Viciously Hard Nintendo Riddles (Answers)

This section is the answers and explanations to each riddle. Riddles that haven't been solved by someone yet won't show up here.

(1) "They say I'm bad, but I'm just mixed up, cut in the middle, then switched up."
Answer: Waluigi
Franchise: Super Mario Brothers
How it Works: This is a play on words. Waluigi's name isn't simply Luigi with a 'Wa' added to the front. It's actually based on the Japanese word "ijiwaru," which can mean 'bad' or 'twisted.' If you take ijiwaru and cut it in half, into iji and waru, then mix it up, you get waru-iji, aka, Waluigi.

(2) "I keep your silverware in my head, but it isn't butter than I spread."
Answer: Chibi-Robo
Franchise: Chibi-Robo!
How it Works: A simple reference, in his game Chibi stores a number of objects in his head, including a spoon. He main objective throughout his games is to 'Spread the Happiness', as is frequently repeated by his manager, Telly Vision.

(3) "As long as you're quick, go for start, they'll see stars, I'll keep heart."
Answer: Little Mac
Franchise: Punch-Out!!
How it Works: This is based on the gameplay of Punch-Out!!. Essentially, pressing the 'start' button enables Little Mac to perform his uppercut, which you can only do when Mac has a star or two. If you're not fast enough or miss, Mac will get punched, and lose a heart. Losing all of his hearts causes him to be exhausted and reel on his feet.

(4) "Wish on me when I fall, I can swim but my sister can crawl."
Answer: Stafy
Franchise: The Legend of Stafy
How it Works: A simple reference, each of Stafy's four games starts with him taking a plummet, either voluntarily or not, from his homeland in the clouds into the ocean below. Since he's a star, that's the wishing segment. The crawling reference has to do with Stafy's little sister, Stapy, who has the ability to crawl.

(5) "I have 747 ways to allay your fears, but you can guess my name by what's in my ears."
Answer: Mike Jones
Franchise: StarTropics
How it Works: 747 is the number needed in StarTropics to continue the game past a certain point. It's memorable in that the actual code number was packaged with the game, in disappearing ink that only became visible when a letter it was written on was dunked in water in real life. What are in Mike's ears would be bananas, as he famously jams bananas into his ears to prevent the evil Zoda from attacking his mind at the end of the game. Other characters also joke when he's not listening prior to this event, asking, "What, do you have bananas in your ears or something?"

(6) "I can sleep beneath the grass, I'm a plumber in a looking glass."
Answer: Captain Olimar
Franchise: Pikmin
How it Works: The part about sleeping beneath the grass has to do with Olimar's small size, but the real hint is 'plumber in a looking glass.' In the original Japanese, Olimar's name reads "Orima", which is a direct reversal of Mario's name, again in Japanese characters. "Ma-Ri-O" becomes "O-Ri-Ma", and thus Olimar is the reversal of a plumber, in a looking glass or 'mirror'.

(7) "If you fail my laughter rings, but I'm the one to catch these things."
Answer: Laughing Dog
Franchise: Duck Hunt
How it Works: This reference's the infamous laughter of the Laughing Dog, who points at you and laughs when you fail to finish a round of Duck Hunt sucessfully. But despite laughing at you, the Laughing Dog catches the ducks you shoot down for you.

(8) "We come in groups but we're no gang, hammer, flame, and boomerang."
Answer: Hammer Brothers
Franchise: Super Mario Brothers
How it Works: A play on how Hammers Brothers typically appear in groups of two, the second half of the riddle names three varieties of them, Hammer Brothers, Fire Brothers, and Boomberang Brothers. There are also species such as Sledge Brothers but... it would've thrown off the meter.

(9) "I arrive with information undisclosed, you can drop me when I drop my clothes."
Answer: King Hippo
Franchise: Punch-Out!!
How it Works: Way too many people assumed this was Samus Aran... Odd. This refers to King Hippo, whose info on the Punch-Out pre-fight screen doesn't list all of his info, instead replacing it with question marks. The only real way to take out King Hippo effectively in the game, is to sock him in the face, causing him to drop his large trunks, at which point you can work his stomach repeatedly.

(10) "This tail and I we are not twins, my name ends where it begins."
Answer: Girafarig
Franchise: Pokemon
How it Works: Another play on words, this refers to not only Girafarig's 'head' tail, but also the fact that the character's name is a palindrome, i.e., if you spell it backwards, it's the exact same word. Thus the name ends exactly where it began.

