Recently, someone by the name of iPodWizard found out how to extract the graphics and fonts from within the iPod firmware. This firmware is contained within those updaters you have porbably download a few times every load of months. After LOADS of responses to this discovery on ipodhacks.com, iPodWizard developed software to allow people to extract graphics themselves. Soon after this, he gave users the ability to edit the graphics. After even more interest, he added the ability for fonts to be edited and after this, even the strings! Now, due to the fantastic iPodWizard program, YOU can edit the pictures you see on the iPod, the fonts that everything is written in, and even what stuff is called! Have fun! -iPod Wizard version history (or at least the stuff that coounts) 1.0.0 --> Allowed users to get iPod graphics on their PC! An amazing development in iPod hacking. 1.0.5 --> Font and graphic editing abilities. 1.0.6 --> Better functionality, strings editing added. 1.0.7 --> Tweaks, fixes and much improved font conversion options. -Guide history 1.0.1 --> The origional guide 1.0.2 --> iString comments update, and troubleshooing started 1.1.0 --> iString and iUpdate removed, the better program iHack has replaced them. An amazing graphic creation tutorial added with kind permission from GregVDS -LEGAL WARNING READ THIS NOW AND DONT COME CRYING! Although, it's hard to muck your iPod up completely, pay attention to the following disclaimer: BY EDITING YOUR iPOD's FIRMWARE, YOU ARE INVALIDATING YOUR iPODs WARRANTY. ANY ACTION THAT YOU TAKE AFTER READING THIS GUIDE IS YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY. THE MAKERS OF THIS GUIDE ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY MISTAKES MADE OR RESULTING PROBLEMS. USE THIS GUIDE AND iPODWIZARD AT YOUR OWN RISK. ======================================= THE SOFTWARE ==================================[SWR] -iPodWizard The latest version of iPod Wizard is V.1.0.7, this includes the following features: -GRAPHICS- load, save and save all bitmap graphics -FONTS- load bitmaps and metrics, save bitmaps and metrics,, creat fonts from installed .ttf fonts -STRINGS- edit strings using hexidecimal letters and numberrs, this basically allows you to edit the words you see in your iPod menu, e.g.'Now Playing' can become 'Now Rocking' The latest version is best downloaded from the iPodWizard CENTRAL SITE, http://www.will-burn.net/viewtopic.php?t=126 At the top of this thread should be the file, all you need is click 'DOWNLOAD' to download this to your computer, then you can extract the files to wherever you want and run them. -iHack iHack is an extremely useful program from N3LDAN. Used when you wish to edit your iPod STRINGS. It allows you can convert standardEnglish into hexidecimal form. This is what needs to be put in a string for the iPod to use it, (see editing strings). iHack has the ability to paste lots of hexidecimal code in to iPodWizard, saving you a lot of tricky (and risky) typing! iHacks second main feature is its ability to edit your SysInfo file with you just doing one click rather than going through multiple folders and risking mistakes. This allows you to choose the 'update' option in your updater. The latest version is currently only found on the iPodWizard CENTRAL SITE, http://www.will-burn.net/viewtopic.php?t=384 THESE TWO PROGRAMS ARE THE ONLY ONES YOU NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY AND EASILY MODIFY YOUR iPOD! ======================================= IPOD'S FIRMWARE ==================================[FWR] -What is firmware? All modern devices have this thing called firmware on them. It is basically a load of stuff that tells your electronic devices how to run properly. For instance, your mobile has firmware. Luckily for us, the iPod has firmware that gets UPDATED and this is a good thing. In order to make changes and tweaks to how our iPods run and connect with our PCs, Apple releases these software updates. The following is a link for the newest iPod updater. http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ When you download of this site, you get a setup program. If you run the setup, it unpacks a .exe file. Normally this is as far as you go. You run this .exe updater and your iPod gets updated. However, we will not immediately run this .exe . This is because IN THE EXE FILE IS THE FIRMWARE there are several different firmware for different iPods. What iPodWizard lets us do is EDIT