US History Unit 4 Vocabulary
Industry- n. the production of goods, especially in factories.
The country's economy is supported by industry.

Industrial- adj.  relating to factories or the people working in factories.
Industrial production is up in India where more factories are being built every day.

Industrialize- v. (also: Industrialization) to develop a lot of industry/factories.
After the Civil War, the South needed to Industrialize and build factories of its own.

Revolution- n. a complete change in ways of thinking, methods of working, etc.:
Computer technology has caused a revolution in business practices.

Laissez-Faire- n. the practice that the government should not control or interfere with businesses or the economy at all.
The laissez-faire policies of the American Government during the Gilded Age let big business do whatever it wanted.

Monopoly- n. 1.  the control of all or most of a business activity (like selling sugar, running a railroad, etc), or the company that has this control:  2.   to have a monopoly on something is to have complete control or possession of something, so that other people cannot have it:
The train company has a monopoly on services to New Jersey.

Tenement- n.  a large building divided into apartments, especially in a poor area of a city.
The tenement in the worst part of the city burned down leaving 12 families homeless.
