July Word From the Prez
Okay, folks. So the events calendar is basically empty for the month of July. In June we said we were all laying low because of the rainy season. Now we can blame the lethargy on the stifling heat that is unavoidable. Wait! Hold on just a minute, it IS avoidable.
Many IOC members are using the tactic of buying an airplane ticket and literally escaping to some exotic foreign land for a bit of adventure, relief and reconnecting with family and friends. For those of you staying in Kansai, July events will only happen if you take the initiative. It seems that the IOC has taken a turn in the way events are being organized and happening. People who come to the monthly meetings are networking, finding companions among themselves and putting activities together on the spot. Weekends are full of cycling, rowing practices for the coming Tenjin Matsuri and camping get-aways.
To beat the coming heat, consider finding a very nearby river or stream, taking a bit of picnic lunch and as many friends as you like and hiking just enough to enjoy the cool mountain shade and waters. Several IOC members had a great time last summer doing just that, walking only 15 minutes from the JRSagano station to Kiyotaki in Kyoto. We swam to our hearts' delight and then leisurely hiked to Arashiyama. It was a simple yet super break from the heat. Of course do pay attention to the weather conditions as flash floods take their toll on ignorant mountain users each summer, but with a bit of precaution you can have a great time.
Please note, too, that the August meeting will have a change of venue. It will take place at the Shin Hankyu Hotel beer garden, starting at 7:00pm. You will need to make a commitment to attend beforehand to Moa. Details to be announced soon. Stay tuned, get involved and enjoy all that summer in Kansai has to offer. After having said all this, I will be away in Mongolia until August 10.
Best regards, - Jacquelyn