THE FIRMWARE for our iPod and then save it in the EXE ! Then, when we run the EXE we are running our own specially modified EXE that contains a completely different theme for our iPods. Now you know the basics all you need to know is YOUR iPods firmware. -How to open your firmware 1. Download iPodSetup from Apple.com 2. Run this program 3. Save the files to a place such as program files 4. Now go in to Program Files --> iPod and there should be an executable file called iPod Update 2004-11-15 5. Copy this file to your DESKTOP, it is better to work on a copy so that if things go wrong we have a fresh and clean updater spare 6. Open iPodWizard 7. Click open updater and open the updater on your desktop 8. By Firmware: click on the list and click the firmware relevant to YOUR iPod 9. Click LOAD 10. A status bar should appear and a coming soon graphic should appear in the main screen in the fonts tab -What is the firmware for your iPod? IDR_FIRMWARE-1.1.4 -->iPod 1st or 2nd generation IDR_FIRMWARE-10.3.0.2 -->HP iPod 4th generation (although SOME Apple 4th generations) IDR_FIRMWARE-2.2.2 -->iPod 3rd generation IDR_FIRMWARE-3.2.4 -->iPod mini IDR_FIRMWARE-4.3.0.2 -->iPod 4th generation IDR_FIRMWARE-5.4.0 -->iPod Photo IDR_FIRMWARE-6.2.4 -->HP iPod mini ======================================= USING IPODWIZARD ==================================[IWZ] ----The Basics---- We have already seen how to open your firmware in iPodWizard, it is as follows: -How to open your firmware 1. A status bar should appear and a coming soon graphic should appear in the main screen in the fonts tab iPodWizard is a fairly simple program. At the top are the options for loading your updater and firmware. Below this is a checksum box, this is only some jargon you need not pay ANY attention too. To the side of this is the final WRITE button, which is the end button for saving your changes. The large bottom area is the editing area. There are three tabs: PICTURES, FONTS and STRINGS. Fonts is the default tab. You select the tab you want for the editing you want to do. To the side of the editing are the load, save and possibly make buttons. These will be covered later. To the top of these options are the arrows which allow you to go forward or backwards a picture etc. The following is specific detail for the different editing tabs: -Pictures Index = The picture selected for editing/changing Width + Height = The pixel dimensions of the chosen picture Bit depth = 1 (a black and white picture) or 2 (a fpur-shaded picture) Type= No relevance -Fonts Index = The font selected for editing Name = The font's name! Size = The natural size of the font, and something you will only be able to exceed by a little Bit depth = Always 1 -Strings These are more complicated. the top box = type what you want to change in here e.g. parachute . Click enter and press find next until you find what looks good to change the second box= the strings in English and on one line for each part the third box= the editing box, where the user can change strings by writing in hexidecimal form, (see editing strings) ----Replacing Graphics---- Most of the pictures you ever see on your iPod are stored on the firmware. If we change the pictures on the firmware, then we can change the pictures displayed on your iPod! You can change as many pictures as you want, from the Do Not Disconnect logo to what your battery looks like. Here's how to do it: -Getting your graphics To change your graphics, you are first going to need a replacement graphic. First, open iPodWizard. Now click open updater and choose you updater, (you know where to find it now, see iPods firmware). Now choose your firmware, (as seen earlier also) and click 'Load'. If you have done this correctly, in the main screen will be a 'Coming Soon' picture and the tab will be fonts. Now click 'Save All', to the right of the program window. This will save all the bitmaps to your iPod in a folder you choose. I advise a new folder on your desktop. Look in this folder. You should see various pictures from your iPod! These are what we will change. Choose what you would graphic you would like to change and then do one of the following things: -Get internet graphics There are some VERY good graphics ready to be downloaded on the internet. http://www.will-burn.net/viewforum.php?f=7 On this page you will find a list of themes, click on them and then click DOWNLOAD on the thread that follows. If you open these files you