Useful Info: Cars/Driving: Winter Driving
General Information
Winter in Aomori often creates dangerous driving conditions. To ensure your safety, remember the following: -clear all snow and ice from your car (including the roof) before driving -leave extra time to allow for hazardous weather and driving conditions -DRIVE SLOWLY!! -leave 5-6 seconds of space between you and the car in front of you -keep a survival kit in your trunk that includes things like a shovel, sand for traction, tow rope, flares, flashlight, first aid kit, emergency blankets, food/water, matches, etc
Accelerating and Braking
Improper use of the gas pedal and brakes is the leading cause of skidding on winter roads. Always remember to use the gas pedal and brakes gently. Pressing either one suddenly will cause your tires to lose traction and make your car skid. If Your Tires Lock Up While Braking: -Cars with ABS: do not pump the brakes. Instead, mash the brake pedal down and steer in the direction you want to go. -Cars without ABS: gently depress the brake pedal repeatedly to prevent the tires from locking up.
Climbing or Descending Hills
When going uphill, use a lower gear and apply constant, gentle pressure to the gas pedal. Trying to get up the hill faster by mashing the gas pedal will only cause your tires to lose traction. When going downhill, be sure to reduce your speed before reaching the slope. Use the car's engine to assist you with braking by shifting into a lower gear. Pressing on the brakes too hard will cause you to skid.
If You Skid while Turning
If your car enters a skid while turning, immediately cease braking or accelerating by shifting into neutral or by depressing the clutch. Look where you want the car to go, and turn the steering wheel in that direction. Be careful not to overcorrect, as this will only cause the skid to worsen.
