About the Project

Project Summary: Third Grade Students participating in the Open Court Reading Program have the wonderful opportunity to learn respect for money at a very early age.  During the unit, teachers will lead students in exploring four major concepts that will foster good money management techniques in their adult lives.  Through a hands-on, inquiry based learning approach, in addition to enjoying rich literature, the students will investigate the following topics:

1.  The Different Forms of Money

2.  How Money Works

3.  The Role Money Plays in People's Lives and Businesses

4.  Respect for Money and the Important Things in Life it Cannot Buy

This collaboration project will not only foster much needed values and respect for money, but also allow students to engage in applying technological skills to their literacy lessons.  Students must choose one four topics above to investigate.  Then use an educational software of your choice and/or technology medium (graphics [in .jpeg format], slide shows (no more than 5 slides), movie makers [in .wav format], etc) to complete their work samples.  Cooperative learning groups in the same class may choose different topics to explore. A maximum of six (6) computer generated projects will be accepted per class for publishing in the student showcase section.  Students are encouraged to work in cooperative learning groups to complete the projects.

This project does not endorse the use of any particular educational software, but examples of kid-friendly software include:

  1. Kid Pix
  2. Kidspiration
  3. Hyperstudio
  4. Microsoft Powerpoint
  5. Paint (found in the accessories of most computers with a Windows operating system)
