You can tell what version of Netscape Navigator you are using by clicking on HELP in your List Bar, then selecting ABOUT COMMUNICATOR.... If you are not using Version 4.7, then you should consider upgrading. Version 4.7 is available FREE from Netscape by CLICKING HERE.
If you are running an older version of Explorer, there are some features explained in this tutorial that you will not be able to utilise.
Included in your Location Bar is a BOOKMARKS button.
Bookmarks is the term used to refer to the web pages you wish to visit regularly, and these are able to be located quickly by accessing them from your Bookmarks file.
The quickest way to bookmark a page is to use a keyboard shortcut. Holding down your Ctrl key, press D and the page will be automatically saved within your bookmark file.
When you arrive at a web site that you wish to return to again later, or on a regular basis, you should bookmark that page.
To bookmark the Cyberguide Internet Tuition site, CLICK HERE to go to the index page, then press Ctrl D to create the bookmark in Netscape Navigator, then hit your BACK BROWSER to return to this page.
The other way to bookmark a page is to click on the BOOKMARKS button, and then select ADD BOOKMARK. Or, you can right-click with your mouse to bring up a menu. In that menu, select ADD BOOKMARK.
When you add a page to your Bookmarks File (v4.7), you can choose which bookmark directory you wish to place the page reference in (this does not occur with keyboard shortcut bookmarking). By selecting FILE BOOKMARK, you can specify the most appropriate bookmark directory - for example, a page on your favorite Rock Band would obviously go into the MUSIC directory. If no appropriate directory exists on the topic, then create one by selecting NEW FOLDER. You can also give the page a name that best describes it - many web pages are unnamed, or simply marked "index".
Click on BOOKMARKS in the Location Bar.
Bookmark maintenance is essential if you want to find a specific page among hundreds. Clicking once again on FAVORITES in the Menu Bar will allow you to select EDIT BOOKMARKS, from where you can sort your favorites into their respective directories.
CLICK HERE to go to the next page.
The recommended way to do this is to find the home page, or index page, of the site you are intending to bookmark.
In the panel that comes up you will notice that there are directories relating to different topics.
By running your cursor over the bookmarks list you will be able to open these folders into subdirectories or individual page references.
Clicking on one of these references will take you to the chosen page. For instance, you may wish to visit a horoscopes page on a daily basis - selecting the page's bookmark will take you back there every time.
You can return from there to the previously selected page by using your BACK button.
Click on VIEW, then select SHOW, and make sure that "Location Bar" has a tick beside it.
If not, click on LOCATION BAR and a tick should appear. So too will your Location Bar. If you are using an older version of Netscape (v3.0) you will need to select OPTIONS, then select SHOW LOCATION.
