| Exploitation- noun 1 a situation in which someone treats someone else unfairly in order to earn money or gain an advantage: � The company was fined for the exploitation of its immigrant workers. 2 a process in which something such as materials or skills are used effectively or completely in order to gain an advantage or profit: � They are working to control the exploitation of the rain forests. Nationalism- noun 1 the desire by a group of people of the same race, origin, language etc. to form an independent country: � Irish nationalism 2 the belief that your own country is better than any other country: � Europe can only live in peace if nationalism is overcome. Imperialism- noun 1 a political system in which one country rules a lot of other countries 2 the desire of one country to rule or control other countries 3 DISAPPROVING methods by which a rich or powerful country can influence poorer countries or get political or trade advantages over them: � Small nations resent Western cultural imperialism. Genocide- noun the deliberate murder of a whole group or race of people: � Several of the military leaders have been accused of genocide. Acculturation- from verb Acculturate- verb to become part of the society of a new country or area and learn to behave in a way that is appropriate there [+ into]: � Younger people tend to acculturate into new surroundings more rapidly than older people. Segregation- noun the practice of keeping people of different races or religions apart and making them live, work, or study separately: � Racial segregation was outlawed by the Supreme Court in 1954 Pluralistic Society- noun a society where people of different races, religions, and political beliefs can live together peacefully Colonization- from verb Colonize- verb to establish political control over an area or over another country, and send your citizens there to settle Colony- noun plural: colonies a country or area that is ruled by a more powerful country, usually one that is far away: � Fighting is continuing in the former Belgian colony Protectorate- noun a country that is protected and controlled by a more powerful country, especially in the areas of defense and foreign affairs |