will find a whole load of bitmaps. They will be numbered the same as the ones you have just saved. Look through them, and if you like any remember what and where it is. Now look at "-Loading graphics" -Make your own graphics Ok, Here is a tutorial to produce really good pics for the iPod with Irfanview. You only need maybe a quarter of an hour to master this. The tutorial is dedicated to everybody, since the software needed is really simple, free, and available on the web at this address: www.irfanview.com The soft is very small, installs very easily and quickly, and is very easy to handle and understand. So, you don't have time or patience to learn complex soft like photoshop, or you don't have the bucks to acquire it? No problem, no knowledge needed, no infographic specific skills required, here we go. At the end, evbody will be able to do the best animations and pics ever seen! . A foreword: I give here mainly the keyboard shortcuts for the different steps, as this is the quickest way to explain, and to work. If you are lost, do it slowly, and see which menu is selected, and what option is choosen. But once you'll have the habit, this is sooo easy you'll not stop using it. First, go and download the app, install it! (You know how to do, right? ) I suppose you know where is the mouse, the keyboard, and also you have a pic to work on. Let's take something common, some portrait or landscape format pic, sizing around 600x800, for the purpose, but everything else will work flawlessly either. Open irfanview, and go and open your pic. I will not enter in trivial details though, I suppose you know the "menu File, Open" stuff. evbody ready? Here we go: 1. A good Cropping needed! The part you want on your ipod final pic need to be extracted from the picture. Here we need to select precisely something with the same proportion the final pic will have. Let's say, for a "Do not / Ok to" pic, you need a square selection, for the big charging animation, you need something a multiple of 40x92 (80x184, 280x644, 360x828, compute it) or 92x40 if you want, the anim will simply be rotated 90°. tip: I prefer to stick to simple multiples, but you can compute intermediate size if you want a very precise zone, but always respect the proportion of your final pic. You could crop everything you want, but then you will need to paste the result into a pic with correct dimensions (into Paint, to stick to the simple philosophy of this tutorial see at the end), the process leading you to smaller seen pic, loosing a lot of final quality. Go, click somewhere and drag, unclick. Ok, The numbers written in the title bar of the irfanview window are the actual zoomed size of the pic (uninteresting for us here), then, the upper left corner coordinates, and the size of the selection. If it's not precisely correct, you can edit it by Alt+e, u, where you can enter the upper left corner coord, and the size of the box. Once the correct extension is achieved, you crop with Ctrl+y. tip: Don't click into the selection, or Irfanview will simply zoom in, loosing your selection box. Ok, Ctrl+h to come back to original size, + - to adjust zoom to fit your screen. tip2: Don't use your arrows, you will jump to the next pic in your current folder, and loose the job. Ok, simply arrow left, and begin again. tip3: The borders of the box can be scrolled when the mouse become a double sided arrow. tip4: The selection box can be globally moved by right clicking in it (but not left click, see above). tip5: For dummies: You can achieve zoom-in effect by cropping less and less in your entire sequence animation. 2. A good result needs the broadest luminance signal! Enhance colors We now need to stretch the colors, in order to achieve real dark (black) and real clear (white) areas, so adjusting the colors: Alt+i, c. Usually, I push the contrast around 50 and play with the lightning to correct the result. Some tuning is needed for each pic is different. Tip: Pay attention that producing a sequence (the ten pics of the large charging animation) requires the pics stay quite similar, so apply the same color treatment to each pic. 3. You too, become four-eyed : Resampling to final size Here we go: Ctrl+r. Enter your final size (64x64, 40x92 or 92x40, you name it), paying attention to have the "Preserve aspect ratio" selected and the Size Method to "Resample with Lanczos Filter" (fascinating name, isn't it?). If you cannot achieve the final size with the "Preserve aspect ratio", you cropped a wrong proportion, come back to 1. (There is just one undo, so, go quietly, you will do this very well quickly!). Here you have in color a quicklook of the final result. tip: Sometimes, entering 40 gives automatically 91, enter then 92, but check 40 stays 40. 