Groups?  We Don't Need No Stinkin' Groups!
One of the defining points of this class, due to the understanding of pet classes in general and  the reputation of the similar looking Necromancer from EQ, we have aquired, as Cabalists, the title of solo-class.
While we can hold our own to solo monsters, the thuergist is far, far better at this task.  Many Cabalists only get to level 20, and assume they know the world about the class.  Quite frankly, the game changes drastically at 20, again at 30, and even more so at 40.  Getting to 20 and saying you know the rest of the game is simple ignorance.  I won't talk about the level 50 game, as I have not achieved it.  Any 50 Cabalists are welcome to contact me about their experiences.  Up until 20, soloing anything, yellow orange and red is pretty easy.  Nothing is a challenge, and if it is, your pet is taking the guff so you could easily run off.  After 20, it becomes harder to solo.  Orange and yellows are your game, reds are rarely worth taking.  At 30, reds become impossible, oranges become hard to do, but doable, and yellow becomes your general fight.  It continues on like that.  At 40, you could solo, but it is strongly advised against.  The places you can solo are generally extremely dangerous, so you have to set about the hard task of finding a group.  I've spent a lot of hours soloing and I find it extremely boring.

Soloing all the way until 50 is not impossible.  It will take you a lot of time, a lot of careful planning, and a properly solo specced cabalist.  Finding a group is exceptionally hard, however.  As I have stated, we are generally not wanted in groups.  Therefor we can spend hours in high traffic areas trying to fall into a group.  The other problem with soloing with the Cabalist is the XP your pet takes from you during your solo experience.

However, if you do not mind the solitary road, enjoy being alone, and spending hours fighting on the treadmill alone, this will be a viable option for you.  You will be able to get equipment easily, running around soloing in places groups of lower level then you frequent, and so forth.

The main issue people face when looking at the schematics of the characters is which class would be best, Cabalist or Theurgist.  Two "pet" classes, both awesome in their own rite, but exceptionally different.  Theurgist is by far more group friendly with pulsing blade turn, speed song, buffs along with crowd control.  Cabalists have the ability to fill any niche in a group that might be missing.  This is not something people notice right away, as it is very subtle for the class and most people out of their ignorance play Cabalists wrong anyway.

Heck, I'm still learning to play my character.  I learn new things almost every day playing.  Keep an open mind with this cabalists, and around other cabalists, and you will overcome many of the problems we are faced with.

Still, my biggest problems is finding groups when noone from my alliance is on =)
