What's new at IOCUB!

OPERATION: PORTOBELO, PANAMA

IOCUB is pleased to announce that we are currently underway with the development of our first internationally accredited high school in Portobelo, Panama. The school will be a small, private high school for the children in Portobelo. This rural town subsists primarily on tourism and has never had an established high school, so this is a grand achievement for the people of Portobelo, as well as for the workers of IOCUB. Currently in Portobelo, a child who wants to go to high school, has to catch a commercial bus at four oclock in the morning and endure a grueling four-and-a half hour ride out to another town. They cant return until late in the evening, which makes it difficult to do any homework. It takes great determination for a youngster to overcome the formidable obstacles that cause most students to stop at seventh grade. With the opening of our school the children will be able to attend classes in their own town and finally have a realistic chance to go to college. We at IOCUB are very excited about this project.

OPERATION: WIZ KIDS

IOCUB is working with the children of Cabrini Green (a Chicago, IL slum) under the auspices of CYCLE (Community Youth Creative Learning Experience) in an after school program, on a very exciting, very important project. IOCUB has provided the children with cameras and film to document their environment in a photographic essay called, MY WORLD. Over the course of several months, the children use the cameras to tell the raw, unedited stories of their unique lives characterized by the beauty; the fear; the anger; the happiness; and tragedy of their everyday experiences. These Wiz Kids have seen it all and are showing it to us through their powerful photographs and inspiring words. Eventually, the collection of photos will be put together into a book that will be published and internationally distributed. The children of Portobelo will work on a similar project through a cross-cultural network with the Wiz Kids, as well as a variety of other projects.
