3 man up and back

1) Full Court Passing

Ball starts in the middle with 2.

Players 1, 2 & 3 run their lanes to the half way line.

1 then makes a pass to player 4 who catches the ball on the move.

2) 4 now passes the ball to 5 who then passes the ball to 6 who makes a lay up at the other end of the floor.

Emphasize:

  • sprint the lanes, wide and fast.

  • need to make good, strong, crisp passes.

  • get rid of the ball quickly.

  • call names of the player you are passing the ball to.

    Variation:
Run a 3 man weave to the half way line.

    4 passes, score and back

    1) Needed
    5 players
    1 ball

    Drill
    Players stay in their lane.

    Sequence
    1 passes to 2.
    2 passes to 3.
    3 passes to 4.
    4 passes to 5.

    2) After 5 has scored. 1 rebounds the ball

Reset with players 2 and 3 out side and 4 and 5 inside, and start again.

    Also a good conditioning drill.

    5 lane passing

    1) This is an excellent drill, which emphasizes all aspects of man-2-man defensive coverage, increases the offense's ability to pass and receive the pass under immense pressure, and develops team communication and court spacing.  It is a great tool in teaching offensive players efficiency in getting open.

I find this drill very effective in teaching intensity and internal motivation, resetting without dwelling on the mistake, and working together.

    2) NEED:
    10 players, 1 ball
Choose 5 players to be offense and 5 players to be defense.  Assign each pair to play in one of the 5 lanes as designated on the diagram.  Neither member of this pair is allowed to go outside of their lane.

    OBJECTIVE:
Offense moves the ball up the court; with every offensive player having to receive a minimum of 2 passes.  The drill is done when one of the offensive members receives a pass while standing on the opposite baseline.

    3) DEFENSIVE INSTRUCTION:
When a defender is playing on the ball they must continuously yell "Ball".  If the ball is one pass away, the defender slips into deny defense and yells "Deny".  Once the ball is two passes away, the defender plays help defense and yells "Help".  They must always actively challenge the ball.

    OFFENSIVE INSTRUCTION:
Once an offensive player receives a pass, they must yell out the number of passes they have received.  This will help the offense know when they can complete the drill.

    4) RULES:
    1. No dribbling.  Get your players used to pivoting under pressure.

    2. If the defense steals the ball or causes it to go out of bounds, the offense must reset at the baseline.  Insist that your players reset without instruction.

    3. A loose ball can only be retrieved by the person in the lane it is in.

    Alabasta passing

    1) Alabasta Passing

Players line up on the court as per in the diagram. 1 passes the ball to 5, 2 to 6, 4 to 7, and 3 to 8. The following rotations are the same for all players:

  • 1 passes to 5, 5 passes back to 1

  • 5 then defensive slides up to the elbow and receives the pass from 2 and passes the ball back

  • 5 then defensively slides diagonally across the key to the opposite block and receives a pass from 3 then passes the ball back

  • 5 then slides up to the elbow and receives the passes from 4 then returns the pass

Focus is on quick, hard passes and defensive stances. Drill for 2 or 3 minutes.

  • Top

    Arsego drill

    1) Arsego Drill

Players 2 and 3 pass the ball back and forth till the half court line, whilst players 1 and 4 sprint the lanes.

After 2 catches the ball at the halfway line, a pass is made to 4 for a lay up. 1 swings through underneath the basket.

    2) 3 rebounds the ball and makes a pass to 2 who passes to 4 (who has swung through after making the lay up). 4 then makes a long pass to 1 for a lay up.

    Emphasize:

  • Sprint the lanes wide and fast.

  • Need to make good, strong, crisp passes.

  • Get rid of the ball quickly.

  • Call names of the player you are passing the ball to.

  • Top

    Chinese passing

    1) Chinese Passing (Beijing Ducks)

  • 2 lines on baseline no wider than the key. Defender in each jump circle

  • 1 and 2 pepper pass as they sprint down the court

  • Defenders in each circle try and steal the ball from 1 and 2

  • Defenders can only move in the jump circle

  • 1 and 2 are encouraged to sprint, catch the ball in the air and pass the ball while in the air together with fakes.

    Dribble weave

    1) 3 or more players 1 or more balls

The dribble weave, is similar to a normal
    weave.

In a weave player 1 passes to player 3 and
player 1 runs behind player 3.

Player 3 passes to player 2 and player 3
    runs behind player 2.

Than player 2 passes to player 1 and runs
behind player 1 starting the begin situation.

    2) This Pattern is repeated until
the end of the court is reached and a
    Lay-Up or  shot is scored.

You can chose between let the same group
come back before a second group starts

Or let the second group start after the middle
    line is passed.
In this case the first group waits until the last
group has reached the other side of the
court and then starts it's way back

    3) The dribble weave differs from a normal
weave in that after each pass the receiving
player has to make one dribble before
passing the ball to the next player.

