US History Unit 5 Vocabulary
Immigration- n.  the process of entering another country in order to live there
� A rise in immigration to the United States has made some communities grow faster than expected.

Immigrant- n.  someone who enters another country to live there
� The Chinese immigrant to our community opened a Chinese restaurant.

Gild
- v. (gilded)  to cover the surface of something with a thin layer of gold or gold paint
� The Gilded Age in American history described a time when the population seemed rich, but was actually poor, like a tin watch that has been covered with a little gold.

Receiving Stations
- n.  Large complexes like the buildings at Ellis Island where immigrants were processed, evaluated and cared for before being allowed to enter the USA
�  Svetomira and her family were forced to stay at the Ellis Island Receiving Station for three weeks while her father raised the money to bring them into the US.

Ethnic- adj.  (ethnicity- n.)  relating to a particular race, nation, tribe, etc.
� Bosnia has three main ethnic groups.

Contribution- n.  something that is given or done to help something else be successful
� The Mayo Clinic has made  important contributions to  cancer research.

Culture-  the art, beliefs, behavior, ideas, etc. of a particular society
� The culture of ancient Greece includes beautiful poetry and music.
