Zim is sent to Earth by his leaders the "Tallest Ones."  They say they have sent him to take over the Earth, but they really just expect him to die.  He is given a robot sidekick named Gir.  They get setnt to earth and Zim sets up his base, with fake parents and everything.  He sends himself to school to learn more about the humans.  He meets Dib, a boy in his class who knows all about Zim and his so-called Invasion, and is set upon stopping Zim.  Unfortunately, no one believes Dib, so he is on his own.  It ends with him contacting his home planet and telling them he is safe and the mission has started.  They don't really care.
The other students at school are making fun of Zim because he has no friends.  Zim decides to find a bet friend because he fears he will be detected if he is abnornal.  He puts three kids through tests to find out which would be the best friend for him, and eventually chooses Geez.  After he establishes that he has a friend, he tries to discard Geez. But Geez wont go away.  He gives Zim presents, and tries to throw him a surprise party until Zim just gets fed up and hypnotizes him to think he is a squirrel.
Zim and Dib get put into a video game, and they fight each other.  The game is being played by Gaz, Dib's younger sister. It becomes very obvious in this episode that Gaz does not think much of her older brother.  In the end, Zim remains trapped in the video game and Dib gets out.  He gloats and says "Now for my finishing move."  He heads for the bathroom.  A flushing sound is heard.
Zim has to attend parent-teacher night, but his robotic parents lack the necessary social skills they would need in order to speak with teachers, and just be normal.  SO Zim sets them up in the lab to get fixed into having social skills and leaves GIR to oversee.  GIR immediately changes the screen to his favorite TV shows.  The parents are not greatly improved but Zim brings them anyway.  The parents are weird, but no one seems to notice, so it is all good in the end.
Zim upgrades GIR's guidance chip, and then GIR gets them lost in a nearby city while Zim is testing it, because GIR replaced the chip with a cupcake.  Everything goes all haywire, and the SWAT team comes after them.  GIR cannot fly them to safety, or even home because he has replaced his jet fuel with tuna.  Think GIR likes to eat sweet things and just lots of food in general??
Zim becomes obsessed with germs.  He is scared of them and becomes determined to find a way to be immune from germs.  He has goggles that show him exactly where germs are, but as soon as he scrubs them away, they return.  He later discovers a non-germ meat made by NASA, and in the next scene you see him dripping with meat.
