Vocabulary for Unit 1
Literacy- noun: The state of being able to read and write:
     � The program is designed to promote literacy in the community.

GDP (Gross Domestic Product)- noun TECHNICAL:  The GDP; the total value of all the goods and services produced in a country, except for income received from abroad:

Economy
-noun plural: economies:  The system by which a country's money and goods are produced and used, or a country considered in this way:
     � Low interest rates will help the economy.
     � a capitalist economy

Industry -noun plural: industries:  1  the production of goods, especially in factories:
     � The chemicals are widely used in industry as refrigerants.
     � The government encourages the development of industry with tax breaks.
2  a particular type of trade or service:
     � the airline industry
     � Miami's tourist industry

Agriculture - noun:  The practice or science of farming

Terrain - noun:  A particular type of land:
     � rocky terrain

Resource- noun:  1 something such as land, minerals, or natural energy that exists in a country and can be used to increase its wealth:
     � Canada's vast mineral resources
     � a country rich in natural resources
2 something that is available to be used when needed:
     � The police used every available resource to track down the killer.
3 something such as a book, movie, or picture that provides information:
     � important educational resources
     � a valuable new computer resource
     � resource room/center etc. (= a room, building etc. where resources are kept)
4 resources [plural]
a) all the money, property, skills etc. that you have available:
     � We need to devote more time and resources to the important projects.
     � Some students are without adequate financial resources to attend college.
     � pool your resources (= put together all the resources that each of you can provide)
b) personal qualities, such as courage and a determination, that you need to deal with a difficult situation:
     � Jan relied on her inner resources to get her through that tough time

Natural Resources- noun:  Something  that occurs in nature and has value, such as land, a mineral like gold or iron, natural energy  like natural gas etc. that exists in a country:
     � Water power is our country's most important natural resource.
     � Cambodia is very rich in natural resources.

Human Resources- noun:  1 the department in a company that deals with employing, training, and helping people; PERSONNEL  2 [plural] the abilities and skills of people

Other Resources besides Natural and Human Resources include: Monetary Resources- the amount of hard money (cash, gold, silver, platinum, etc.) that is available; Technological Resources- the technology that is available.