4. We don't like to wear glasses: Sharpening a little bit to enhance limits visibility I find results better displayed with some sharpening, but you can disagree, just try, you can undo (but just once, remember?): Shift+s. (iPod photo modders, stop here and save for color results). 5. Fade to Gray: Color to grayscale We of course need to reduce color to grayscale: Alt+i, g. If the pic is too soft, you can work it by again recontrast and lighten or darken it, though it is better to do this before downscaling spatially and spectrally (size and color), hence the importance to enhance at former step correctly. 6. 256 becomes 4: There is a noise in my iPod! Usually, passing directly a grayscale to the ipod is not pleasing, for the gray tones are simply shrinked into the 4 levels the iPod support. there is a way to mimic more tones by noise diffusion (dark gray points into black, black points into dark gray, and so on to pure white). Beautiful, Irfanview does this also (A wonderful tool, I told you!): Alt+i, d, c. Enter 4, and be sure to select "Use Floyd-Steinberg dithering" (the noise diffusion stuff. Again, fascinating! Hail to the nerds who invented the algorithm). If you have a curious mind, you can try without the option and see how ipodwizard would translate directly your grayscale (maybe a future option into ipodwizard? ) ||EDIT||Actually, this is not noise, this is rather error diffusion, or dithering, for more details: http://www.visgraf.impa.br/Courses/ip00/proj/Dithering1/floyd_steinberg_dithering.html ||EDIT|| 7. 4 is not 4: Editing the gray palette. There is just a last tricky step: the dark gray and light gray given by windows apps are practically never the two grays the iPod uses, and if we give the pic now to ipodwizard, there is great probability your dark gray will become black, or your light gray become white, loosing precious info. So we have to edit the palette (there is also a possibility your black is not actually black, nor your white white). So Alt+i, e, choose edit palette. The four first gray squares are our target, double click each, modifying to replace the darkest by black (0 0 0), the dark gray by 80 80 80, the light gray by 160 160 160, and the lightest by white (255 255 255). tip: Again, Alt+i, e, x, but now, export palette. So you can just Alt+i, e, m and import palette for the next pic. ||EDIT|| I just saw that sometimes, the sequence of gray is not the usual one (darkest, light gray, dark gray, lightest). In such a case, importing will exchange dark gray by light gray, so Alt+i, e, e first to check it is compatible with your saved palette. You can also save two palette, applying the good one. Name them BDLW.pal and BLDW.pal to disciminate them. ||EDIT|| tip2: The windows color management window is really badly done, be sure you "Add to personal colors", and select the newly added gray, after modifying the RGB values. 8. A last look Ctrl+h to see it actual size, if you are pleased with the result, Ctrl+s, save as .bmp, and the rest you know well: import into ipodwizard, and Voilą! I hope everybody is still reading. I hope I have been clear enough for the ones that don't have the slightest experience in this. I hope also more advanced imodders have discovered a more simple alternative to their usual process. "A" final word(s) Irfanview has a lot more options: -just try t, and you will have a second app, more like ACDssee, letting you browse your pics by thumbnails. -Try also Ctrl+w, and you have a full screen slideshow of eeverything in the actual folder. -w simply gives you another interface to build encapsulatedd slideshow (exe). -Alt+o, e to extract all the frames of an animated gif (as I did recently for the "pushing titts big charging animation" one can find in the Graphics forum). -Alt+f, b let you batch convert or rename a bunch of files very easily. I assemble the pics for the animation with MS Paint (No knowledge philosophy, again), making a blank pic the right size, and Ctrl+c - Ctrl+v from Irfanview. Again here, Paint has some nice quite "menu hidden" features, like Menu Display, Zoom, Display Grid, Display thumbnail. Very handy to quickly assemble precisely your