ANTHI DOVA XXth Department of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, (Greece) Prehistoric Topography of LemnosThe Important geographic position of Lemnos in front of the entrance of Dardanelia and Ellisponto and her geomorphology, designate the great cultural developement that this island met from the end of the Neolithic Period and during the Early Bronze Age. The multifarious developement is illuminated by the excavations of Poliochni but also from the data of the excavations that are conducted during the last years in the prehistoric settlement Myrina and Koukonisi. Especially important are the data that arise from the first inhabitation of Myrina that is set at the Last Neolithic Period during the 4th millennium B.C. Moreover, the developement of Lemnos during the third millennium B.C., is shown also by the density of its habitation. The archaeological research has discovered at least fifteen settlements of the Early Bronze Age at the island. Most of them are situated at coastal positions, on low hills or besides to natural ports for the service of maritime trade. In addition, they provide close cultivable fields so as to ensure the sufficiency in agricultural and stock-breeding products. In the forthcoming announcement, a more analytical presentation of these unknown or scarcely known position of the Early bronze Age in Lemnos will take place.
