Artist and
craftsperson, Mary
has developed her own
techniques for layering colour
to create the luminous
and shimmering silk
paintings
she is known for. She used this medium
to illustrate the power and beauty of the
inuksuk in its Arctic setting for her 1999 book The Inuksuk Book. The
image of a
traditional Inuit stone structure silhouetted against an Arctic sky
has become a familiar
symbol. Yet their purpose remains a mystery. In a stunning new book,
artist and children's
author Mary Wallace, in consultation with Inuit
elders and other noted experts, gives a fascinating
introduction to the many forms of the inuksuk and
in its unique place in the Inuit life and culture.
Using words,
pictures, and paintings,
Mary brings this
unique stone structure
to life. Young
readers will find
out more about
inuksuks and how
to make them in
her forthcoming
book, The Inuksuk
Kit (Owl Books, 2001).
