amos has been promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. Congratulations!

15 October 1805
Colonel Richard Davies, long missing in action, has reported back to the Corps, alive and well! As his old regiment was reassigned in his absence, Colonel Davies is promoted to command of the 2ème Brigade, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers, as befits his rank and seniority. Welcome home, brother!

There may have been some confusion in assignments: The Moniteur and the Corps website showed Colonel Jorge Oscar Raido in command of the 2ème Brigade, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers, while the official OOB showed him in command of the 1ère Brigade. Mon Dieu! Quelle contretemps! To put things back in order, the website and the Moniteur have been altered to match the OOB submitted to l'Armée du Nord. That is, Colonel Raido commands the 1ère Brigade.

The Escadron de Vélites welcomes another new trainee: Sous-Lieutenant John Graham. Monsieur Graham has set a new record by adopting a personal motto within 4 days of joining the Corps, to wit: La beauté est le commencement de la terreur (Beauty is the beginning of terror). The Old Man interprets this to mean that the flashy and colorful uniforms of the French cavalry, our handsome and well-groomed steeds, fluttering guidons, and gleaming steel and brass, are a sight to strike terror into the foe. Vae Victis!!

5 August 1805
Colonel Jorge Oscar Raido has assumed command of the 1ère Brigade, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers.

Lieutenant Cecrops has completed training, and been assigned to command the 11ème Régiment de Cuirassiers, 2ème Brigade, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers.

Sous-Lieutenant Erick Wingate and Sous-Lieutenant Nigel Heppenstall have joined the Escadron de Vélites to train as the newest members of the Modern Centaurs. Welcome, Gentlemen! Vae Victis!!

3 July 1805
Lieutenant-Colonel Neville Worland has been appointed Commandant of the 2ème Division de Dragons. The Pommie sods and other sooky bogans of the bodgy Allied Coalition are in grave danger, as this talented dinkum swagman, with many a jolly jumbuck stuffed in his tucker bag, decamps from his billabong and brings his uniquely Australian style of warfare to his new pozzy as division commander. It'll be ripper, Mate!

2 July 1805
Monsieur Bill Brockman has joined the Escadron de Vélites and begun his training. Welcome to this new brother! A special commendation should be extended to Marchal Beecham for his indefatigable and successful efforts at recruitment. Vae Victis!!

1 June 1805
Monsieur A. Lipa, a veteran of the Russian service, has completed his training in la Grande Armée and received a commission as lieutenant. Lieutenant Lipa assumes command of 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval. Welcome, Monsieur, to the brotherhood of the Modern Centaurs! Vae Victis!

Lieutenant Malcolm Hunt is transferred from 4/5 Artillerie à Cheval, assuming command of the 1er Régiment de Carabiniers.

Mario Ostojic is promoted to Général de Brigade. Another one of the Old Man's former trainees makes good!

Jorge Oscar Raido is promoted to Colonel. Congratulations!

The Old Man departs 2 June for a tour of inspection of the Imperial colonies in North America, followed by inspections of l'Armée du Midi (the south of France) and l'Armée d'Italie. June Muster Reports should be submitted by 25 June.

18 May 1805
The Wheel of Time Turns:
Général Ian Weightman has chosen to retire from la Grande Armée. This upstanding warrior will be missed. May you enjoy many years of peace and happiness, brother! Trompette-Major, sound Aux Champs!

Colonel Glyn Hargreaves, answering the call of his native Grande-Bretagne, has elected to lay down his Imperial Commission and offer his sword in service to le roi Georges. Shocking as this change of allegiance may be, we respect and salute Monsieur Hargreaves as a man of honor, following the call of his conscience, as every true man must.

As a matter of courtesy and the bonds of brotherhood, any officer of the Ier Corps de Réserve de Cavalerie meeting a former member of our Modern Centaurs, in hostile uniform, on the champ d'honneur (battlefield) is urged to defeat the strayed brother's foreign mercenary rabble, but to avoid killing the brother. He should be captured alive, and brought to the Officers' Mess, there to be made comfortable and plied with food, drink, and good conversation until his exchange is arranged. Should the brother have gone quite berserk with battle-lust, and be found standing alone and defiant, clutching the bullet-shredded standard of the despot's regiment that lies incapacitated at his feet, the brother should be rendered unconscious by a smart blow to the top of his head with the flat of a cavalry saber. On no account should a strayed brother be killed, if avoidable.
Vae Victis!!

