Starting Your Own Site

Starting your own site...
Want to start your own site? Well, I'm here to give you tips and tricks on choosing your host, and making your site more popular. Can't afford to pay $30 every month just to keep your site up? No problem!

Hosting

FreeWebs- Offers 100MB of space, and no ads whatsoever. But, however, no host is willing to give out 100MB without limiting some stuff right? Well, folks, the fact is that... you can't upload more than 50 files, so I would suggest you use this for hosting.

GeoCities- Offers 15MB of space, unlimited amount of files, and step-by-step-do-it-yourself pagebuilders. This is ad-supported. But, you can close the ads. However, there is a hourly bandwidth limit. I do not know exactly HOW much, but I would guess that it's not a lot.

Uploading

AngelFire- Offers 20MB of space, and ad-supported. You cannot close the ads. I would suggest using this to upload.

Tripod- Offers 20MB of space, 1GB of transfer per month, and ad-supported. Good for small un-popular sites because there is also an hourly bandwidth limit. I would NOT suggest using this one.

URL Re-Directing

Bravenet- Sign up and you can enjoy many interactives, such as page counters, a message forum, a guestbook, and e-mail forms- all FREE. There is also a very cool re-directing service, which turns a long URL into a short one- ex: http://clix.to/yourname I would definatley suggest this one, because free hosts often/always have long URL's. Use the URL re-directing service! I promise you won't regret it!

Image Format- According to my general upload experience,(which is not much) I would suggest .JPEG or .jpg format. It loads faster so visitors wont get annoyed. However, .jpg or .JPEG formats are at a much poorer quality than .bmp images. .bmp formated images are bigger and takes longer to load. Choose whichever format you want. I have given my bit of advice. .gif formats are for animations or moving images and will support transparency. Though it is not as big as .bmp formats, it is larger than .jpg formats. But they're at a pretty good quality.

More Popular- Try adding your site to popular search engines. There is an aol directory, yahoo directory and much more. All you need is time. For more information sign up with FreeWebs or GeoCities.