pics while seeing the result. -Loading Graphics By now you should have some graphics you would like to change. By 'Index' in iPod wizard, choose the graphic you want to change from the list. You should see the normal picture in the main screen. Now click 'Load Bitmap'. Find your different graphic and click 'Open'. If everything has gone correctly you should see your NEW graphic in the main screen. Repeat this method for any graphics which you wish to change! NOTE: If you want to load a WHOLE THEME, then instead of clicking 'Load bitmap' CLICK 'LOAD ALL' and choose the theme folder. Make sure the pictures are called the same as the origionals, (e.g. pic055) and te whole set of graphics will be loaded to your firmware. -Writing the firmware Once you have finished editing the graphics, click WRITE in the top-right corner. Click YES at the warning screen, and "Updater modified successfully!" will appear if all has gone well. -Graphics indicies The following list is what every picture is on your iPod. If there is a star next to the indicie, then the picture has so far not been found on the iPod, so there is no need to change it. pic000 * pic001 * pic002 * pic003 * pic004 The 'Apple' graphic at the top of the legal section pic005 The 'Padlock' graphic for the hold symbol pic006 The graphic for repeat all pic007 The graphic for repeat one pic008 * pic009 The graphic for when EQ is turned on pic010 The graphic for shuffle songs pic011 The first menu arrow pic012 The secondary menu arrow pic013 * pic014 The 'star rating' graphic pic015 The symbol for a part not star rated pic016 The 'Pixo' graphic in the legal section pic017 The audible graphic in the legal section pic018 The low volume graphic pic019 The high volume graphic pic020 * pic021 * pic022 The colon : in the clock pic023 The 0 in the clock pic024 The 1 in the clock pic025 The 2 in the clock pic026 The 3 in the clock pic027 The 4 in the clock pic028 The 5 in the clock pic029 The 6 in the clock pic030 The 7 in the clock pic031 The 8 in the clock pic032 The 9 in the clock pic033 Small short charging battery sequence pic034 Small long charging battery sequence pic035 Charged battery graphic pic036 16/16 battery pic037 1/16 battery pic038 2/16 battery pic039 3/16 battery pic040 4/16 battery pic041 5/16 battery pic042 6/16 battery pic043 7/16 battery pic044 8/16 battery pic045 9/16 battery pic046 10/16 battery pic047 11/16 battery pic048 12/16 battery pic049 13/16 battery pic050 14/16 battery pic051 15/16 battery pic052 16/16 battery pic053 Large short battery charging sequence, (iPod sleeping) pic054 Large long battery charging sequence, (iPod sleeping) pic055 Large battery charged graphic (iPod sleeping) pic056 clock graphic pic057 status bar dot graphic pic058 * pic059 * pic060 * pic061 * pic062 Alarm set graphic pic063 Paused graphic pic064 Playing graphic pic065 * pic066 Connection graphic pic067 Do not disconnect graphic pic068 OK to disconnect graphic pic069 Exchanging/Receiving data sequence pic070 small volume low pic071 small volume high pic072 * pic073 * pic074 * pic075 * pic076 * pic077 iPod square pic078 Alarm ringing graphic pic079 Solitaire heart pic080 Solitaire diamond pic081 Solitaire club pic082 Solitaire spade pic083 Solitaire hand pic084 * pic085 Parachute turret base pic086 Helicopter left 1 pic087 Helicopter left 2 pic088 Helicopter right 1 pic089 Helicopter right 2 pic090 Parachute falling man pic091 Parachute falling man with parachute pic092 Parachute man floating with parachute pic093 World Map not found displayed anywhere, rumoured in time zone menu? ----Editing Strings---- To start, open iPodWizard, load your firmware and click the 'Stings' tab. What you see should look VERY daunting at first. Basically, we can edit strings to change what everything is called on your iPod. This means you can edit what anything is called, such as 'Now Playing' or 'iPod' at the top of your iPod! Let's get used to the strings tab first though. The short, wide top box: This is a find box, for finding the string you want to edit. The box below this: Is what the strings look like in English, (how they will appear to be called on your iPod), not that if you edit a string it will not change in this box until you reload. The box below this: The actual box for editing your strings. -What is a string? A string is a whole list of numbers and letters in one long long long list, that the iPod reads and shows up as English text on the iPod screen. If we edit some of these letters and mubers, we can edit the text our iPods shown. -Using iString Unfortunately, although we hope it will happen in future iPodWizard releases, you cannot just type English in the top box to edit a string. You have to edit a string in what is known as hexidecimal. This is a programmers way of writing stuff, for instance, if '44' is written, it is a 'D' in English language. I am going to show you how to change the string 'Now Playing' to 'Now Rocking', then you can use this method for any strings you wish to edit in the future. 