During a past season I had a player that
was fast in the break but, slow in bringing
the ball down for a dribble to prevent
    travelling.

With this drill his handling skills did take a
major step in the right direction.

For the team it meant more easy baskets in
the break and more games won.

    4) While practising this drill.

Make sure the balls are still thrown
    correctly.

Be very alert on travels made.

While in a dribble go as much as possible in a straight line along the side line.

    Four lanes pass and change

    1) Four Lanes Pass and Change

  • Players 1, 2,  3 and 4 line up as shown.

  • 2 and 3 have a basketball.

  • All players move down the court.

  • 2 and 3 pass to the outside players 1 and 4 respectively. 2 and 3 then cross over.

  • 1 and 4 will pass the ball back to the players closest to them. These outside players will then continue moving up the court.

  • 2 and 3 will return pass to the outside players, 2 and 3 will cross over.

  • Drill continues full court.

    Four-corners passing

    1) Focus:
Concentrate on proper execution for the dribble, pivot and pass drill.

    Procedure:
Players form four equal groups in the corners on the half court. Each group has a ball and should follow these steps:

1.This is dribble, pivot and pass drill synchronized with a whistle or oral command by one of the players.

    2. Before starting the drill, the coach will call for either a right-foot pivot or a left-foot pivot.

    2) 3. On the command to start the drill, the players in the front of each line dribble the middle and stop just outside the free-throw circle. They continue dribbling until the whistle blows or the command to pivot is announced.

    4. The players, in unison, pivot and pass a two-handed chest pass the player in the next line. The players follow the pass and rotate to the next line.

    3) 5. The player receiving the pass must show a target by opening both palms to the passer.

    6. The coach can call "Reverse!" to change direction of the pivot at any time to keep the players alert and involved in the drill.

    Full court passing

    1) 4 or more players with a ball in two corners of the court.

4 other players at the elbows of the buckets.

Goal controlling the pass and pass distance at various speeds and passing distances.

Player 5 passes to player 1, 1 passes back to 5, 5 passes to 4 and receives the ball back.

At the end player 5 makes a shot or lay-up, rebounds his/hers own ball and starts the same drill on the other side.

Player 1 to 4 stay at their place at the elbow  for 1 minute after that they rotate with the other players.

    Top

    Gauntlet

    1) This is a passing toughness drill.
The player starts underneath the basket with a passer to his right, about even with the foul line, then a passer between half court and the foul line...being closer to half court...and then a passer between half court and the next foul line, once again, closer the line.

The player starts by passing to #2 as the player sprints towards the 1st defender, when the player gets there, the pass should arrive the same time, with the player catching it with a jump stop, and swinging the ball through hard, and stepping towards passer #3 with a hard bounce pass.

The defenders in this drill should be slapping at the players and the ball being very aggressive.

These steps continue throughout the drill, at the 3rd defender...the player should give a ball fake and go either right or left around the defender after catching the pass from the passer and doing a jump stop.

    Machine gun

    1) Machine Gun (or the nose breaker).

    6+ players

This drill incorporates good hand eye coordination, quickness, passing fundamentals, and the defensive slide.

Players line up at shoulders width along the baseline.  the first person sets up approx. 10' opposite the line.

The first player, (No. 8 in drawing), chest passes to 9. 9 passes to 6, while 7 is passing to 9. 9 passes to 5, while 6 passes to 9, etc.

    Coaching points:

    1. Be ready (why it's sometimes called the nose breaker).
    2. Good defensive slide.  Stay low, do not cross over legs.
    3. Not hard passes, just good touch passes to the chest.

    Speed comes with repetition.

each time you do this practise.

    Use more balls.

    Panther

    1) This is a very simple passing drill that looks harder than it really is.  It teaches the players the importance of good crisp passing, hand-eye coordination, peripheral vision and teamwork as if one piece breaks down, the entire drill is ruined.  It is also a very good conditioning drill as the pace picks up.

Eight or more players, evenly divided on four corners of the half-court.

This drill is best learned with only one ball, but is best ran with two or more. Example shown is with two.

Begin with balls on opposite corners. (1 & 5)

At the signal, both players give good passes to the corner to their right and follow the pass 1/2 the distance before cutting to the opposite corner.

    2) The receivers (3 & 7) immediately return the pass to the players cutting to the opposite corner (1 & 5).  As the cutters receive the ball, they then pass to the corner opposite from where they started.  When 3 & 7 pass the ball, they follow their pass and cut to the opposite corner.

    3) Just as in the last sequence, pass the ball to the cutter.  The cutter passes the ball to the opposite corner, and the passer from the corner follows and cuts.

    4) OVERVIEW:

This is a simple drill as each player is basically sprinting to the opposite corner while passing, receiving and passing again.  For an overview, follow one ball around the court.

    1.  Pass the ball to the right and follow and cut.

    2.  Receive a return pass and then pass to the opposite corner

    3.  Sprint to the end of the line in the opposite corner.

Change the flavor by changing directions, changing types of passes, and adding balls.

