Well I was actually considering buying a licence for Invision board
the what used to be a free forum software package until the folks at
Invision power started banging the till. |

Surely Not! what even the school children aswell? At least give them something
for their pocket money! Show some compassion please after all if Invision 1.3 Final is anything to go by the code will be worthless in 2 to 3 years time! |

| Well praise the lord ! Charles "IPS management no less" replies to someone else with the same worries, Look don't laugh at his grammar mine ain't too hot either, But hang on a minute Debbie was the customer SERVICES MANAGER!!! OH this is all so confusing. I must post a reply straight away. Thankyou your post will be scrutinized before publication, YE GADS! they are censoring posts on the fly! |
| Well yep you guessed, it was not published ...... Ok, basically I asked them what's
what, because I was a potential customer in the making, but having trawled the Invision customer
support forum I was going to wait until their Xmas sales were on, when hopefully, they would all
be reading from the same beer mat. You know there is a saying that a barber doesn't cut his own hair, you would think as they actually develop/code forums they would get there act together and use that simple little mod, you know Invision it's called a "STICKY" very useful for when people ask the same question, only it gives you the chance to get your story straight. ( I'm presuming it worked ok, yes it did I tried it ;-).) On a final note and this is to all the wannabe webmasters. You can have the best, most expensive forum software going, but it doesn't mean people will automatically come in their droves to join your forum. The Net is littered with forum skeletons with single posts dating back 2 years or so. Why even Forum hosting companies have buckled under. There is a magical ingrediant that makes or break a BB, and without it you will never make it, don't ask me what it is, it's like a bar, it's packed but it's just the same as the empty bar next door, but for some reason poeple all squeeze into that one, it's something that would be worth a fortune if you could put it in a box and market it, but you can't because it's an unknown substance, just like pixie dust. So my advice is do not pay anything, especially when you read the chaos which appears to be overwhelming Invision. Go for a good free board, Phpbb is the next best, but it's so, so close it does not matter and cetainly not worth the $$s.and the licencing worries and complying with Invisions usage policy. There are plenty of hacks for phpbb, and this is a fact believe me, phpbb is a lot easier to change and build skins for, in fact there are so many created by the community you will not have to build one, unless it's for knowledge, which is a good reason to do so. If you want anymore choices for forum software just search google there are numerous ones out there. BUT FOR HEAVENS SAKE KEEP YOUR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET! At least until you have tested the water with a free Forum. Good Idea Use some of the money you would of wasted towards some cheap hosting, it's out there, free hosting is an exception to the rule, it aint worth it if you want a reliable php mysql package. I noticed phpbb do one, so take a look Good Luck |