1. In the top box, write 'Now PLaying' and click Find, although this time iPodWizard finds the string instantly, sometimes it will not find what you were looking for and you will have to click Find Next until you find the correct string. 2. At the top of the second box, Now Playing should be shown, (in this case with Artists below it) 3. Click Now Playing in the second box, this should cause 4 to be highlighted in the thrid box, as well as the N of Now Playing. 4. You are now at the beginning of the Now Playing string 5. Open iString and take a break from your steps to read the following information: -What is iHack and your first important rule iHack is a simple program that allows you to convert English to hexidecimal as one of its functions. This hexidecimal can then be transfered to the string in iPodWizard to cause it to change. Here comes a very important rule: THERE MUST BE A PAIR OF HEXIDECIMAL 00s on EACH SIDE OF YOUR STRING, THAT IS TO SAY, IF WE LOOK AT THE Now Playing STRING WE SEE THIS: 00 4E 6F 77 20 50 6C 61 79 69 6E 67 00 .Now Playing. WE CANNOT CHANGE THIS TO 00 4E 6F 77 20 50 6C 61 79 69 6E 67 21 .Now Playing! as we have removed the 00 at the end of the now playing string and THIS IS NOW ALLOWED, However, if we look at the music string for instance, we see this 00 4D 75 73 69 63 00 00 00 .Music... WE CAN CAN CAN CAN CAN CHANGE THIS STRING AND ADD SOME TEXT TO IT FOR EXAMPLE 00 4D 75 73 69 63 21 21 00 .Music!!. IS ALLOWED BECAUSE THERE ARE STILL TWO 00s ON EACH SIDE OF THE STRING 00 4D 75 73 69 63 21 21 21 .Music!!! IS NOT ALLOWED AS WE HAVE REMOVED ONE OF THE 00 pairs from the side, GOT THAT? IF IN DOUBT READ THAT AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND NOTE: although 00 shows up as a dot --> . it is actually a 'nothing' character and does not show up, the hexidecimal 2E is a full stop -Using iHack continued We currently have the beginning of the string selected. Bearing in mind the above rule, you are only allowed to edit 10 'letters' as such, because you need the two 00s on each side. So: 6. Bear in mind your character limit and DON'T exceed it. 7. In the Input: box, enter your new text for the string, (Now Rocking in this case) 8. In the Output: box should now be a series of letters and numbers 9. Make sure you have the beginning of the string selected in iPodWizard and click SEND TO ACTIVE WINDOW on iHack 10. Click iPodWizard so it is your main screen and wait a few seconds. A noise should sound and your new string should be pasted in to iPodWizard, and the numbers and letters should change, as well as the text on the right side. WELL DONE! IF THIS HAS HAPPENED, CHECK YOU HAVE TWO 00s TO EACH SIDE OF THE STRING AND WRITE YOUR NEW FIRMWARE. Repeat this method for any more strings you wish to edit. -MORE RULES READ THESE 1. REMEMBER THE 00 rule of above 2. REMEMBER THE 00 rule of above 3. Only edit strings that you know are text on the iPod, don't edit something that you can't see and don't know what it is about 4. Only edit the first single iPod string, the one ABOVE THE CANCEL STRING, DO NOT EDIT ANY OTHER iPod STRINGS! 5. TAKE NOT YOU CAN EDIT ALL THE TEXT IN THE LEGAL SECTION :) :) ;) 6. Strings are a difficult thing, if you don't think you've done it write, do not write to the firmware, take your time, go slowly and write at regularl intervals if you are doing well ----Replacing Fonts---- First we need to find the font we want to change. By now you should know how to open your updater and load your firmware. Do this and click on the FONTS tab. Now you need to click the main font for your iPod. These are as follows: 2nd Generation: Font 3rd Generation: Font 4th Generation: Font 28 Mini: Font 31? iPod photo: Font Now you have the font to change there are two options as follows: -Load a bitmap and its metrics These are other fonts people have made, please note that if you choose to load a bitmap font