11 May 1805
Monsieur Neville Worland, guardian of our southern flank and world-champion maître de stoush, has been officially promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. Look for Neville's account of another stoushing of "Muddy" Jones in NWC Newsletter XXIV, coming soon!

1 May 1805
Capitaine Ken Cassady has elected to retire from active duty. Farewell, Ken! This opens a vacancy for commander of the prestigious 2ème Régiment de Carabiniers. Any officer of rank Capitaine or above who wishes to apply for that post should contact Maréchal Peterson.
Vae Victis!!

28 April 1805
Sous-Lieutenant Juan Alvarez has won his commission as a Lieutenant, and has assumed command of 7/2 Artillerie à Cheval, 2ème Division de Dragons. Let us give a rousing welcome to this newest brother among the Modern Centaurs! Vae Victis!!

15 April 1805
Lieutenant-Colonel Jorge Oscar Raido, a seasoned veteran formerly in command of the 9ème Régiment de Cuirassiers of the 3ème Division, is returning to action! Lieutenant-Colonel Raido assumes command of the 11me Cuirassiers, 2ème Brigade, 1ère Division de Cuirassiers, recently vacated by Jeff Bardon. Welcome back, Oscar!

9 April 1805
The Old Man, Commandant of this august Corps d'élite, has just been awarded his baton as a Maréchal de l'Empire! Let the bells ring, let the trumpets sound, and let the casks be broached! Party tonight at Pierre's Tavern! Vae Victis!!

3 April 1805
Corps Pages Reopen!
After nearly a year, the Premier Corps de Réserve de Cavalerie once again presents a fresh and current face to the world! Many changes have occurred in the interim, not least being the coronation of Sa Majesté Impériale, Napoléon, Empereur des Français on 2 December 1804 (see NWC Newsletter XXIII). Other items:

Le Chef d'Etat-Major, Général de Brigade Malcolm Cumberlidge is on leave of absence, studying for a promotion board.

Dean Beecham has become a Maréchal de l'Empire and Commandant of la Jeune Garde. This means he currently outranks The Old Man (although that grizzled veteran has hopes of joining the Marshalate shortly)! Maréchal Beecham has been his usual open, friendly, and comradely self in spite of this high distinction, even allowing The Old Man to retain nominal command in their joint Guards Challenge endeavor at Eckmuhl. Of course, Monsieur le Maréchal occasionally finds it necessary to beat The Old Man about the head with his baton, in remonstrance for some error (such as letting a few batteries be overrun).

Maréchal Jeff Bardon has given up command of the 11ème Régiment de Cuirassiers for an even more prestigious position: Commandant of La Grande Armée! This should not be too much of a sacrifice, as he can always call upon his old regiment to serve as part of his headquarters escort.

The 3ème Division de Cuirassiers has been inactivated, and its officers transferred to the 1ère Division de Cuirassiers and the 2ème Division de Dragons.

25 April 1804
Attention, cavaliers! L'Empereur Napoléon recognizes the diligent and distinguished services of our veteran Chef d'Etat-Major, Monsieur Malcolm Cumberlidge, and awards him the rank of Général de Brigade. This calls for a General Celebration! Vive le Chef d'Etat-Major! Vive l'Empereur! Vae Victis!!
Monsieur Neville Worland, the Stoush champion of the Antipodes, is promoted to Capitaine. Let us hope that this exalted rank, with its heavy burdens of responsibility and lavish pay, will not change our Neville from the cheerful, unpretentious, Pommie-bashing scare-Devil we have grown to appreciate.

15 March 1804
L'Empereur has been pleased to award the following promotions to his deserving officers:
Dean Beecham to Général.
Martin Saes to Lieutenant-Colonel.
Rob Burns to Chef d'Escadron.