A very good pre game and start of practice drill.

    Top

    Rondo

    1) A simple passing drill that can be fun.
Put an uneven number of player,s in this case 9, around a circle.

Give a ball to player 1 and 9 and let them pass to the right skipping one player.

So the pass sequence will be 1-3-5-7-9-2-4-6-8-1 or 9-2-4-6-8-1-3-5-7-9 depending on your starting point.

The goal is for one ball to overtake the other.

As this might be a bit dull the following variations are possible:
    - Add balls, up to 9 shouldn't be a problem.
    - Change direction from anti-clockwise to clockwise on a signal.
    - Let the players tap their feet while passing.
    - Change the pass type on a signal.
    - Appoint different passes to each ball.
It might be handy to have different colored balls (orange chest pass, red white blue bounce pass, orange white overhead pass etc)

    Russian lay-up drill

    1) RUSSIAN LAY-UP DRILL

    #1 & #5 start with a ball each.

#1 has 0ne to two dribbles then passes 3/4 court to # 4 at the far elbow, he continues follow his pass.

At elbow extended #5 passes his ball to #1 who completes a lay-up, # 4 rebounds his ball and goes to the end of the line while #1 replaces for at the elbow.

#5 after passing to #1 he cuts towards the other end, #4 passes his ball (received from #1) to #3, he recieves it back at the elbow and completes a lay-up.

#3 rebounds and goes to the end of the line while #5 replaces at the elbow.

Both sides run at the same time and a competition can occur.

Look to build up the number of balls in use.

    1) Four players stand about two feet above the elbows of the keyway with the fifth player under the basket with the ball.

5 passes to 1 who is leading for the ball.

    5 takes 1's position.

    2) 1 passes to a leading 3 and the 1 replaces 3.

3 passes to a leading 2 and then replaces 2.

    3) 4 passes to a leading 2 and then replaces 2.

2 catches the ball and makes the lay-up.

The made shot is rebounded by 2 who hands off to 6.

The sequence then starts again with each player passing to the next.

8 or more players, 2 balls

    Practise passing in movement.

Players 3 and 7 move to the middle and
get the ball from the right off players 1 and 5.

I use this play in the warm up, just to let my players start concentrating on basketball and forget college or work.
If they are not concentrating the balls will hit them and wake them up.

    2) Players 3 and 7 pass the ball to 4 and 7
While players 1 and 5 move to the middle

During this practise you can change the
passing type from Chest to Bounce or
    Overhead.

    3) Players 4 and 8 pass the ball to players 5 and  1 who get the ball from the right.

After receiving the ball players 1 and 5 pass to 6 and 2

After the passing the players follow the pass to there new position.

    4) Players 2 and 6 pass the ball to  4 and 8 who get the ball from the right.

After receiving the ball players 4 and 8 pass to 3 and 7

After the passing the players follow the pass to there new position.

    1) This is a passing drill I sometimes use in a warmup.

The basic thought is pass and follow the ball.

So 3 passes to 5 and follows the pass.

1 passes to 7 which will make a lay-up and 1 will go to the start point of 7.

    2) 7 will catch the ball and should make a lay-up
    without a dribble.

In the mean time 5 passes to 2

    3) 7 makes his lay-up and rebounds his own ball.

    4) And we are back at the starting situation

It can also be played the other way around with lay-ups from the left.

    Warriors passing drill

    1) Warriors Passing Drill
    ================

This drill combines outlet passing, passing from the outlet position back to the middle of the floor, long passes on the run to a player up the floor and passing from the wing to the cutter / trailer / low-post.

Start with 6 players on the court as shown, the rest out of bounds under the basket (the triangles).

O1 and O4 start by throwing the ball off the backboard to simulate a rebound and  then throwing an OVERHEAD pass to their respective outlet, O2 and O5.
    O1 and O4 run down the inside fast-beak lanes (~ elbow-of-the-key to elbow-of-the-key).
O2 and O5 TWO-HAND CHEST pass back to O1 and O4 then run down the sideline to replace O3 and O6.
O1 and O4 make a long TWO-HAND  CHEST pass on the run to O3 and O6, younger players may have to take a dribble or two before passing.
O3 and O6 PUSH pass back to O1and O4 cutting down the lane for the lay-up or low-post move.
O3 and O6 follow their pass, rebound the shot and go to the end of the line.
O1 and O4 run through the lay-up and go to the outlet positions just vacated by O2 and O5.

    2) Warriors Passing Drill
    ================

The next player in line (the triangles) steps on from under the basket and throws the ball off the backboard to simulate a rebound.  The play continues as in the previous sequence.

The coach can vary the type of finishing play... either a lay-up, jump shot or low-post move.

Player should call all positions.  eg... OUTLET! ... MIDDLE! ...HAMMER! (wing) ... NAIL! (trailer/cutter)
(see Category - Secondary Break; Name - Hammer and Nails Transition)