you HAVE TO HAVE A .ifm METRICS FILE! Otherwise you cannot import a bitmap font. A bitmap font is a long and tiny picture of every single character in the font. Some can be found with metrics here: http://www.will-burn.net/viewforum.php?f=5 Once you have a .bmp font file and its accompanying .ifm then you can load the font. Click 'load bitmap' at the right side of the iPodWizard program. Now open the .bmp file of you're chose font. The main screen should change but not look correct. Now click 'load metrics' on the right hand side too, and open the metrics file for the bitmap. NOW you should see all the characters looking correctly and being where they should. -Create a brand new font This is the best way to make ANY font that you want. You can choose from any fonts you've installed but lets say that we want to pick a brand new one. Go to any of the following sites: http://www.will-burn.net/viewforum.php?f=5 http://www.dafont.com http://www.1001fonts.com or anywhere else on the net, just do a Google search http://www.google.com for fonts! and pick a font you like. Download it to your desktop. On your desktop it should appear as suchandsuchafont.ttf but this is no use to us YET. Now open up the control panel and double click on fonts. You should see a folder full of loads of .ttf files. Drag the new .ttf file here and it should be installed automatically. Now go to iPodWizard and click 'Make Font' in the right side. A font box should appear, similar to when you use word. Choose you're font, choose you're style, choose your size. TIP: Don't go to bold, don't go to big. For example, Times New Roman, Regular, 12. Now click OK. You're new font should appear in the main screen! If you like you're new font and want to share it with others, click save bitmap and save the bitmap of you're font, then click save metrics and save the metrics of you're font. Now you can share you're font with other iPodWizard users. Don't forget to click 'WRITE' and save the firmware for updating. -The SysInfo file When you open your modified dater, you will probably not have the UPDATE option, because you have already updated your iPod before. The RESTORE option will be available, but we don't wnat to use this, as it would meen reloading all our music again. What we have to do is trick our iPod into believing we need to update. To do this, we need to find our SysInfo file, a file stored ON our iPods: 1. Plug your iPod into your computer 2. Open iTunes 3. Open iPod Settings 4. Enable iPod for DISK MODE 5. Open My Computer and you should see your iPod like a hard drive 7. Open your iPod drive 8. Click Tools --> Folder Options --> View --> VIEW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS 9. Open the faint folder iPod_control 10. Open the faint folder device 11. Open sysInfo with the program wordpad You should see some stuff, but most importantly, something like this: buildID: 0x03028000 (3.0.2) visibleBuildID: 0x03028000 (3.0.2) The above are what a 4th generation iPod SysInfo file will show. You can manually change this here, but it is risky so DON't!!!!. Instead: 12. Open iHack again, YES IT HAS MORE FUNCTIONS 13. On the left hand side click your iPod generation 14. Select the drive letter of your iPod from the drop-down list, e.g. H:/ 15. As soon as you select your iPod drive letter, a box should appear telling you your iPod has been successfully patched Now if you were to look in your SysInfo file it will have changed to something like this, (you don't need to look at your SysInfo, only if your curious): buildID: 0x03018000 (3.0.1) visibleBuildID: 0x03018000 (3.0.1) This will make the updater think you have an old version of the iPod firmware and will say you need an update. 17. Open your iPod Updater 18. Click Update 19. Plug iPod into mains power supply 20. iPod should restart with your new graphics, fonts and strings!!!!!!!! -More iHack!!!! If you open up iHack there is still more things you can do. They aren't related to iPodWizard, but they are fun. Click More Hacks You will see the following list of options, which do as they say by them: Voltage Hack CPU usage bar Force Deep Sleep Disable Cache These are just fun little tweaks if you feel like doing something special. The voltage hack is probably the most popular among people. ======================================= TROUBLESHOOTING ==================================[TRB] -----It's time to shoot those troubles....---- -I mucked up, I'm going to kill you!
