Introduction

I was appointed by the Worshipful Master in September of 1982 to compile the history of our Lodge. It has been a rewarding experience, though at times very frustrating. The old minutes and records were kept in longhand, and the Secretarys, understandably, would be brief to the point of exasperation. For example, at the communication of 15 April, 1875, some discussion was held whether to surrender our charter. There are no explanations given. On 20 May, 1875, included in the minutes was the terse comment Ionic Lodge concluded not to give up her Charter. At times, I could read between the lines, but these presumptions have no place in a history, and any additions of mine will be so noted.

As will become evident, I am not a scholar. I must ask your indulgence for my mistakes in composition, grammar and punctuation. However, all quotes from minutes and records are verbatim, therefore being somewhat dated.

I am pleased with the final draft of this history, it is to the best of my ability, and I trust the Brethren will enjoy it.