(11) "When it comes to tiers, I can fill a bog, just keep in mind, I'm not a frog."
Answer: Mallow
Franchise: Super Mario RPG
How it Works: An intentional misspelling is used for this one. Think of 'tears' instead of 'tiers' and you'll see that it's talking about someone who can weep prodigiously (as Mallow does), and also was thought to be a frog for some time (Mallow was initially assumed to be a strange looking tadpole.)

(12) "You may think it odd to see me running, but I'm not crazy, I'm just cunning."
Answer: Fox McCloud
Franchise: Star Fox
How it Works: Since Fox spends most of his time in a cockpit, it's a bit strange to see his legs so ready to run, given that pilots typically suffer muscle atrophy from sitting so much. The second part is a reference to the phrase, "crazy like a fox," and the general cunning associated with foxes in fables.

(13) "From a merchant was my fate assigned, and I can tell what's on your mind."
Answer: Ivan
Franchise: Golden Sun
How it Works: Aside from being a mind-reader, Ivan was also sent on the way to his destiny by the merchant Hammond in the series Golden Sun.

(14) "I sing no tune, I know no rhyme, but when I play, it's hammer time."
Answer: Pit
Franchise: Kid Icarus
How it Works: In the Kid Icarus series, whenever Pit gets his hands on a harp and plays, all on-screen enemies turn into hammers.

(15) "I puncture you, but I have no knife, I won't drain your blood, just your life."
Answer: Metroid
Franchise: Metroid
How it Works: It's been said that when a Metroid punctures you, it's not draining your blood or precious bodily fluids, but your actual life force.

(16) "Without dessert I'll throw a fit, I sign my name in triplicate."
Answer: King DeDeDe
Franchise: Kirby's Dreamland
How it Works: His last name is a triple repetition of 'De', and he's been known to go into furious rages and to go to great extents for dessert.

(17) "What I throw will make you run, and when it's full of me it's just as fun."
Answer: Donkey Kong
Franchise: Donkey Kong
How it Works: Think of a barrel. Donkey Kong throws them, and the old saying goes, "as fun as a barrel full of monkeys."

(18) "Find me in this tropical place, I'm the guy without a face."
Answer: ShyGuy
Franchise: Yoshi's Island
How it Works: Fairly simple, this refers to the tropical locale of Yoshi's Island, and the fact that most ShyGuys seem to have masks, but no faces.

(19) "I battle ants, roaches, rats and slugs, but I take my orders from the bugs."
Answer: Ness
Franchise: Earthbound/Mother
How it Works: Despite fighting all of these vermin at some point during his quest, Ness is originally given his mission by a friendly bug from the future named Buzz-Buzz.

(20) "Little kids use me to play, who am I? That's hard to say..."
Answer: Geno
Franchise: Super Mario RPG
How it Works: Geno himself is in reality just a wooden toy doll. His real name is unpronounceable (a little hard to say) so he suggests to Mario and friends that they just call him Geno, like the doll.

(21) "My clothes risque, large my nose, make your breakfast from my throws."
Answer: Yoshi
Franchise: Yoshi
How it Works: First of, Yoshi wears only a saddle and boots, which would be quite risque for anyone else to wear. He has a tremendous honker, and the eggs he throws would scramble up nicely into a tasty breakfast.

(22) "You say rob, but that's not right, the other half is set to fight."
Answer: Lucario
Franchise: Pokemon
How it Works: This is possibly one of the trickiest riddles. It's a cryptic, meaning the hints are within the actual phrase. Instead of saying rob, think of steal. Now the next bit says the other half is fight, so what's half steal and half fight? Lucario's type in Pokemon is Steel/Fighting.

(23) "Another may share my title, but I'm no twin, I count eight on next of kin."
Answer: Bowser Jr.
Franchise: Super Mario Bros.
How it Works: Bowser Jr. has a sibling, Morton Jr., who is also a 'Jr.', and typically two Jr.s would imply that they were born at the same time. He's the eighth of Bowser's kids, making him count eight as the next of kin.

(24) "I'm a marvel just like Jack, I use your cohorts when I attack."
Answer: Kirby
Franchise: Kirby
How it Works: This is referencing Marvel Comics artist, Jack Kirby. If you know his full name, you already know the answer to the riddle. The second half of the riddle just nudges towards Kirby a little more.
